WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE is a sampling of the work Taylor created during the pandemic. Many of the paintings speak of containment\, some visually looking outward\, some inward. Some return to a simpler time that we once knew hoping to find comfort in our own existence. There will be a reception with the artist on Friday\, November 5\, 5 to 8 pm\, as part of First Fridays Artswalk. \n  \nThe Brothership Building Window at 141 North Street\, curated by IS183 Art School of the Berkshires\, will feature “Little Kids\, Big Issues” by Stephanie VanBramer\, November 5-28. \n  \nRegularly taking inspiration from personal experiences\, conversations\, thoughts about everyday life\, and the lessons she has learned along the way\, VanBramer creates artwork that sparks reality checks and speaks out\, making it known that it has something to say. She creates little characters with big personalities and even bigger ideas. \n  \nArtists in the Guild of Berkshire Artists will show their work in a show entitled Plein Air in the Berkshires during the month of November at TKG Real Estate\, 137 North Street. There will be a reception as part of First Fridays Artswalk on Friday\, November 5\, 5 to 8 pm. The work will be up during the month of November and can be viewed when TKG is open. Featured artists are Sally Lebwohl\, pastels; Jorie Latham\, watercolors and mixed media; and Debbie Schneer\, photography. \n  \nMCLA Pittsfield at 66 Allen Street will feature an art show of faces by Dana Schildkraut from November 5-30. Schildkraut is an award-winning artist and educator who resides in Southern Vermont\, working in mixed media: paper mache\, watercolor paint\, and polymer clay. \n  \nThere will be an opening reception as part of First Fridays Artswalk from 5 to 6:30 pm on November 5. After the opening\, Schildkraut’s work can be viewed by appointment Monday through Friday\, 9 am to 4 pm. Additional gallery hours are Wednesday through Friday\, 11 am to 3 pm\, or by appointment. \n  \nThe Unitarian Universalist Church of Pittsfield\, 175 Wendell Avenue\, will present a show by mother-daughter team\, Kerry and Kamille Hylton\, for the month of November. Music on North. \n  \nSinger/songwriter Jaane Doe will perform at Sotille Park\, 200 North Street. Freestyle acoustic rocker\, Garrin Benfield\, will be at Persip Park\, 175 North Street; and musical trio\, The Midnight Anthem\, will perform at the Marketplace Cafe’s parklet at 53 North Street. \n  \nFrom 7:30 to 9 pm\, the Colonial Theatre\, 111 South Street\, will host the “On The Wall Video Art Show”. All are welcome to experience this free\, unique outdoor show of video art created by 9 local artists projected on the south wall of the Colonial Theatre. DESCRIPTION:The OLLI Distinguished Speakers Series presents \n  \nMCLA Professor Rita Nnodim on \nHumor\, Laughter\, and Well-Being \n  \nFriday\, September 17\, 3 pm. Online via Zoom. \n  \nHumor in the time of Covid? Perhaps now more than ever\, humor and laughter are needed to cope with the unexpected\, the vicissitudes of life\, and difficult times. The presentation will discuss humor styles and personality traits\, integrate insights from areas such as psychology\, sociology\, and cultural anthropology to not only point to humor as a coping strategy\, but to also illustrate the many other ways in which humor and laughter impact mental and physical well-being. \n  \nRita Nnodim\, Ph.D. graduated from Johannes-Gutenberg University\, Mainz (Germany) with a Masters in African Languages and Literatures. She holds a PhD in West African Studies from the University of Birmingham\, UK. She is an Associate Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts\, where she teaches courses such as Introduction to Cross-cultural and Social Justice Studies\, Global Refugees of the 21st Century\, Madness & Society\, as well as her new class on Humor\, Laughter\, and Comedy. She has authored book chapters and scholarly articles on postcolonial anglophone urban fiction and regularly presents her work at national and international academic conferences. \n  \nAdmission is $10 for OLLI at BCC\, Massachusetts Village and Berkshire Museum members\, and $15 for the general public. DESCRIPTION:The OLLI Distinguished Speakers Series presents \nAmherst College Professor \nFranklin Odo on \nJapanese Americans in World War II \nWednesday\, August 4\, 5:30 pm \nOnline via Zoom \n\nClick here to register safely and securely online\,\nor call 413.236.2190 (M-F 9am-4pm) to register by phone with a credit card. \n\nThree months after Pearl Harbor was bombed and the U.S. entered WWII\, the nation began incarcerating 120\,000 Americans of Japanese descent\, some of whom were not released until early 1946. This was justified on the basis of national security\, but in 1988 President Ronald Reagan apologized on behalf of the nation and George H.W. Bush issued reparations checks of $20\,000 to all survivors. \nDuring World War Two Japanese Americans seeking to demonstrate patriotism served in the military\, earning numerous combat honors; others went to prison protesting the draft when their families were still behind barbed wire. The Supreme Court upheld these convictions but the cases were vacated in 1983. This episode in American history is one example of our nation’s ongoing and complex history of reconciling national security needs with commitment to the rights of individuals and groups.  \n\nProfessor Franklin Odo is a Japanese American historian\, activist\, and teacher. He received his B.A. in History from Princeton University\, his M.A. in East Asia Regional Studies from Harvard\, and his Ph.D. with a dissertation on Japanese feudalism from Princeton. He was an early leader of Asian American Studies and other Ethnic Studies in the late 1960s. He has taught at numerous institutions including Occidental College\, UCLA\, Cal State Long Beach\, University of Pennsylvania\, University of Maryland College Park\, Hunter College\, Princeton University\, and Columbia University. Odo was director of Ethnic Studies at the University of Hawaii\, and from 1989-1991\, he served as President of the Association for Asian American Studies. He has published extensively. In 1997\, Odo became the founding Director of the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Program\, where he brought and created numerous exhibits featuring Asian Americans. He is currently the Simpson Lecturer at Amherst College. \n\n\n Admission is $10 for OLLI at BCC\, Massachusetts Village and Berkshire Museum members\, and $15 for the general public. DESCRIPTION:For the month of July\, First Fridays Artswalk will present the first Artswalk of 2021 which will encompass a variety of indoor and outdoor locations in and around the downtown Pittsfield area. \n  \nEnjoy brand new indoor art shows\, murals\, and Artscape’s Pittsfield Paintboxes during the First Fridays Artswalk on Friday\, July 2\, 5 to 8 pm\, and all month long. You can view all locations at www.FirstFridaysArtswalk.com\, and new this year\, you can download the PocketSights app to follow a virtual walking tour on your cell phone. \n  \nCommunity Access to the Arts (CATA) will present its annual art show\, I Am a Part of Art\, at the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts\, 28 Renne Avenue\, July 1-July 31. I Am a Part of Art features a vibrant collection of paintings\, drawings\, and sculptures by more than 100 artists with disabilities. A total of over 150 works of art will be on display and available for sale at the Lichtenstein and the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown\, with proceeds benefiting CATA programs as well as individual artists. The show can be viewed at the Lichtenstein during the First Fridays Artswalk on July 2 from 5 to 8 pm\, Wednesday through Friday from 11 am to 3 pm\, and by appointment. Admission is free. \n  \nHotel on North\, 297 North Street\, will feature Electric Color by Jesse Tobin McCauley for the July Artswalk. There will be a reception with the artist on Friday\, July 2\, 5 to 8 pm\, as part of First Fridays Artswalk. \n  \nMcCauley’s paintings are mixed media on canvas and paper – bursts of bold\, bright\, saturated color. They evoke a feeling of happiness through the flood of interacting abstract color. \n  \nThe Brothership Building Window at 141 North Street\, curated by IS183 Art School of the Berkshires\, will feature The Grass Is Always Greener by Jackie Fischer for the month of July. The Grass Is Always Greener invites the viewer into a cheerful and upbeat atmosphere. As you walk around\, however\, you start to notice dark truths. \n  \nFor the month of July\, The Dot Gallery at Dottie’s Coffee Lounge\, 444 North Street\, will feature Thompson\, Galli and Barker “Obsessions”. There will be an opening reception on Friday\, July 2\, 4 to 7 pm\, as part of First Fridays Artswalk. Works by Kris Galli\, Robert Barker\, Ashley Yang-Thompson\, and Diane Firtell will be exhibited. \n  \nThe Unitarian Universalist Church of Pittsfield\, 175 Wendell Avenue\, will feature photographs by Linda Merry for the month of July. The show will feature photographic images of the moments that were shared between different bird species and the woman behind the lens. There will be framed photographic prints on exhibit as well as a digital exhibition showcasing additional works. There will be an opening reception on Friday\, July 2\, 5 to 8 pm\, as part of First Fridays Artswalk. \n  \nArtists in the Guild of Berkshire Artists will show their work in a show entitled Plein Air in the Berkshires during the month of July at TKG Real Estate\, 137 North Street. There will be a reception as part of First Friday Artswalk on Friday\, July 2\, 5 to 8 pm. The work will be up during the month of July and can be viewed when TKG is open. Featured artists are Karen Carmean\, Keith Emerling\, Jon Caplan\, Walt Pasko\, and Pat Hogan. \n  \nArchive/Project Space at 141 North Street\, Suite #1\, will feature works by James Casebere for the July First Fridays Artswalk. Viewing hours are Thursday and Friday\, 2 to 5 pm\, and Saturday\, 11 am to 5 pm. The exhibition will be open throughout the month\, and the gallery will be open during the First Fridays Artswalk from 5 to 8 pm on July 2. \n  \nFor the month of July\, The Marketplace Café\, 53 North Street\, will feature paintings by Shany Porras. Porras’ paintings offer a way to visually communicate what is being experienced with music. There will be an opening reception on Friday\, July 2\, 5 to 8 pm\, as part of First Fridays Artswalk. \n  \nThe July Artswalk will also highlight murals downtown including: The Sun Will Rise by Jesse Tobin McCauley\, Jay Tobin and Stephanie Quetti at 443 North Street and Gaia on Melville Street by Mike Carty. Also highlighted will be all of Artscape’s Pittsfield Paintboxes. \n  \nAll art exhibits are on display in participating venues throughout the month. That was the question facing John F. Kennedy at the height of the Cold War— a moment when the Soviet Union built the wall in Berlin\, tested nuclear bombs more destructive than any in history\, and beat the US to every major milestone in space. The race to the heavens seemed a race for survival— and America was losing. When John Glenn blasted into orbit on February 20\, 1962\, his mission was greater than circling Earth; it was to calm the fears of the free world and renew America’s sense of self- belief. Mercury Rising re- creates the sense of tension to a flight that riveted the world.
