The popular Free Kids’ Paint & Sip will return to St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in May and will move outdoors later in the season. Inspired by the likes of Stevie Nicks\, Kacey Musgraves\, and Brandi Carlile\, she will pull you right in with her honest\, relatable lyrics and her emotional\, powerful voice. \n  \nErin Laundry\, owner of Pittsfield’s Bottomless Bricks\, will be hosting a free\, drop-in LEGO® Community Quilt Art Project on May 5 from 5 to 8 pm at Framework\, Pittsfield Coworking\, 437 North Street. The community is invited to make art using LEGO® elements by visiting the Creation Station at Framework to decorate a LEGO® square to be added to a Community Quilt. This event is open to all ages\, and it is free to participate. \n  \nAt Sotille Park\, 200 North Street\, Jim Horsford will be hosting a free live pottery demonstration where he will be inviting individuals to help him make pots on the potter’s wheel. Jim spent 30 years as an art teacher at Herberg Middle School from 1978 to 2008. Currently\, he teaches pottery on the wheel at the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts where he has been since 2000. \n  \nDowntown Pittsfield\, Inc. and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church will host a Free Kids’ Paint & Sip sponsored by Downtown Pittsfield\, Inc.\, First Fridays Artswalk\, and the Mass Cultural Council on Friday\, May 5\, 5 to 7 pm\, in the auditorium at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church\, 67 East Street. \n  \nThis free Spring-themed Paint & Sip (perfect for making Mother’s Day gifts) is best suited for ages 5 to 12\, although younger and older children are welcome. All materials\, instruction\, snacks\, and juice will be provided. Children are welcome to drop in anytime over the course of the event\, and all children must be accompanied by an adult. A collaborative effort of EforAll\, 1Berkshire\, Pittsfield Economic Revitalization Corporation\, and Berkshire Regional Planning Commission\, this event will feature booths from more than 25 organizations that support small business\, panel discussions\, and plenty of opportunities for networking. \nBusiness owners and managers will be able to connect with organizations and programs that have resources to help them – whether with technical assistance\, funding or grant programs\, marketing\, or other advice or support. The program will be valuable for existing businesses\, would-be entrepreneurs\, and solo service providers and consultants. \nParticipants will be able to access experts through a series of panel discussions led by regional experts: \n● “Which organization can help me with what?” moderated by Ben Lamb of 1Berkshire \n● “How can I get funding for my business?” moderated by Raymond Lanza-Weil of Common Capital \n● “How can I find more customers\, what marketing works?” moderated by Noah Cook-Dubin of Kanoa Consulting \nThis free\, public event is made possible by a grant from PERC and additional support from the Berkshire Regional Planning Commission. While our traditional view of creative work might lead us to think of artists as solitary visionaries\, the creative process is profoundly influenced by social interactions even when artists work alone. Sociologist Hannah Wohl draws on more than one hundred interviews and two years of ethnographic research in the New York contemporary art market to develop a rich sociological perspective of creativity. From inside the studio\, we see how artists experiment with new ideas and decide which works to abandon\, destroy\, put into storage\, or exhibit. Wohl then transports readers into the art world\, where we discover how artists’ understandings of their work are shaped through interactions in studio visits\, galleries\, international art fairs\, and collectors’ homes.\n \n  \nBound by Creativity reveals how artists develop conceptions of their distinctive creative visions through experimentation and social interactions. Ultimately\, we come to appreciate how judgment is integral to the creative process\, both resulting in the creation of original works while also limiting an artist’s ability to break new ground. Exploring creativity through the lens of judgment sheds new light on the production of cultural objects\, markets\, and prestige.  \n  \nHannah Wohl is a native of the Berkshires and an assistant professor of sociology at the University of California\, Santa Barbara. She received her PhD in sociology at Northwestern University and was a postdoctoral fellow at Columbia University. Her research examines judgment and decision-making in creative industries\, such as art\, literature\, technology\, and academia. DESCRIPTION:The OLLI Distinguished Speakers Series presents\nWilliams College Professor Jana Sawicki on \nWhat is Happiness? \nTuesday\, February 22\, 7 pm \nOnline via Zoom  \nClick here to register safely and securely online or call 413.236.2190. \n  \nSince the time of Plato and Aristotle\, philosophers have discussed happiness: What is it? Is it primarily a pleasurable feeling? A psychological state of mind? A sense of well-being? In what sense can we describe a life as happy\, and what makes a life happy as such? What makes someone worthy of happiness? What can science tell us about happiness? Can happiness by measured? Is the value of happiness over-rated? What role does adversity play in a happy life? \nAlthough this lecture will not be able to engage all of these questions\, we will discuss some of the key debates in the philosophical literature with the aim of laying the groundwork for an interesting discussion and sharing our collective wisdom about the value of happiness. \nJana Sawicki is the Morris Professor of Rhetoric (in Philosophy) at Williams College\, and has been teaching at Williams for 30 years. Working closely with students\, she has had the opportunity to read and think together with them about questions of central concern: the challenges they face\, the experiences that they find meaningful\, their preoccupations and values\, their considerable capacity and potential role as future leaders. Many of their questions continue to be at the center of her own research and writing: Who are we today? How has the rise of the digital age and recent trends in globalization changed our ways of life and self-understandings in the contemporary US? What are some of the most significant problems facing us in the present\, and what can philosophy contribute to addressing them? How do we reconcile democratic liberalism with multiculturalism? How should we think about racial and political polarization and the threats posed to democracy? Professor Sawicki’s areas of expertise include published work on the widely influential French thinker Michel Foucault and receptions and uses of his work in feminist and queer theories\, as well as 19th and 20th century Continental philosophy\, particularly ethics and politics.  \nAdmission is $10 for OLLI at BCC and Berkshire Museum members\, and $15 for the general public. DuBois\, James Van Der Zee\, and Elizabeth Freeman\, the first enslaved African American woman to successfully file a lawsuit for freedom in the state of Massachusetts. Her 1780 case set a precedent that led to the abolition of slavery in Massachusetts a few years later. MCLA Professor Emerita Frances Jones-Sneed will tell Freeman’s story\, its implications\, and current efforts to share it widely\, from a planned motion picture to a commemorative statue in Sheffield\, joining one on view at the National Museum of African-American History and Culture in Washington DC. \nDr. Frances Jones-Sneed is professor emerita of history and former Director of Women Studies at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. Jones-Sneed has taught and researched local history\, with a focus on African-Americans\, for over twenty-five years. She spearheaded a national conference on African American biography in September 2006\, is co-director of the Upper Housatonic Valley African American Heritage Trail\, a former board member of Mass Humanities\, and is presently a board member of the Samuel Harrison Society and Clinton Church Restoration. She was a 2008 NEH Summer Fellow at the W. E. B. DESCRIPTION:The OLLI Distinguished Speakers Series presents\nWilliams College Professor Michelle Apotsos on \nArchitecture\, Environmentalism & Islam: The Djenne Mosque \nTuesday\, December 14\, 7 pm\nOnline via Zoom  \nAs one of the tallest freestanding earthen structures in the world\, the legendary Djenne Mosque\, located in Mali\, West Africa\, has long functioned as a symbol of cultural identity in the area of the Niger Bend\, as well as a touchstone of the primary regional religion\, Islam. \nYet the current climate crisis and resultant discussions about the importance of sustainable systems and green solutions – particularly with regards to architecture – compels a reconsideration of this mosque through a new lens: that of environmentalism and sustainability. Thus\, this talk explores how ancient architectures such as the Djenne mosque\, which has existed in one iteration or another for over 700 hundred years\, may have lessons to teach us about contemporary and even future-facing sustainable architectural solutions. \nIn rethinking the Djenne mosque through the lenses of both faith and environmentalism\, one sees how Islam and sustainable architecture exist within the mosque as a collaborative system\, providing potential lessons for humanity to consider as we plan for an increasingly uncertain future. \nMichelle Apotsos is an Associate Professor of Art History at Williams College\, where she teaches courses about Africa\, Islam\, and the built environment. She  is the author of Architecture\, Islam\, and Identity in West Africa: Lessons from Larabanga (Routledge\, 2016) and The Masjid in Contemporary Islamic Africa (Cambridge University Press\, 2021). Hot Plate Brewing will pour samples\, and Elizabeth will create a mandala in real time to show her process. \n  \nThe Unitarian Universalist Church of Pittsfield\, 175 Wendell Avenue\, will present a group show entitled “When Heaven & Nature Sing”\, December 3 through January 17. Featuring photography\, paintings\, pastels\, and mixed-media art\, this group show includes pieces by Paula Dambrauskas\, Phyllis Prysby\, and Sal deBethune. Choose from holiday wreaths\, kissing balls\, and centerpieces all handmade by local artists. \n  \nHotel on North\, 297 North Street\, will feature WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE by Scott Taylor for the December Artswalk. WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE is a sampling of the work Taylor created during the pandemic. Many of the paintings speak of containment\, some visually looking outward\, some inward. Some return to a simpler time that we once knew hoping to find comfort in our own existence. There will be an opportunity to visit with the artist on Friday\, December 3\, 5 to 8 pm\, as part of First Fridays Artswalk. \n  \nThe Berkshire Museum\, 39 South Street\, will present Museum of the Moon\, an awe-inspiring installation of lunar views and glowing moonlight through January 9\, 2022. A combination of art\, science\, and sound\, this radiant installation was created using NASA imagery of the lunar surface\, inspiring those who experience it to contemplate the many ways the Moon connects humankind across time and culture. There will be extended museum hours every Friday evening until 7:30 pm. Admission is required. Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for children aged 4-17. With more than 41 million Americans over the age of 65 in the United States\, the question becomes how much (or\, perhaps\, what type) of memory loss is to be expected as one gets older and what should trigger a visit to the doctor. Join Dr. Andrew Budson for this virtual Zoom talk where he will discuss his award-winning book\, Seven Steps to Managing Your Memory: What’s Normal\, What’s Not\, and What to Do About It\, which explains how individuals can distinguish changes in memory due to Alzheimer’s versus normal aging\, what medications\, diets\, and exercise regimes can help\, and the best habits\, strategies\, and memory aids to use\, in seven simple steps. He will also discuss his newest book\, Six Steps to Managing Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia: A Guide for Families\, including how families can manage issues with memory\, language\, vision\, behavior\, driving\, incontinence\, sleep\, and more. \nAndrew E. Budson\, MD\, majored in chemistry and philosophy at Haverford College before receiving his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. Dr. Budson is Professor of Neurology at Boston University\, Lecturer in Neurology at Harvard Medical School\, and Chief of Cognitive & Behavioral Neurology at the Veterans Affairs Boston Healthcare System. His career combines education\, research\, and clinical care to help those with memory disorders.

At the same time\, it must be understood that electrification is the biggest transition the automotive industry has ever had to face. There are major challenges along the entire value chain that need to be resolved in order to reach this goal. One important example is the complementary role of battery electric and fuel cell electric technologies. \nTo explain and clarify these issues\, we have two speakers from Toyota\, a company that has been addressing environmental issues for over 30 years. Dr. Stephan Herbst\, currently acting as the Technical Head Powertrain Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Business Unit of Toyota Motor Europe’s (TME) R&D and Fuel Cell Business Group\, is responsible for hydrogen strategy\, new products and sustainable mobility. He is on the Management Board of the Hydrogen Council and actively involved in Hydrogen Europe. Ash Corson is the Senior Manager for the Electrified Vehicle & Technologies Office (EVTO) of Toyota Motor North America. SUMMARY:The OLLI Distinguished Speakers Series presents Professor Sara Newland on "US-China Relations Under Biden and Trump"
DESCRIPTION:The US-China relationship is at its lowest point in decades. To what degree are these tensions the product of Trump-era policy changes toward China\, and how (if at all) have these policies changed under President Biden’s leadership? This talk will describe the political changes in China and the US that have produced the current tensions in the bilateral relationship\, and assess the prospects for cooperation between the two countries.  \n  \nSara Newland is an Assistant Professor of government at Smith College\, where her teaching and research focus on the domestic and international politics of mainland China and Taiwan.
