DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, July 12 at 11 am\, join author Ty Allan Jackson in the Berkshire Athenaeum’s auditorium for Storytime and Craft! \n  \nTy will read his book “When I Close My Eyes” to be followed by an opportunity to meet the author and participate in a collage craft activity inspired by the book. 100 signed copies of “When I Close My Eyes”\, along with handy tote and pencil case\, have been donated by Blue Q for children who attend this event. The event is free\, and no registration is required. Masks are required for all indoor children’s programs at the library. \n  \nThis event is part of the Downtown Pittsfield StoryWalk® which runs July 7-31 and is brought to you by Downtown Pittsfield\, Inc. and the Berkshire Athenaeum. DESCRIPTION:For the month of July\, First Fridays Artswalk will present the first Artswalk of 2021 which will encompass a variety of indoor and outdoor locations in and around the downtown Pittsfield area. \n  \nEnjoy brand new indoor art shows\, murals\, and Artscape’s Pittsfield Paintboxes during the First Fridays Artswalk on Friday\, July 2\, 5 to 8 pm\, and all month long. You can view all locations at www.FirstFridaysArtswalk.com\, and new this year\, you can download the PocketSights app to follow a virtual walking tour on your cell phone. \n  \nCommunity Access to the Arts (CATA) will present its annual art show\, I Am a Part of Art\, at the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts\, 28 Renne Avenue\, July 1-July 31. I Am a Part of Art features a vibrant collection of paintings\, drawings\, and sculptures by more than 100 artists with disabilities. A total of over 150 works of art will be on display and available for sale at the Lichtenstein and the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown\, with proceeds benefiting CATA programs as well as individual artists. The show can be viewed at the Lichtenstein during the First Fridays Artswalk on July 2 from 5 to 8 pm\, Wednesday through Friday from 11 am to 3 pm\, and by appointment. Admission is free. \n  \nHotel on North\, 297 North Street\, will feature Electric Color by Jesse Tobin McCauley for the July Artswalk. There will be a reception with the artist on Friday\, July 2\, 5 to 8 pm\, as part of First Fridays Artswalk. \n  \nMcCauley’s paintings are mixed media on canvas and paper – bursts of bold\, bright\, saturated color. They evoke a feeling of happiness through the flood of interacting abstract color. \n  \nThe Brothership Building Window at 141 North Street\, curated by IS183 Art School of the Berkshires\, will feature The Grass Is Always Greener by Jackie Fischer for the month of July. The Grass Is Always Greener invites the viewer into a cheerful and upbeat atmosphere. As you walk around\, however\, you start to notice dark truths. \n  \nFor the month of July\, The Dot Gallery at Dottie’s Coffee Lounge\, 444 North Street\, will feature Thompson\, Galli and Barker “Obsessions”. There will be an opening reception on Friday\, July 2\, 4 to 7 pm\, as part of First Fridays Artswalk. Works by Kris Galli\, Robert Barker\, Ashley Yang-Thompson\, and Diane Firtell will be exhibited. \n  \nThe Unitarian Universalist Church of Pittsfield\, 175 Wendell Avenue\, will feature photographs by Linda Merry for the month of July. The show will feature photographic images of the moments that were shared between different bird species and the woman behind the lens. There will be framed photographic prints on exhibit as well as a digital exhibition showcasing additional works. There will be an opening reception on Friday\, July 2\, 5 to 8 pm\, as part of First Fridays Artswalk. \n  \nArtists in the Guild of Berkshire Artists will show their work in a show entitled Plein Air in the Berkshires during the month of July at TKG Real Estate\, 137 North Street. There will be a reception as part of First Friday Artswalk on Friday\, July 2\, 5 to 8 pm. The work will be up during the month of July and can be viewed when TKG is open. Featured artists are Karen Carmean\, Keith Emerling\, Jon Caplan\, Walt Pasko\, and Pat Hogan. \n  \nArchive/Project Space at 141 North Street\, Suite #1\, will feature works by James Casebere for the July First Fridays Artswalk. Viewing hours are Thursday and Friday\, 2 to 5 pm\, and Saturday\, 11 am to 5 pm. The exhibition will be open throughout the month\, and the gallery will be open during the First Fridays Artswalk from 5 to 8 pm on July 2. \n  \nFor the month of July\, The Marketplace Café\, 53 North Street\, will feature paintings by Shany Porras. Porras’ paintings offer a way to visually communicate what is being experienced with music. There will be an opening reception on Friday\, July 2\, 5 to 8 pm\, as part of First Fridays Artswalk. \n  \nThe July Artswalk will also highlight murals downtown including: The Sun Will Rise by Jesse Tobin McCauley\, Jay Tobin and Stephanie Quetti at 443 North Street and Gaia on Melville Street by Mike Carty. That was the question facing John F. Kennedy at the height of the Cold War— a moment when the Soviet Union built the wall in Berlin\, tested nuclear bombs more destructive than any in history\, and beat the US to every major milestone in space. DESCRIPTION:The OLLI Distinguished Speakers Series presents\nProfessor David Baum on \nWhat is Living and What is Dead in Fascism?\nThe 20th Century’s Most Troubling and Enduring Idea at 100  \nThursday\, June 10\, 2021 at 7:00 pm Eastern \nOnline via Zoom \nClick here to register safely and securely online\nor call 413.236.2190 (M-F 9am-4pm) to register by phone with a credit card. \nWhen Bard College at Simon’s Rock Professor David Baum first began to be interested in the Fascist period in Italy a little over 20 years ago\, Fascism seemed a dead letter\, the very stuff of disinterested scholarship. Since then\, of course\, it’s experienced quite the revival. The 2016 election triggered the publication of at least four noteworthy books on fascism intended for broad audiences and at the same time conjured a movement – Antifa\, short for anti-fascism – that very much held that its nemesis was back. The term “fascist\,” for the longest time merely a generic term of opprobrium\, elbowed its way back into the political lexicon. \nIn retrospect\, the assumption that Fascism was an extinct political species now appears wildly naïve. Current attempts to understand the populist right and hyper nationalists\, here and around the globe\, tend to focus on two causes: one sees rightwing populism as a kind of false consciousness\, a misguided reaction to the economic upheaval of the 21st century; the other\, the playing out of an imbedded racism in American life responding to the perceived threat of demographic change to white privilege. Both explanations have merit\, but ultimately\, we need to return to the origins of Fascism in the post-Great War period to better understand both the forces that initially called forth the movement and the prejudices of the dominant ideological discourses – liberal and socialist/communist – that weakened the West’s response to Fascism’s rise. \nDavid Baum received his PhD in European History from Yale University and has taught at New York University\, Skidmore College\, Union College\, the American University in Iraq-Sulaimani\, West Texas A&M University and is currently at Bard College at Simon’s Rock in Great Barrington. He is also the head of school at the John Dewey Academy\, also in Great Barrington. His research and teaching have focused on the Italian Renaissance\, Italian Fascism\, and the Modern Middle East. His current research project is on views of the Renaissance during the inter-war period in Italy\, entitled\, Fascism and the Italian Renaissance. \nAdmission is $10 for OLLI at BCC and Berkshire Museum members\, and $15 for the general public.
