No experience is necessary to participate. Dunham Mall can be located by entering 100 North Street on your GPS. \nAt the final Sunday\, September 21 session\, enjoy a free interactive event\, where you can build your own instruments to use in collaborative music-making and dancing. \nWhat happens when rhythm becomes a language of belonging? \nSíncoPaz\, Raíces y Ritmos (Roots & Rhythm)\, is a new community-based music project that invites people of all ages and backgrounds to create sound together. \nPart workshop and jam – and definitely a celebration – SíncoPaz is less about performance and more about what emerges when we listen and respond to find resonance with one another. \nSíncoPaz explores the power of síncopa (syncopation) and paz (peace) as metaphors for collective life: How might we hold tension and release? \nHow do we find the pulse between difference and unity? How can rhythm become a bridge across language\, cultures\, and experiences? \nParticipants will have the chance to build their own instruments — cajóns\, rattles\, drums — and use them in collaborative music-making and dancing that emphasizes connection over perfection. SíncoPaz’s intention is to create a space where finding the beat together and coming into sync is an act of community.

DESCRIPTION:Downtown Pittsfield\, Inc. will hold a Ribbon Cutting in Dunham Mall for Emily Elizabeth Bunnell’s Map of Downtown Pittsfield on Friday\, September 5th at 6:15 pm during the September 5 First Fridays at Five. This map\, created as part of the Reimagine Dunham Mall effort\, is the first of several wayfinding efforts being introduced in the Downtown in partnership with Downtown Pittsfield\, Inc.\, MassDevelopment’s Transformative Development Initiative (TDI)\, and the City of Pittsfield. \n“My process for this map started with concepting several different approaches for the map and meeting with the Pittsfield team to select a style that best fit their needs and wants\,” says Emily. “Upon a selection of an isometric map\, I cross referenced images of downtown with historical and satellite images to create a complete pencil and ink drawing of all the streets and buildings of downtown Pittsfield. I then scanned\, digitally fine-tuned\, and colored that map and created landmark labels. The final product represents multiple rounds of drawings and internal feedback to best highlight the walkability and major sites of Downtown Pittsfield in an approachable and playful design\, with a hope that this invites more people to enjoy the many sites\, shops\, and dining options the area has to offer on foot.” \nEmily Elizabeth Bunnell is a painter and graphic designer living in Windsor\, MA. She loves exploring the wild spaces\, building community\, and engaging with the art and music scene unique to Western MA and New England. She hopes to create work that connects people with each other and the larger world around them. The three mosaic mural panels created by Markey are intended to beautify downtown as part of the Reimagine Dunham Mall effort. \nReimagine Dunham Mall aims to support area business\, recreation\, pedestrian networks\, and parking accessibility for residents and visitors of downtown Pittsfield. \nReimagine Dunham Mall and this mural project are supported by a MassDevelopment grant with a funding match by Pittsfield Beautiful and community donations. \nBased on public input\, Downtown Pittsfield\, Inc. added 8 large planters to Dunham Mall with Heritage Birch trees to provide shade and natural habitats\, smaller planters filled with colorful annuals\, seating\, and a pop of color with Markey’s mosaic murals. These projects are to support the use and beautification of Dunham Mall. \nThe inspiration provided to Markey for his mosaic murals was that Pittsfield is where nature and city meet and that Dunham Mall where the murals would be located has become a hub of activity with events like Rhythmscape – a free\, outdoor Summer Dance Series\, The Pitt – a free\, outdoor Summer Concert Series\, and Dance on Dunham during the First Fridays at Five. \nRobert Markey is an artist who has worked in many media over the years including painting\, sculpture\, installation\, video\, and mosaics. He has done public art projects in cities around the country including New York\, Boston\, Philadelphia\, Houston\, and Minneapolis. His first video was aired on PBS\, and he received national media coverage for his public performance work on domestic violence. \nRobert has done mosaic murals in Brazil\, Chile\, Mexico\, Cambodia\, Sri Lanka\, Israel\, India\, Afghanistan\, and the U.S. creating mosaic murals with youth in vulnerable situations. He has done painted murals with refugees in the U.S. and Greece\, and with tribal painters in India. \nHis sculptures have been featured in various locations around the country\, including The Norman Rockwell Museum and Chesterwood in Stockbridge\, 3 Sisters Sanctuary in Goshen\, and Sculpture Fest in Woodstock\, VT. \n“I was asked to do three mosaic mural panels about Pittsfield\,” says Robert. “The city sent me many pictures of the city and people in the city\, and I also took some photos of the city.” \n“The first panel is about the river and the mountains around Pittsfield. The second panel is people dancing and a man in a wheelchair. The third panel is the center of the city with two tall buildings and some trees.” \n“It was an interesting process to make these mosaic panels – one is a far view\, one is a close up\, and one is a medium distance view. Deciding on colors was also interesting – the colors of the river\, the two different sky colors\, and deciding to make the background color of the dancers white.”

(437 North Street). \nFeatured artists are Susan Gail Catelotti\, Melissa Matsuki Lillie\, Anastasia Drayton\, and Eternity Joy Alice Williams. \nThere will be an opening reception with the artists during the September 5 First Fridays Artswalk from 5 to 8 pm. \nThe exhibition will be on view Monday through Thursday\, 10 am to 2 pm\, September 5 through September 25\, by visiting the Downtown Pittsfield\, Inc. offices at 431 North Street. \nThe Pittsfield Paintbox Program is a program of the City of Pittsfield’s Office of Cultural Development. The Paintbox Program celebrates local artists\, enlivens the streetscape\, and discourages vandalism of utility boxes throughout the downtown. Four Paintbox designs will be installed in Pittsfield this summer by the artists in this exhibition at Framework by Downtown Pittsfield\, Inc. \nSusan Gail Catelotti is an artist\, illustrator\, and graphic designer based in Peru\, Massachusetts. She holds a degree in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design and has illustrated more than 15 children’s books for a range of authors. Her work also includes public art and mural projects all rooted in her love for storytelling through image. \nDeeply inspired by the forests\, wildlife\, and quiet magic of the Berkshires\, Susan often begins her creative process by exploring the natural world around her. Her paintings and illustrations are filled with creatures—both real and imagined—that add a sense of whimsy\, weirdness\, and delight to every scene. Whether she’s illustrating a picture book or painting a woodland tableau\, her work invites viewers to pause\, look closer\, and rediscover a sense of wonder. \nMelissa Matsuki Lillie is painter whose artwork references natural forms using a personal visual language of vibrant colors and complex layers to reflect on the macroscopic and microscopic world. Her paintings evoke a sense of space that has been flattened and layered\, revealing strands and structures of line and color interacting fluidly with hidden landscapes. In addition to painting\, she frequently works sculpturally\, creating forms that celebrate both line and color. \nBorn in Maryland\, Melissa attended the Maryland Institute College of Art where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. She currently lives and works in the Berkshire Hills of Massachusetts. \nFor over two decades\, Anastasia Drayton has had the privilege of working as a horticulturist in the Berkshire landscape. This time spent observing plants and ecosystems has deepened her understanding of the natural world and its connection to human-made spaces. Her work—both in horticulture and art—is rooted in yielding to nature\, allowing it to shape and inspire her designs. \nWatercolor plays a central role in Anastasia’s process\, applied in a way that allows it to move freely across the surface – guided more by gravity and chance than by control. Anastasia works in other mediums as well\, but always with a sense that she is only gently guiding the creative process. She often incorporates natural elements like branches and lichens whose forms mirror organic patterns\, allowing nature to shape the composition. In this way\, the human hand becomes secondary; instead\, she trusts the materials and environment to create their own beauty. By letting nature guide each piece\, it reminds the viewer that we don’t always need to cling so tightly—things have a way of unfolding as they’re meant to\, naturally and inevitably. Anastasia finds so much resilience\, hope\, and peace in the natural world\, and through her art\, she aims to honor that connection and invite others to see the world with the same reverence. \nEternity Joy Alice Williams is currently pursuing her associate’s degree in Fine Arts at Berkshire Community College. When creating works of art\, she usually likes using Prismacolor colored pencils and oil pastels\, along with other materials. She’s always had a love for drawing\, but recently she has had more of a focus on different vegetables and fruits. With them\, she wants to display the importance of fresh produce in communities. \nThe gallery at Framework by Downtown Pittsfield\, Inc. is funded in part by a grant from the Pittsfield Cultural Council; a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency.

The mural will debut at a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony this summer. Carly is also the City of Pittsfield’s inaugural artist-in-residence\, and she is currently working out of studio space in the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts. \nRiley Wilde’s journey as an aspiring visual artist began in 2021 and has become vital in expressing herself in ways that words can’t anymore. Each painting is led by intuition and always with a new approach to create a vibrant and intriguing piece of work. \n“Sustainability is key to my process\, as it doesn’t feel right unless I’m practicing with a considerate mindset\,” says Riley. “Using recycled bottles for paint\, repurposing old canvases\, and catching excess drips to create new pieces is the only way I practice. Trying not to waste anything — creatively or emotionally.” \n“In the last year\, I’ve been expanding my practice while in collaboration with my partner and fellow artist\, Daniel Stone\, on some very large pieces. He has also challenged me to consider working with new surfaces\, styles\, and methods. Such as\, creating reliefs\, mosaics\, illustrating figures\, and using acrylic and wood surfaces. This has been rewarding and valuable in my growth as an artist and has made me feel seen. I’m looking forward to what my work continues to evolve into. Sometimes it’s messy and weird\, but also alive. A reflection of everything I’ve survived and everything I’ve yet to bloom into.” \nJesus Alicea is a multidisciplinary artist driven by a deep love for language and visual storytelling. His work explores the relationship between words and images—through logo design\, poster art\, cartoons\, poetry\, and creative writing. \nJesus creates playful yet purposeful visuals\, often using illustrated characters to deliver promotional messages in ways that text or live action can’t. “My design work focuses on clarity and meaning\, whether I’m crafting a logo or composing a visual narrative\,” says Jesus. \n“Storytelling is at the core of my practice. Through poetry and media projects\, I aim to connect with audiences in ways that are both creative and accessible. I’m always open to feedback\, collaboration\, and new creative challenges.” \nKenny Davis is a lifelong resident of Pittsfield who has worked on several murals around the city. “In my senior year at Pittsfield High School\, I both experimented with my 2D style and created 3D works to tell my unique story\,” says Kenny. “Now that I am eighteen years old\, I am working on developing a vibrant style that makes me proud!” \nThe gallery at Framework by Downtown Pittsfield\, Inc. is funded in part by a grant from the Pittsfield Cultural Council; a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency.

Carly is also the City of Pittsfield’s inaugural artist-in-residence\, and she is currently working out of studio space in the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts. \nRiley Wilde’s journey as an aspiring visual artist began in 2021 and has become vital in expressing herself in ways that words can’t anymore. Each painting is led by intuition and always with a new approach to create a vibrant and intriguing piece of work. \n“Sustainability is key to my process\, as it doesn’t feel right unless I’m practicing with a considerate mindset\,” says Riley. “Using recycled bottles for paint\, repurposing old canvases\, and catching excess drips to create new pieces is the only way I practice. Trying not to waste anything — creatively or emotionally.” \n“In the last year\, I’ve been expanding my practice while in collaboration with my partner and fellow artist\, Daniel Stone\, on some very large pieces. He has also challenged me to consider working with new surfaces\, styles\, and methods. Such as\, creating reliefs\, mosaics\, illustrating figures\, and using acrylic and wood surfaces. This has been rewarding and valuable in my growth as an artist and has made me feel seen. I’m looking forward to what my work continues to evolve into. Sometimes it’s messy and weird\, but also alive. A reflection of everything I’ve survived and everything I’ve yet to bloom into.” \nJesus Alicea is a multidisciplinary artist driven by a deep love for language and visual storytelling. His work explores the relationship between words and images—through logo design\, poster art\, cartoons\, poetry\, and creative writing. \nJesus creates playful yet purposeful visuals\, often using illustrated characters to deliver promotional messages in ways that text or live action can’t. “My design work focuses on clarity and meaning\, whether I’m crafting a logo or composing a visual narrative\,” says Jesus. \n“Storytelling is at the core of my practice. Through poetry and media projects\, I aim to connect with audiences in ways that are both creative and accessible. DESCRIPTION:POSTPONED due to chance of severe weather!  \n  \n“Rhythmscape” on Dunham Mall\, held on select Sunday afternoons from 6 to 8 pm through August 31\, highlights a different rhythm and instructor from our local community each session\, reflecting the many identities that make Pittsfield home. \nRhythmscape is free and open to all and encourages everyone to experience the joy of movement and the beauty of cultural exchange. No experience is necessary to participate. Dunham Mall can be located by entering 100 North Street on your GPS. \nThe sessions on August 10 and 17 will feature the fundamentals of Breaking with professional Breakdancer\, Andres Ramirez. \nEvent Schedule: \n★Opening Dance Cypher \n★Student Performance – Featuring dancers from The Funk Box Dance Studio \n★Community Dance Class (45 minutes to 1 hour) – Open to all ages and levels \nThe class will focus on the fundamentals of Breaking\, covering elements such as Toprock and Footwork. They will be structured as workshop-style sessions\, open to all ages. \n★Final Student Performance \n★Closing Open Cypher – An inclusive dance circle for anyone who would like to participate \nThe schedule for August 17th will follow a similar structure\, with one exciting addition — we’ll be hosting a small kids’ dance competition as the finale. It will be a fun\, family-friendly event where everyone can spectate and enjoy the kids showcasing their skills in a friendly battle format. \nAndres Ramirez is a professional Breakdancer\, instructor\, and owner of The Funk Box Dance Studio in Pittsfield. He travels and competes frequently as well as hosts his own Hip Hop festival in his hometown. Andres trains and coaches young athletes and dancers who compete at both national and world-level events. His biggest passion\, besides being a dad to 2 boys\, is passing down knowledge to his students and promoting the positive influence that Hip Hop culture can bring to communities. Andres also performs and choreographs many pieces for his studio which have been displayed in theaters and stages across the region including Jacob’s Pillow.

(437 North Street). \nFeatured artists are Carly Holmes\, Riley Wilde\, Jesus Alicea\, and Kenny Davis. \nThere will be an opening reception with the artists during the August 1st First Fridays Artswalk from 5 to 8 pm. \nThe exhibition will be on view Monday through Thursday\, 10 am to 2 pm\, August 1 through August 25\, by visiting the Downtown Pittsfield\, Inc. offices at 431 North Street. \nCarly Holmes is a lifelong resident of Pittsfield and describes herself as an emerging artist with a passion for creating art. “I have always loved creating art\,” Carly says. “As a child\, I was constantly drawing and crafting. I have explored drawing\, ceramics\, and 3-dimensional design. But painting with acrylics is where my true passion lies. I view my work as a reflection of my ever-evolving interests\, and as a personal outlet for self-expression.” \nThe Pittsfield Let It Shine! Public Art Partnership has selected Carly to co-create a new mural to be located at the Berkshire Regional Transit Authority Intermodal Center alongside mentor artist\, Jesse Tobin McCauley. The mural will debut at a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony this summer. Carly is also the City of Pittsfield’s inaugural artist-in-residence\, and she is currently working out of studio space in the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts. \nRiley Wilde’s journey as an aspiring visual artist began in 2021 and has become vital in expressing herself in ways that words can’t anymore. Each painting is led by intuition and always with a new approach to create a vibrant and intriguing piece of work. \n“Sustainability is key to my process\, as it doesn’t feel right unless I’m practicing with a considerate mindset\,” says Riley. “Using recycled bottles for paint\, repurposing old canvases\, and catching excess drips to create new pieces is the only way I practice. Trying not to waste anything — creatively or emotionally.” \n“In the last year\, I’ve been expanding my practice while in collaboration with my partner and fellow artist\, Daniel Stone\, on some very large pieces. He has also challenged me to consider working with new surfaces\, styles\, and methods. Such as\, creating reliefs\, mosaics\, illustrating figures\, and using acrylic and wood surfaces. This has been rewarding and valuable in my growth as an artist and has made me feel seen. I’m looking forward to what my work continues to evolve into. Sometimes it’s messy and weird\, but also alive. A reflection of everything I’ve survived and everything I’ve yet to bloom into.” \nJesus Alicea is a multidisciplinary artist driven by a deep love for language and visual storytelling. His work explores the relationship between words and images—through logo design\, poster art\, cartoons\, poetry\, and creative writing. \nJesus creates playful yet purposeful visuals\, often using illustrated characters to deliver promotional messages in ways that text or live action can’t. “My design work focuses on clarity and meaning\, whether I’m crafting a logo or composing a visual narrative\,” says Jesus. \n“Storytelling is at the core of my practice. Through poetry and media projects\, I aim to connect with audiences in ways that are both creative and accessible. I’m always open to feedback\, collaboration\, and new creative challenges.” \nKenny Davis is a lifelong resident of Pittsfield who has worked on several murals around the city. “In my senior year at Pittsfield High School\, I both experimented with my 2D style and created 3D works to tell my unique story\,” says Kenny. “Now that I am eighteen years old\, I am working on developing a vibrant style that makes me proud!” \nThe gallery at Framework by Downtown Pittsfield\, Inc. is funded in part by a grant from the Pittsfield Cultural Council; a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency.
