SUMMARY:September First Fridays Artswalk
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy brand new indoor art shows\, murals\, and Artscape’s Pittsfield Paintboxes during the First Fridays Artswalk on Friday\, September 3\, 5 to 8 pm\, and all month long. You can view all locations by clicking here\, and new this year\, you can download the PocketSights app to follow a virtual walking tour on your cell phone. \n  \nThe Lichtenstein Center for the Arts\, 28 Renne Avenue\, will present THE CHASE / GRAUBARD SHOW\, September 3-25\, featuring works by married couple\, Karen Chase and Paul Graubard. \n  \nKaren Chase paints abstract paintings. Paul Graubard paints narrative\, visionary works. Their work could not be more different. This show highlights a few of their collaborations\, as well as their individual paintings. When they make collaborations\, each is free to obliterate or change what the other has done. Chase\, primarily a writer and poet\, has been painting since she was a little girl. Painting is a basic activity for her\, like cooking or washing. Graubard began to paint when he was in his sixties\, giving up his practice as a psychologist.  A number of museums collect his work. \n  \nOne of their collaborations\, Hongera Obama\, Tanzanian Congratulations\, will be silently auctioned off. The proceeds will be donated to the restoration of the Clinton AME Zion Church in Great Barrington. The silent auction is available in person at the Lichtenstein or you may contact slemme@cityofpittsfield.org for information on how to bid on the item. \n  \nThere will be an opening reception on Friday\, September 3\, 5 to 7 pm\, during First Fridays Artswalk (gallery will stay open until 8 pm). Gallery hours are Wednesday-Friday\, 11 am to 3 pm or by appointment. On Friday\, September 24 at 5:30 pm\, the public is invited to attend Collaboration: A Conversation with Karen and Paul moderated by Jayne Benjulian. This event is a part of the county-wide ArtWeek Berkshires. \n  \nNUarts\, 311 North Street\, will host an Open Studios event on Friday\, September 3\, 5 to 8 pm\, during First Fridays Artswalk. Among the artists opening for the evening are Myk Daigle\, Caroline Kelley\, Shany Porras\, Ilene Richard\, and Sally Tiska Rice. New works will be on view by over a dozen artists in NUarts’ gallery space. \n  \nMyk Daigle will be showing and selling antique and restored fountain pens. Caroline Kelley will show new abstracts as well as her “transportation paintings” – works with small antique collage illustrations of people in transit. Shany Porras will show abstract paintings that visually translate what one experiences through music influenced by Bauhaus and the American abstract painters of the 20th century. Ilene Richard will show her original acrylic paintings including “Year of the Clown”. Sally Tiska Rice will show her most recent home portraits\, and Marney Schorr will show her new series of abstract jazz paintings done with gouache on black and white paper. \n  \nHotel on North\, 297 North Street\, will feature then + now by Ellie Spangler for the September Artswalk. There will be a reception with the artist on Friday\, September 3\, 5 to 8 pm\, as part of First Fridays Artswalk. \n  \nThe Brothership Building Window at 141 North Street\, curated by IS183 Art School of the Berkshires\, will feature “More Than A Daydream” by Stacey Silkey\, September 3-25. \n  \nStacey Silkey is an abstract painter from the Berkshires who focuses on promoting empathy. Her paintings are based on hurried sketches of moving images or photographs that her consciousness has not fully processed. Recognizing the neurological aspect of storing memories and the influence images have on experience\, Stacey focuses on creating opportunities for shared meaning. Transforming incomplete memories\, her paintings bring new connections to the surface. \n  \nThe Unitarian Universalist Church of Pittsfield\, 175 Wendell Avenue\, will present Number One Job\, a show by Erica Manville and Melissa Quirk for the month of September. There will be an opening reception with live performance poetry on Friday\, September 3\, 5 to 8 pm\, as part of First Fridays Artswalk. \n  \nBecoming a mother is a magical transition that transforms one in body\, mind\, and soul. In Number One Job\, artists Erica Manville (visual artist) and Melissa Quirk (poet) explore early days of motherhood through dimensions of poetry and visual art. \n  \nThe Unitarian Universalist Church will host a second artist reception for Number One Job with live performance poetry on Friday\, September 17 at 7 pm as part of ArtWeek Berkshires. \n  \nArtists in the Guild of Berkshire Artists will show their work in a show entitled Plein Air in the Berkshires during the month of September at TKG Real Estate\, 137 North Street. There will be a reception as part of First Friday Artswalk on Friday\, September 3\, 5 to 8 pm. The work will be up during the month of September and can be viewed when TKG is open. Music on North. \n  \nSinger/songwriter Jaane Doe will perform at Sotille Park\, 200 North Street. Freestyle acoustic rocker\, Garrin Benfield\, will be at Persip Park\, 175 North Street; and musical trio\, The Midnight Anthem\, will perform at the Marketplace Cafe’s parklet at 53 North Street. \n  \nFrom 7:30 to 9 pm\, the Colonial Theatre\, 111 South Street\, will host the “On The Wall Video Art Show”. All are welcome to experience this free\, unique outdoor show of video art created by 9 local artists projected on the south wall of the Colonial Theatre. This large-scale projection show of short videos was produced by local artist and sculptor Joe Wheaton. The show is family friendly\, and you are encouraged to bring a lawn chair and settle in. The “On The Wall Video Art Show” is a collaboration of between the Downtown Pittsfield Cultural Association\, Berkshire Lightscapes\, and the Berkshire Art Association (BAA). \n  \nThe Berkshire Art Association will present DISTILLATIONS\, An Art Show\, at The Lichtenstein Center for the Arts\, 28 Renne Avenue\, from October 1 through November 28. \n  \nDISTILLATIONS features work by artists Peg Dotchin\, Jesse Tobin McCauley\, and Ilene Spiewak – artists who have met the chaos\, confusion and concerns of this moment in their artistic processes with a great passion for art and design. Enjoy live music from the Berkshire Hills Chorus beginning at 5:30 pm downtown! \n  \nNUarts Studios & Gallery\, the largest artist and artisan studio collective in downtown Pittsfield\, will host a holiday open studios event on December 3\, 5 to 8 pm. Among the artists opening their studios on December 3rd are Stefanie Bessman\, Myk Daigle\, Val Fox\, Kathy Gideon\, Caroline Kelley\, Shany Porras\, Ilene Richard\, Marney Schorr\, and Sally Tiska Rice. \n  \nThose participating in the open studios will offer artwork and wares for sale that would be perfect for holiday gifting. Join Marney Schorr for free\, handmade ornament making for all ages. Entrances to NUarts are at 311 North Street and 21 Union Street. \n  \nNew to Artswalk\, Soma’s Aromas\, 81 East Street\, will present “Mandalas in Bloom” by Elizabeth Nelson for the month of December. There will be a reception with the artist on December 3\, 5 to 8 pm. Hot Plate Brewing will pour samples\, and Elizabeth will create a mandala in real time to show her process. \n  \nThe Unitarian Universalist Church of Pittsfield\, 175 Wendell Avenue\, will present a group show entitled “When Heaven & Nature Sing”\, December 3 through January 17. Featuring photography\, paintings\, pastels\, and mixed-media art\, this group show includes pieces by Paula Dambrauskas\, Phyllis Prysby\, and Sal deBethune. There will be an opportunity to visit with the artists on Friday\, December 3\, 5 to 8 pm\, as part of First Fridays Artswalk. At the craft table in the Social Hall\, visitors will be invited to create\, collage\, and exchange winter holiday cards to take home. \n  \nMembers of the Guild of Berkshire Artists will celebrate the holiday season during the month of December at TKG Real Estate\, 137 North Street. Work exhibited will include paintings\, photographs\, and fiber arts. This exhibit is coordinated with an online show at BerkshireArtists.org which benefits Berkshire United Way. \nFeatured artists are Susan Sabino\, photographer; Katherine Ludington\, fiber artist; Lou Coco\, painter; and Jon Caplan\, photographer. There will be a reception as part of First Fridays Artswalk on Friday\, December 3\, 5 to 8 pm. The work will be up during the month of December and can be viewed when TKG is open. \n  \nThe Brothership Building Window at 141 North Street\, curated by IS183 Art School of the Berkshires\, will feature Proof that I am\, by lowercase d studios\, December 3-31. Sam de Soto (lowercase d studios\, they/he) is an artist\, musician\, and teacher from Long Island\, NY. Largely influenced by abstract expressionism\, street art\, and modern design\, Sam’s work ranges from large canvases to digital photo manipulations. This is their first gallery installation. \n  \nMCLA Pittsfield at 66 Allen Street will feature an art show by Molly Paluilis for the month of December. About her work\, Paluilis says\, “(it) is about feeling using color\, shape\, rhythm\, and movement. It shows healing\, chaos\, excitement\, pain\, and resilience in ways that words cannot. It is used as an outlet to express the inexpressible.” \n  \nThere will be an opening reception in conjunction with First Fridays Artswalk from 5 to 6:30 pm on December 3. After the opening\, Paluilis’s work can be viewed by appointment Monday through Friday\, 9 am to 4 pm. To make an appointment\, please call 413-662-5576 or 413-662-5422. \n  \nThe Lichtenstein Center for the Arts\, 28 Renne Avenue\, will host a grab and go Wreath Sale to benefit the food pantry at the South Congregational Church\, UCC\, Pittsfield on Friday\, December 3 from 12:30 to 6:30 pm. Choose from holiday wreaths\, kissing balls\, and centerpieces all handmade by local artists. \n  \nHotel on North\, 297 North Street\, will feature WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE by Scott Taylor for the December Artswalk. WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE is a sampling of the work Taylor created during the pandemic. Many of the paintings speak of containment\, some visually looking outward\, some inward. Some return to a simpler time that we once knew hoping to find comfort in our own existence. There will be an opportunity to visit with the artist on Friday\, December 3\, 5 to 8 pm\, as part of First Fridays Artswalk. \n  \nThe Berkshire Museum\, 39 South Street\, will present Museum of the Moon\, an awe-inspiring installation of lunar views and glowing moonlight through January 9\, 2022. A combination of art\, science\, and sound\, this radiant installation was created using NASA imagery of the lunar surface\, inspiring those who experience it to contemplate the many ways the Moon connects humankind across time and culture. There will be extended museum hours every Friday evening until 7:30 pm. Admission is required. Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for children aged 4-17. Children 3 and under and museum members are free. \n  \nThe December Artswalk will also highlight art celebrating Cultural Appreciation Week 2021 in the windows of Berkshire Juvenile Court\, 190 North Street. The virtual tour will guide you to murals downtown including: The Sun Will Rise by Jesse Tobin McCauley\, Jay Tobin and Stephanie Quetti at 443 North Street and Gaia on Melville Street by Mike Carty. Also highlighted will be all of Artscape’s Pittsfield Paintboxes. \n  \nAll art exhibits are on display in participating venues throughout the month. The work is displayed on a concrete wall below Jubilee Hill\, on College Way in the West Side of Pittsfield. The mural is inspired by Peterson’s reimagining of Rockwell’s 1964 painting\, “The Problem We All Live With.\n\n\n\nAfter the unveiling\, the community will share and hear stories about Westside History at the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts.\n\n\n\nThe Black Legacy Project Premiere Film ScreeningFriday\, June 17\, 7:30 pm at The Colonial Theatre\, FREEThe Black Legacy Project is a musical celebration of Black history to advance racial solidarity\, equity\, and belonging. The Black LP is a national project produced by Berkshires nonprofit\, Music in Common\, in partnership with community stakeholders at the local level. As it travels the country\, the Black LP brings together Black and White artists and artists of ALL backgrounds to record present day interpretations of songs central to the Black American experience and compose originals relevant to the pressing calls for change of our time. Originating in Galveston\, Texas\, it has been celebrated annually on June 19th in various parts of the United States since 1865.The June 19th event is the new reimaging of the annual Gather In festival. It will be a celebration of freedom and a day filled with music\, dance\, spoken word\, activities for the kids\, basketball clinics\, food\, and vendors. There will be family-friendly activities including a bouncy house\, a video game van\, potato sack races\, and art projects (sculpture and mural making) with Berkshire Art Center (formally IS-183)\, Railroad Street Youth Project\, Manos Unidos\, and TG’s Clubhouse. The first 200 kids to the festival will receive free ice cream\, and until they run out\, free lunch for all children under 13. There will be entertainment including MC Manfred Slaughter\, the reading of the proclamation by Sadiya Quetti\, and performances including a spoken word from Dre Finley\, African drumming with Jerome Edgerton\, and musical performances with singers Wanda L. Houston\, Chantell McFarland\, Samirah Evans\, pianist Kaz Smith\, and all the way from New York City\, Acute Inflections\, the sultry musical duo of a former Broadway singer and her 007 on bass. This event is free and open to all.
