DuBois\, James Van Der Zee\, and Elizabeth Freeman\, the first enslaved African American woman to successfully file a lawsuit for freedom in the state of Massachusetts. Her 1780 case set a precedent that led to the abolition of slavery in Massachusetts a few years later. MCLA Professor Emerita Frances Jones-Sneed will tell Freeman’s story\, its implications\, and current efforts to share it widely\, from a planned motion picture to a commemorative statue in Sheffield\, joining one on view at the National Museum of African-American History and Culture in Washington DC. \nDr. Frances Jones-Sneed is professor emerita of history and former Director of Women Studies at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. Jones-Sneed has taught and researched local history\, with a focus on African-Americans\, for over twenty-five years. She spearheaded a national conference on African American biography in September 2006\, is co-director of the Upper Housatonic Valley African American Heritage Trail\, a former board member of Mass Humanities\, and is presently a board member of the Samuel Harrison Society and Clinton Church Restoration. She was a 2008 NEH Summer Fellow at the W. E. B. DESCRIPTION:The OLLI Distinguished Speakers Series presents\nWilliams College Professor Michelle Apotsos on \nArchitecture\, Environmentalism & Islam: The Djenne Mosque \nTuesday\, December 14\, 7 pm\nOnline via Zoom  \nAs one of the tallest freestanding earthen structures in the world\, the legendary Djenne Mosque\, located in Mali\, West Africa\, has long functioned as a symbol of cultural identity in the area of the Niger Bend\, as well as a touchstone of the primary regional religion\, Islam. \nYet the current climate crisis and resultant discussions about the importance of sustainable systems and green solutions – particularly with regards to architecture – compels a reconsideration of this mosque through a new lens: that of environmentalism and sustainability. Thus\, this talk explores how ancient architectures such as the Djenne mosque\, which has existed in one iteration or another for over 700 hundred years\, may have lessons to teach us about contemporary and even future-facing sustainable architectural solutions. \nIn rethinking the Djenne mosque through the lenses of both faith and environmentalism\, one sees how Islam and sustainable architecture exist within the mosque as a collaborative system\, providing potential lessons for humanity to consider as we plan for an increasingly uncertain future. \nMichelle Apotsos is an Associate Professor of Art History at Williams College\, where she teaches courses about Africa\, Islam\, and the built environment. She  is the author of Architecture\, Islam\, and Identity in West Africa: Lessons from Larabanga (Routledge\, 2016) and The Masjid in Contemporary Islamic Africa (Cambridge University Press\, 2021). Enjoy live music from the Berkshire Hills Chorus beginning at 5:30 pm downtown! \n  \nNUarts Studios & Gallery\, the largest artist and artisan studio collective in downtown Pittsfield\, will host a holiday open studios event on December 3\, 5 to 8 pm. Among the artists opening their studios on December 3rd are Stefanie Bessman\, Myk Daigle\, Val Fox\, Kathy Gideon\, Caroline Kelley\, Shany Porras\, Ilene Richard\, Marney Schorr\, and Sally Tiska Rice. \n  \nThose participating in the open studios will offer artwork and wares for sale that would be perfect for holiday gifting. Join Marney Schorr for free\, handmade ornament making for all ages. Entrances to NUarts are at 311 North Street and 21 Union Street. \n  \nNew to Artswalk\, Soma’s Aromas\, 81 East Street\, will present “Mandalas in Bloom” by Elizabeth Nelson for the month of December. There will be a reception with the artist on December 3\, 5 to 8 pm. Hot Plate Brewing will pour samples\, and Elizabeth will create a mandala in real time to show her process. \n  \nThe Unitarian Universalist Church of Pittsfield\, 175 Wendell Avenue\, will present a group show entitled “When Heaven & Nature Sing”\, December 3 through January 17. Featuring photography\, paintings\, pastels\, and mixed-media art\, this group show includes pieces by Paula Dambrauskas\, Phyllis Prysby\, and Sal deBethune. There will be an opportunity to visit with the artists on Friday\, December 3\, 5 to 8 pm\, as part of First Fridays Artswalk. At the craft table in the Social Hall\, visitors will be invited to create\, collage\, and exchange winter holiday cards to take home. \n  \nMembers of the Guild of Berkshire Artists will celebrate the holiday season during the month of December at TKG Real Estate\, 137 North Street. Sam de Soto (lowercase d studios\, they/he) is an artist\, musician\, and teacher from Long Island\, NY. Largely influenced by abstract expressionism\, street art\, and modern design\, Sam’s work ranges from large canvases to digital photo manipulations. This is their first gallery installation. \n  \nMCLA Pittsfield at 66 Allen Street will feature an art show by Molly Paluilis for the month of December. About her work\, Paluilis says\, “(it) is about feeling using color\, shape\, rhythm\, and movement. It shows healing\, chaos\, excitement\, pain\, and resilience in ways that words cannot. It is used as an outlet to express the inexpressible.” \n  \nThere will be an opening reception in conjunction with First Fridays Artswalk from 5 to 6:30 pm on December 3. Choose from holiday wreaths\, kissing balls\, and centerpieces all handmade by local artists. \n  \nHotel on North\, 297 North Street\, will feature WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE by Scott Taylor for the December Artswalk. WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE is a sampling of the work Taylor created during the pandemic. Many of the paintings speak of containment\, some visually looking outward\, some inward. Some return to a simpler time that we once knew hoping to find comfort in our own existence. There will be an opportunity to visit with the artist on Friday\, December 3\, 5 to 8 pm\, as part of First Fridays Artswalk. \n  \nThe Berkshire Museum\, 39 South Street\, will present Museum of the Moon\, an awe-inspiring installation of lunar views and glowing moonlight through January 9\, 2022. A combination of art\, science\, and sound\, this radiant installation was created using NASA imagery of the lunar surface\, inspiring those who experience it to contemplate the many ways the Moon connects humankind across time and culture. There will be extended museum hours every Friday evening until 7:30 pm. Admission is required. Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for children aged 4-17. Children 3 and under and museum members are free. \n  \nThe December Artswalk will also highlight art celebrating Cultural Appreciation Week 2021 in the windows of Berkshire Juvenile Court\, 190 North Street. With more than 41 million Americans over the age of 65 in the United States\, the question becomes how much (or\, perhaps\, what type) of memory loss is to be expected as one gets older and what should trigger a visit to the doctor. Join Dr. Andrew Budson for this virtual Zoom talk where he will discuss his award-winning book\, Seven Steps to Managing Your Memory: What’s Normal\, What’s Not\, and What to Do About It\, which explains how individuals can distinguish changes in memory due to Alzheimer’s versus normal aging\, what medications\, diets\, and exercise regimes can help\, and the best habits\, strategies\, and memory aids to use\, in seven simple steps. He will also discuss his newest book\, Six Steps to Managing Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia: A Guide for Families\, including how families can manage issues with memory\, language\, vision\, behavior\, driving\, incontinence\, sleep\, and more. \nAndrew E. Budson\, MD\, majored in chemistry and philosophy at Haverford College before receiving his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. Dr. Budson is Professor of Neurology at Boston University\, Lecturer in Neurology at Harvard Medical School\, and Chief of Cognitive & Behavioral Neurology at the Veterans Affairs Boston Healthcare System. DESCRIPTION:The OLLI Tech Impact Forum presents:\nElectrifying Transportation\nAn Online Talk with Toyota’s Hydrogen Fuel Cell and Electrified Vehicle Heads\nTuesday\, November 16\, 5 pm\nFree and open to all | Online via Zoom\nClick here to RSVP \n  \nGiven the major role of automotive transportation worldwide in the increasing level of greenhouse gas emissions\, it has become clear for years that electrification is the best way forward. At the same time\, it must be understood that electrification is the biggest transition the automotive industry has ever had to face. There are major challenges along the entire value chain that need to be resolved in order to reach this goal. One important example is the complementary role of battery electric and fuel cell electric technologies. \nTo explain and clarify these issues\, we have two speakers from Toyota\, a company that has been addressing environmental issues for over 30 years. Dr. Stephan Herbst\, currently acting as the Technical Head Powertrain Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Business Unit of Toyota Motor Europe’s (TME) R&D and Fuel Cell Business Group\, is responsible for hydrogen strategy\, new products and sustainable mobility. He is on the Management Board of the Hydrogen Council and actively involved in Hydrogen Europe. Ash Corson is the Senior Manager for the Electrified Vehicle & Technologies Office (EVTO) of Toyota Motor North America. To what degree are these tensions the product of Trump-era policy changes toward China\, and how (if at all) have these policies changed under President Biden’s leadership? This talk will describe the political changes in China and the US that have produced the current tensions in the bilateral relationship\, and assess the prospects for cooperation between the two countries.  \n  \nSara Newland is an Assistant Professor of government at Smith College\, where her teaching and research focus on the domestic and international politics of mainland China and Taiwan. Online via Zoom. \n  \nHumor in the time of Covid? Perhaps now more than ever\, humor and laughter are needed to cope with the unexpected\, the vicissitudes of life\, and difficult times. The presentation will discuss humor styles and personality traits\, integrate insights from areas such as psychology\, sociology\, and cultural anthropology to not only point to humor as a coping strategy\, but to also illustrate the many other ways in which humor and laughter impact mental and physical well-being. \n  \nRita Nnodim\, Ph.D. graduated from Johannes-Gutenberg University\, Mainz (Germany) with a Masters in African Languages and Literatures. She holds a PhD in West African Studies from the University of Birmingham\, UK. She is an Associate Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts\, where she teaches courses such as Introduction to Cross-cultural and Social Justice Studies\, Global Refugees of the 21st Century\, Madness & Society\, as well as her new class on Humor\, Laughter\, and Comedy. The audience will travel through the house experiencing each of its 21 rooms as a “rite of passage” in the lives of Women of Color from birth to death. There will be 10 live performances\, with afternoon and evening performance blocks.\n\n20/20 Vision will feature rooms titled “Migration/Diaspora”\, “No Longer Silent”\, “Sustenance” and “Legacy” – exploring issues relevant today such as #BlackLivesMatter\, #MeToo\, immigration justice\, LGBTQ rights\, and reproductive justice. DESCRIPTION:The OLLI Distinguished Speakers Series presents \nAmherst College Professor \nFranklin Odo on \nJapanese Americans in World War II \nWednesday\, August 4\, 5:30 pm \nOnline via Zoom \n\nClick here to register safely and securely online\,\nor call 413.236.2190 (M-F 9am-4pm) to register by phone with a credit card. \n\nThree months after Pearl Harbor was bombed and the U.S. entered WWII\, the nation began incarcerating 120\,000 Americans of Japanese descent\, some of whom were not released until early 1946. This was justified on the basis of national security\, but in 1988 President Ronald Reagan apologized on behalf of the nation and George H.W. Bush issued reparations checks of $20\,000 to all survivors. \nDuring World War Two Japanese Americans seeking to demonstrate patriotism served in the military\, earning numerous combat honors; others went to prison protesting the draft when their families were still behind barbed wire. The Supreme Court upheld these convictions but the cases were vacated in 1983. This episode in American history is one example of our nation’s ongoing and complex history of reconciling national security needs with commitment to the rights of individuals and groups.  \n\nProfessor Franklin Odo is a Japanese American historian\, activist\, and teacher. He received his B.A. in History from Princeton University\, his M.A. in East Asia Regional Studies from Harvard\, and his Ph.D. with a dissertation on Japanese feudalism from Princeton. He was an early leader of Asian American Studies and other Ethnic Studies in the late 1960s. He has taught at numerous institutions including Occidental College\, UCLA\, Cal State Long Beach\, University of Pennsylvania\, University of Maryland College Park\, Hunter College\, Princeton University\, and Columbia University. Odo was director of Ethnic Studies at the University of Hawaii\, and from 1989-1991\, he served as President of the Association for Asian American Studies. He has published extensively. In 1997\, Odo became the founding Director of the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Program\, where he brought and created numerous exhibits featuring Asian Americans. He is currently the Simpson Lecturer at Amherst College. \n\n\n Admission is $10 for OLLI at BCC\, Massachusetts Village and Berkshire Museum members\, and $15 for the general public.
