DESCRIPTION:Downtown Pittsfield\, Inc. has partnered with Katunemo: Art & Healing to bring “The Journey III”\, an exhibition featuring the work of fifteen artists from different countries in Latin America and Europe\, to their conference room at 33 Dunham Mall for one-night only\, Friday\, October 6\, from 5 to 8 pm\, during the First Fridays Artswalk in downtown Pittsfield. \n“The Journey” Art Exhibition is a way to celebrate the life\, emotional process\, and artistic journeys of different local and immigrant artists. The exhibition is a Hispanic Heritage Month celebration full of photography\, visual art\, and live music by artists of all ages who come from different countries in Latin America and Europe. \nThe featured artists are Sheila Franco\, David Melchor\, Derly Toloza\, Diana Rodriguez\, Juanita Latorre Silva\, Nicole Herasme\, Shelsy Rodriguez\, Thayna Dias\, Estiven Sosa\, Micaela Soasti\, Valentina Morales\, Marina Dominguez\, Angie Soasti\, Clara Guatta\, and Claire Saussol. \nThe artists will share about their culture\, language\, traditions\, roots and different perspectives about life. These artists wish to honor their heritage\, where they come from\, and what they offer to the Berkshire community. \nKatunemo: Art & Healing is a group of immigrant artists who want to share their art and experiences. They create spaces where artists empower and support one another to take their art to the next level. They also seek to transmute energy to encourage and motivate healing through different artistic tools\, not only for the artist but also for the rest of the community. Katunemo is the union of two words: Katupyry and Ñemohasäi. These are two words of Guarani origin\, a native language of South America. Katupyry means bold\, intelligent and refers to art. Ñemohasäi means to heal. This free live painting demonstration will be from 5 to 7 pm during the October 6 First Fridays Artswalk\, rain or shine. \nNicole Herasme was born in a small town in Santiago de los caballeros Dominican Republic\, and moved to the United States when she was 19 looking for better opportunities. She has recently found a great passion for photography and modeling\, dedicated to learning and improving in these branches. She enjoys expressing her emotions through art such as painting\, singing\, dancing and poetry. Ed provides the hard driving\, deeply blues-infused\, powerful lead vocals\, while Dan and Benny lay down a solid foundation ranging from hard swinging to straight solid grooves. \n  \n“Dance and Drum with Aimee\, Kim and Dan” features Aimee Gelinas and Dan Cohen on drums and dancer Kim Waterman. For 25 years\, Aimee\, Kim and Dan have been sharing traditional West African and Caribbean song\, drum\, and dance in the Berkshires and beyond. They have all studied with master teachers from West Africa\, Haiti\, Cuba\, Puerto Rico\, and Brazil\, and it is with these teachers’ blessings and an abundance of spirit and respect that they bring these traditions to you. \n  \nSample The Cat is a 4-piece soulful rock group storming the region’s rock scene. The band fuses elements of rock\, soul\, blues\, and funk into an energetic yet smooth original sound that grooves with a serious head bop factor. Years in the making\, the group includes singer Kendrah Bellevue with her soulfully enriching vocals\, Steve Dalton with his masterful melodic arrangements on guitar\, Bryan “Dizzy Fingers” Brophy with his colorful layers on keys\, and Olivia Davis with her punchy groove on drums. \n  \nLet It Shine! There will be an opportunity to meet with Pops and Jasmine during this event. \n  \nPaintings by Karen Chase and Paul Graubard will also be on view at the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts\, 28 Renne Avenue\, from 12 to 4 pm. Witch Slapped\, 78 North Street\, will be open with an afternoon of spooky\, free family fun. There will be a Spooky Storytime at noon with Poppy DaBubbly and spooky ornament making from 12 to 4 pm. \n  \n  \nThe Let It Shine! Public Art Partnership is a group of Pittsfield-based community members who have formed to organize public art and revitalization on North Street\, empowered by organizing efforts through MassDevelopment’s TDI. MassDevelopment’s Transformative Development Initiative (TDI) is a program for Gateway Cities designed to accelerate economic growth within focused districts. \n  \nThe Let It Shine! Public Art Project is sponsored by MassDevelopment’s TDI Creative Catalyst Grant program\, Teton Management\, Mill Town Foundation\, and Carr Hardware. It is presented in partnership with MassDevelopment’s TDI\, Downtown Pittsfield\, Inc.\, Downtown Pittsfield Cultural Association\, Artscape\, City of Pittsfield’s Office of Cultural Development\, Huck Elling\, Jesse Tobin McCauley\, Common Wealth Murals\, Westside Legends\, Allegrone Companies\, The Cooper Center\, and Paul Aronofsky. \n  \nMassDevelopment’s TDI Creative Catalyst Grant program is made possible by the Barr Foundation\, which since 2019 has awarded $4.4 million to MassDevelopment to create and administer arts-based programming that directly supports the expansion of cultural and creative industries in Gateway Cities. Gateway Cities have historically been home to many vibrant cultural and creative assets\, and MassDevelopment’s TDI Creative Catalyst Grant program seeks to amplify the vibrancy of these communities by providing grant funding for locally initiated arts and culture-based projects. \n  \nMassDevelopment’s Transformative Development Initiative (TDI) works with cross-sector partnerships in targeted commercial districts in Gateway Cities in order to engage community members\, implement local economic development initiatives\, and spur further public and private investment. Since 2015\, MassDevelopment has invested $20 million in TDI districts through tools such as technical assistance\, real estate investments\, grant programs\, and fellows who work in the districts. That investment has directly influenced over $100.2 million in public and private investments in the districts and assisted an additional $219.9 million.

SUMMARY:St. Joseph’s Polish Picnic
DESCRIPTION:After a hiatus of three years due to the pandemic\, the Polish Picnic is returning to the grounds of St. Joseph’s Church at 414 North Street on Sunday\, July 16 from 12 to 5 pm. This 60-plus year tradition is one of the last ethnic festivals in Berkshire County. \nA highlight of the Polish Picnic is the homemade Polish food for sale made by the parishioners of St. Joseph’s Church\, including pierogies\, kapusta\, golumbki\, and kielbasa. The Eddie Forman Orchestra will entertain the crowd beginning at 1 pm. Bring a lawn chair to relax and enjoy the music or get up and dance to the polka. There will be raffles\, games of chance\, and a KiddyLand. There will also be American food and adult beverages for sale. \nThere is a one-dollar entry fee to the Picnic which includes chances to win door prizes. The Polish Picnic is open to the public and all ages are welcome.

Showtimes: 5:40\, 6:40\, and 7:40 pm. Opal is an award-winning performer with over a decade of experience based out of Western Massachusetts. She’s known across New England and the Tri-State area for her “Danger Dame of the Flame” variety show. Also known as the Sword Queen of Gypsy Layne\, Opal showcases masterful sword spinning\, daring prop tricks\, and some say she can even speak to snakes. The Black LP is a national project produced by Berkshires nonprofit\, Music in Common\, in partnership with community stakeholders at the local level. As it travels the country\, the Black LP brings together Black and White artists and artists of ALL backgrounds to record present day interpretations of songs central to the Black American experience and compose originals relevant to the pressing calls for change of our time. Community roundtable discussions help inform how these songs are interpreted and written.The Black Legacy Project launched in September 2021 in the Berkshires and will travel to Atlanta\, Los Angeles\, the Mississippi Delta\, Denver\, the Arkansas Ozarks\, and Boise in 2022-2023. The event will conclude with a community conversation about the Project.Click here to reserve your FREE tickets! \n\nJuneteenth Collaborative Committee to Host Juneteenth Celebration Celebrating Black Independence DaySunday\, June 19\, 12 to 7 pmThe Juneteenth Collaborative Committee (consisting of NAACP Berkshire County Branch\, Women of Color Giving Circle\, Rites of Passage and Empowerment (ROPE)\, Westside Legends\, Multicultural Bridge\, Berkshire Black Economic Council\, Saint John’s Lodge #10\, Clinton Church Restoration\, and Lift Every Voice!) will host its first annual Juneteenth Celebration on June 19th!Juneteenth\, also known as Black Independence Day\, is now a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans. It is also often observed for celebrating African-American culture. Originating in Galveston\, Texas\, it has been celebrated annually on June 19th in various parts of the United States since 1865.The June 19th event is the new reimaging of the annual Gather In festival. It will be a celebration of freedom and a day filled with music\, dance\, spoken word\, activities for the kids\, basketball clinics\, food\, and vendors. There will be family-friendly activities including a bouncy house\, a video game van\, potato sack races\, and art projects (sculpture and mural making) with Berkshire Art Center (formally IS-183)\, Railroad Street Youth Project\, Manos Unidos\, and TG’s Clubhouse. The first 200 kids to the festival will receive free ice cream\, and until they run out\, free lunch for all children under 13. There will be entertainment including MC Manfred Slaughter\, the reading of the proclamation by Sadiya Quetti\, and performances including a spoken word from Dre Finley\, African drumming with Jerome Edgerton\, and musical performances with singers Wanda L. Houston\, Chantell McFarland\, Samirah Evans\, pianist Kaz Smith\, and all the way from New York City\, Acute Inflections\, the sultry musical duo of a former Broadway singer and her 007 on bass. This event is free and open to all.
