DESCRIPTION:The June 7 First Fridays at Five will feature a performance by KR3T’s Dance Company from 5 to 6 pm at the City Stage. This will be an all-ages street dance performance by New York City’s KR3T’s Dance Company\, and at the end of the hour\, they will be joined by the Wandering Dance Society who will lead a dance circle for all who wish to participate. \nKR3Ts Dance Company strives to broaden the notion of what a dancer is\, and to promote the preservation of ethnic and cultural dances based in Spanish Harlem. The dance company provides a positive alternative to social and street pressures among children and young adults in lower and middle-income families in Latino communities of New York City\, mainly by providing dance classes and support programs in a non-discriminating atmosphere.

For 25 years\, Aimee\, Kim and Dan have been sharing traditional West African and Caribbean song\, drum\, and dance in the Berkshires and beyond. They have all studied with master teachers from West Africa\, Haiti\, Cuba\, Puerto Rico\, and Brazil\, and it is with these teachers’ blessings and an abundance of spirit and respect that they bring these traditions to you. \n  \nSample The Cat is a 4-piece soulful rock group storming the region’s rock scene. The band fuses elements of rock\, soul\, blues\, and funk into an energetic yet smooth original sound that grooves with a serious head bop factor. Witch Slapped\, 78 North Street\, will be open with an afternoon of spooky\, free family fun. There will be a Spooky Storytime at noon with Poppy DaBubbly and spooky ornament making from 12 to 4 pm. \n  \n  \nThe Let It Shine! Public Art Partnership is a group of Pittsfield-based community members who have formed to organize public art and revitalization on North Street\, empowered by organizing efforts through MassDevelopment’s TDI. MassDevelopment’s Transformative Development Initiative (TDI) is a program for Gateway Cities designed to accelerate economic growth within focused districts. \n  \nThe Let It Shine! Public Art Project is sponsored by MassDevelopment’s TDI Creative Catalyst Grant program\, Teton Management\, Mill Town Foundation\, and Carr Hardware. It is presented in partnership with MassDevelopment’s TDI\, Downtown Pittsfield\, Inc.\, Downtown Pittsfield Cultural Association\, Artscape\, City of Pittsfield’s Office of Cultural Development\, Huck Elling\, Jesse Tobin McCauley\, Common Wealth Murals\, Westside Legends\, Allegrone Companies\, The Cooper Center\, and Paul Aronofsky. \n  \nMassDevelopment’s TDI Creative Catalyst Grant program is made possible by the Barr Foundation\, which since 2019 has awarded $4.4 million to MassDevelopment to create and administer arts-based programming that directly supports the expansion of cultural and creative industries in Gateway Cities. The mission of R.O.P.E. is to celebrate and honor their entry into adulthood and provide them with skills and knowledge that they need to be successful\, independent\, and responsible young adults. R.O.P.E. is designed to help participants discover their inner voice and support all components of personal development. Her couture pieces are constructed from post-consumer waste such as food packaging\, wine corks\, cardboard\, books\, wire\, plastic\, and other discarded items and thrifted wares. She manipulates the color\, shape\, and texture of her materials in a way that compels us to question our assumptions of beauty and worth\, and ultimately reconsider our habits and attitudes about waste and consumerism. \n  \nThe Lichtenstein Center for the Arts\, 28 Renee Avenue\, will present CATA’s I Am a Part of Art through August 23\, 2023. Community Access to the Arts’ Annual Art Show I Am a Part of Art features more than 150 paintings and drawings by artists with disabilities – the culmination of hundreds of CATA visual arts workshops serving teens\, adults\, and elders with disabilities. \n  \nThe Guild of Berkshire Artists is partnering with Hot Plate Brewing Co. to showcase small to medium-sized works from member artists during the 2023 First Fridays Artswalks. In July\, Hot Plate Brewing Co.\, 1 School Street\, will present works by artist Emily Bunnell. Emily paints elements and scenes found in nature with a designer’s eye. Her mediums are acrylic\, gouache\, pencil\, and digital. There will be an opening reception with Emily during the First Friday Artswalk on July 7 from 5 to 8 pm. Emily’s work will remain on display through the end of July. Musician Dave Brown will perform a solo set from 7 to 10 pm on Friday\, July 7 in celebration of this new collaboration. \n  \nThe Beacon Cinema Lobby\, at 57 North Street\, will feature Strike a Memory: Imagery & Illustration in Berkshire Matchbooks\, an art exhibit of vintage Berkshire matchbooks dating from the 1950s-1980s from July 1 through July 31. The exhibit is curated by local artist Sara Paul of Shire Prints and features vintage matchbooks with famous landmarks in Lenox\, Pittsfield\, Great Barrington\, and other Berkshire towns. The matchbooks have been scanned at a high resolution and printed many times greater than their size so that viewers can get an up-close look at matchbook art in its full color\, detail\, and splendor. Visitors may stop by and meet Sara during the First Friday Artswalk on July 7 from 5 to 8 pm. \n  \nReDefine Community Center\, 5 Melville Street\, will feature 4 local artists for one night only during the July 7 First Fridays Artswalk. Artists are Matt Brinton\, Nicole Fecteau\, Cody Mitchell\, and Hannah Mitchell. Stop by from 5 to 8 pm on July 7 to view their art and chat with them about their artistic process. Mambo Royalty is led by Eddie Torres Jr.\, son of legendary Latin dancer Eddie Torres and flamenco dancer Nélida Tirado\, whose career highlights include performances at Madison Square Garden\, Harvard University\, and featured appearances with the Recording Academy/Grammys\, MTV\, Access Hollywood\, and Lincoln Center; and Princess Serrano\, who spent countless hours training and studying in various Latin companies including Fuego Dance Company\, Art in Motion\, and Iroko\, and whose recent projects include the Warner Brothers movie In The Heights as a dancer and Latin choreographer. \n  \nBerkshire artists will also perform\, to be announced at a later date.

DESCRIPTION:Downtown Pittsfield\, Inc. will present Indoors Out! Dance on North on Saturday\, September 25\, 5 to 7 pm\, at Persip Park\, 175 North Street. \nIndoors Out! Dance on North features work by RawDance\, Fiona Scruggs\, Fern Katz\, Danielle Galietti\, and Molly Hess. \nRAWDance co-artistic directors Wendy Rein and Ryan Smith will perform A Dance on North\, a duet that explores the dynamics of sharing personal space in public. RAWDance is based out of Hudson\, NY and San Francisco\, CA. \nDancers of The Berkshires\, a local dance collective made up of emerging choreographers and dancers\, will be performing two works. The first\, Qualia\, is choreographed by Fiona Scruggs and performed by Veronica Bone and Gillian Ebersole. Qualia is inspired by one’s individual experience of consciousness. \nThe second\, Remnants\, is choreographed by Anna Gishan and performed by Fran Katz\, and explores the questions: What remains? How do we remember? \nMolly Hess\, a Berkshires based choreographer and dancer\, creates playful and tender work meant to be enjoyed by audiences of all ages. For this event\, she will be joined by Mary Teusche in a work entitled “Out-of-House” Plants. \nDanielle Galienti\, a North Adams based dancer and choreographer\, will present Material Imagination: the birth of a black hole. In this piece\, Danielle uses a mylar box dress to explore expansion and collapse. \nPerformances will loop over the course of the two-hour event\, with each performer dancing twice\, so there is plenty of time to catch the action. \nIndoors Out! Dance on North is presented by Downtown Pittsfield\, Inc. and funding has been provided by the Commonwealth Places Program created by MassDevelopment.
