DESCRIPTION:Great\, great\, great granddaughter of Herman Melville and playwright Elizabeth Doss will lead writers in a week-long intensive playwriting workshop that will culminate in a public reading of scenes at the end of the process. Doss will employ a variety of techniques to encourage participants to maximize the theatrical possibilities of each word they type. The workshop will incorporate devising\, site-specific\, and play-based strategies in addition to story craft\, and playwriting nuts and bolts. DESCRIPTION:On June 13\, 1825\, the Marquis de Lafayette visited Pittsfield as the “Nation’s Guest.” The only living general of the Revolutionary War\, he arrived to great fanfare\, music\, and speeches\, and thanked Americans for their generous hospitality. \nJoin us on Park Square as we commemorate the bicentennial of his visit with a lively program of history and revelry. Events will include a reprise of Lafayette’s arrival by horse-drawn carriage and welcome to the city – complete with local dignitaries and officials\, music\, and a speech by a Lafayette historic re-enactor. Participants include Berkshire Concert Choir and Berkshire Fife and Drum Corps. SUMMARY:Oral History Event at the Berkshire Athenaeum
DESCRIPTION:The Berkshire Athenaeum in partnership with the Berkshire County Historical Society (BCHS) will present a free Oral History Event on Saturday\, December 7 from 10 am to 2 pm. \nIn celebration of the 100th anniversary of the publication of Herman Melville’s Billy Budd\, the Berkshire Athenaeum and BCHS will collect and record stories of grandparents and grandchildren. Billy Budd was discovered and published by Herman Melville’s granddaughter\, Eleanor\, who shared a special relationship with her grandfather. Together with partners from the Housatonic Heritage Oral History Center at Berkshire Community College\, the Athenaeum and BCHS will create a story scavenger hunt for children and their families\, which will include tasty treats and art projects. All participants will receive a copy of their recorded stories. \nPre-registration is not required. This program is funded in part by Mass Humanities\, which receives support from the Massachusetts Cultural Council and is an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

As it travels the country\, the Black LP brings together Black and White artists and artists of ALL backgrounds to record present day interpretations of songs central to the Black American experience and compose originals relevant to the pressing calls for change of our time. Community roundtable discussions help inform how these songs are interpreted and written. \nThe Black Legacy Project launched in September 2021 in the Berkshires and will travel to Atlanta\, Los Angeles\, the Mississippi Delta\, Denver\, the Arkansas Ozarks\, and Boise in 2022-2023. A docuseries of the project is being produced in partnership with Berkshire-based OUTPOST. The series kicks off with a premiere screening in the Berkshires in honor of Juneteenth that includes footage from the concert debut of the Project held at The Colonial Theatre in March 2022. Originating in Galveston\, Texas\, it has been celebrated annually on June 19th in various parts of the United States since 1865.The June 19th event is the new reimaging of the annual Gather In festival. It will be a celebration of freedom and a day filled with music\, dance\, spoken word\, activities for the kids\, basketball clinics\, food\, and vendors.
