SUMMARY:The Machine Performs Pink Floyd
DESCRIPTION:The Machine\, America’s top Pink Floyd show\, has forged a 30-year reputation of excellence\, extending the legacy of Pink Floyd\, while creating another legacy all their own. Over the years\, The Machine has touched the hearts and souls of many\, selling out theaters\, premier rock clubs and casinos across North and Central America\, Europe and Asia. They have also appeared at renowned music festivals such as Bonnaroo\, Riverbend\, Gathering of the Vibes\, Buffalo’s Artpark and Germany’s Rock of Ages. \nThe New York based band focuses on making every show an authentic Floydian experience for their fans. Known for performing a diverse mix of The Floyd’s extensive 16-album repertoire\, complete with faithful renditions of popular hits as well as obscure gems\, The Machine’s stellar musicianship\, dramatic lighting and video and their passionate delivery sets them above and beyond the rest. \nIn the classic tradition\, The Machine explores collective improvisation paralleling early 1970s Pink Floyd. Their use of theatrical elements and elaborate stage displays continues in the spirit of the later Floyd lineups of the 1980s. The band is also known for recreating entire albums as a part of their show\, accepting requests from fans\, and for taking an A to Z approach in which one song is played for every letter of the alphabet. \nThe members of The Machine include founding members Joe Pascarell (guitar\, vocals) and Tahrah Cohen (drums)\, long time stagemate Scott Chasolen (keys\, vocals) and the newest addition to the band\, Dylan Kelehan (bass\, vocals).

SUMMARY:The OLLI Distinguished Speakers Series presents "What is Happiness?"
DESCRIPTION:The OLLI Distinguished Speakers Series presents\nWilliams College Professor Jana Sawicki on \nWhat is Happiness? \nTuesday\, February 22\, 7 pm \nOnline via Zoom  \nClick here to register safely and securely online or call 413.236.2190. \n  \nSince the time of Plato and Aristotle\, philosophers have discussed happiness: What is it? Is it primarily a pleasurable feeling? A psychological state of mind? A sense of well-being? In what sense can we describe a life as happy\, and what makes a life happy as such? What makes someone worthy of happiness? What can science tell us about happiness? Can happiness by measured? Is the value of happiness over-rated? What role does adversity play in a happy life? \nAlthough this lecture will not be able to engage all of these questions\, we will discuss some of the key debates in the philosophical literature with the aim of laying the groundwork for an interesting discussion and sharing our collective wisdom about the value of happiness. \nJana Sawicki is the Morris Professor of Rhetoric (in Philosophy) at Williams College\, and has been teaching at Williams for 30 years. Working closely with students\, she has had the opportunity to read and think together with them about questions of central concern: the challenges they face\, the experiences that they find meaningful\, their preoccupations and values\, their considerable capacity and potential role as future leaders. Many of their questions continue to be at the center of her own research and writing: Who are we today? How has the rise of the digital age and recent trends in globalization changed our ways of life and self-understandings in the contemporary US? What are some of the most significant problems facing us in the present\, and what can philosophy contribute to addressing them? How do we reconcile democratic liberalism with multiculturalism? How should we think about racial and political polarization and the threats posed to democracy? Professor Sawicki’s areas of expertise include published work on the widely influential French thinker Michel Foucault and receptions and uses of his work in feminist and queer theories\, as well as 19th and 20th century Continental philosophy\, particularly ethics and politics.  \nAdmission is $10 for OLLI at BCC and Berkshire Museum members\, and $15 for the general public. Admission is free for Berkshire Community College students\, youth 17 and under\, and those holding WIC\, EBT/SNAP\, or ConnectorCare cards. \nPresented in partnership with the Berkshire Museum

SUMMARY:USAF Heritage Brass
DESCRIPTION:The United States Air Force Heritage of America Band has a rich history of inspiring hearts and minds\, building and sustaining American patriotism and enhancing esprit de corps in the United States Air Force. It was one of the original Army Air Corps bands\, created by order of the Secretary of War on October 1\, 1941 and assigned to Barksdale Field\, Louisiana. In June 1946\, after a short stay at Brooks Field\, Texas\, the band arrived at Langley Field\, now Joint Base Langley-Eustis\, VA\, its current home. \nFor over 75 years\, the band has represented the Air Force with musical and military distinction. Members bring music to the mid-Atlantic in live concerts and to the nation in televised events such as The Today Show and the DESERT STORM National Victory Parade and presidential inaugural events. The Heritage of America Band has performed ceremonies for U.S presidents and foreign heads of state\, including the Queen of England and the President of France. Using today’s technology\, the band reaches a world wide audience through its website\, social media and audio recordings. Additionally\, the band travels more than 150\,000 miles to perform hundreds of concerts for listeners across a fifteen-state region from Maine to South Carolina. \nIn recent years\, the mission of Air Force Bands has become an expeditionary one. The Blue Aces were among the first groups to tour Southwest Asia and the Horn of Africa to support coalition and Joint forces serving in the Global War on Terrorism. \nThe USAF Heritage of America Band’s exceptional musicianship has earned international critical acclaim and numerous honors: eight Air Force Outstanding Unit Awards\, five Air Force Organizational Excellence Awards\, four Colonel George S. Howard Citations of Musical Excellence for Military Concert Band\, North Carolina’s Order of the Long Leaf Pine\, and countless state and municipal proclamations. The USAF Heritage of America Band remains at the forefront of preserving and enriching America’s musical heritage in the 21st century.

SUMMARY:The Irish Comedy Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Irish Comedy Tour is a fast-paced\, raucous ride across America with four joke-slinging entertainers who know how to party and have a great night. This high energy show takes the party atmosphere of a Dublin pub and combines it with a boisterous\, belly-laugh band of hooligans. The comedians\, whose ancestors hail from the Emerald Isle\, include Detroit native Derek Richards; Boston-born Mike McCarthy; Nova Scotia’s Damon Leibert; and from Inchicore\, a suburb of Dublin\, Ireland’s Derrick Keane. Don’t miss these hilarious Irish-American comedians as they tear apart\, as well as validate\, all of the Irish myths and stereotypes. \nDERRICK KEANE\nOriginally from Inchicore\, Derrick first distinguished himself musically when the duo in which he sang and played swept The All Ireland Talent Show. His band\, Inchicore\, sets the gold standard for the Irish music scene in New England and across North America. He’s shared the stage with greats such as Willie Nelson\, The Wolfe Tones\, The Furey Brothers and The Dublin City Ramblers. \nDAMON LEIBERT\nDamon Leibert’s unique and energetic style of fiddle playing lies somewhere between the driving dance beat of Cape Breton and the lyrical music of Ireland. He has performed innumerable concerts and festivals across North America and Europe\, and has worked in various theater\, film and recording projects. \nMIKE McCARTHY\nMike McCarthy’s no-holds-barred humor has landed him on Comedy Central and Showtime. The “comedy barbarian\,” as he calls himself\, takes no prisoners when it comes to poking fun at society’s most sensitive topics. \nDEREK RICHARDS\nAudiences howl at Richards’ tales about his Irish-Catholic upbringing\, divorce\, and his childfree existence. He has appeared on The Bob & Tom Show\, SiriusXM and The Weather Channel’s Top 10.

SUMMARY:OLLI presents "Bound by Creativity: How Contemporary Art is Created and Judged"
DESCRIPTION:An online talk by Professor Hannah Wohl  \nauthor of   \nBound by Creativity: How Contemporary Art Is Created and Judged \nTuesday\, March 22\, 7 pm \nOnline via Zoom. Free and Open to All. \nClick here to register online. \n  \n\n\nWhat is creativity? While our traditional view of creative work might lead us to think of artists as solitary visionaries\, the creative process is profoundly influenced by social interactions even when artists work alone. Sociologist Hannah Wohl draws on more than one hundred interviews and two years of ethnographic research in the New York contemporary art market to develop a rich sociological perspective of creativity. From inside the studio\, we see how artists experiment with new ideas and decide which works to abandon\, destroy\, put into storage\, or exhibit. Wohl then transports readers into the art world\, where we discover how artists’ understandings of their work are shaped through interactions in studio visits\, galleries\, international art fairs\, and collectors’ homes.\n \n  \nBound by Creativity reveals how artists develop conceptions of their distinctive creative visions through experimentation and social interactions. Ultimately\, we come to appreciate how judgment is integral to the creative process\, both resulting in the creation of original works while also limiting an artist’s ability to break new ground. Exploring creativity through the lens of judgment sheds new light on the production of cultural objects\, markets\, and prestige.  \n  \nHannah Wohl is a native of the Berkshires and an assistant professor of sociology at the University of California\, Santa Barbara. She received her PhD in sociology at Northwestern University and was a postdoctoral fellow at Columbia University. Her research examines judgment and decision-making in creative industries\, such as art\, literature\, technology\, and academia. Her work has been published in leading sociology journals and has won prizes from the American Sociological Association.\n \n  \n\nPre-registration is required. Click here to register online. \n\nGenerously co-sponsored by Berkshire Gas.

SUMMARY:OLLI presents "Say it Loud!" A Conversation with Harvard Law Professor Randall Kennedy
DESCRIPTION:An Online Talk with\nHarvard Law Professor Randall Kennedy \nOn his New Book \nSay It Loud!\nOn Race\, History and Culture \nWednesday\, March 30 at 7 pm EST\nOnline via Zoom/Free and Open to All \nRSVP here to receive the Zoom link \nIn his new book\, Harvard Law Professor Randall Kennedy addresses a broad range of the key racial and social justice issues of our time\, with essays on “The George Floyd Moment: Promise and Peril\,” “Isabel Wilkerson\, the Election of 2020\, and Racial Caste\,” “The Princeton Ultimatum: Anti-racism Gone Awry\,” “The Constitutional Roots of ‘Birtherism’\,” “Inequality and the Supreme Court\,” “Frederick Douglass: Everyone’s Hero\,” “Remembering Thurgood Marshall\,” “Why Clarence Thomas Ought to be Ostracized\,” “The Politics of Black Respectability\,” “Policing Racial Solidarity\,” and many others. \nIn the preface\, Professor Kennedy highlights his three sometimes-contradictory beliefs that run throughout these essays—that race continues to be a major force in America\, that there is much to be inspired by when surveying the African American journey from slavery to freedom\, and that social relations are complex and messy. Professor Kennedy writes: “I luxuriate in the messiness.  I savor the paradox and irony.  I try to share with readers my sense of surprise\, ambivalence\, and humility while seeking to understand the race line in American life.” \nProfessor Kennedy is the Michael R. Klein Professor at Harvard Law School. He clerked for Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall after attending Princeton University\, Oxford University\, and Yale Law School. He writes for scholarly and general interest publications\, and speaks regularly at venues such as The New York Historical Society.    \nProfessor Kennedy will be interviewed by Doug Mishkin\, a frequent OLLI speaker. \nFree and open to all\, but pre-registration is required.  Click here to register safely and securely online. \nGenerously co-sponsored by Berkshire Gas.

SUMMARY:Lonestar with special guests Whiskey City
DESCRIPTION:Known for merging country roots with strong melodies and rich vocals\, Lonestar has sold in excess of ten million albums. They have achieved ten #1 country hits including “No News\,” “Come Crying To Me\,” and their crossover global smash “Amazed\,” which was also #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and won an Academy of Country Music (ACM) Single of The Year. \nThe band has won many of music’s top honors\, including ACM New Vocal Group\, ACM Single and Song of the Year\, and ACM Humanitarian of the Year. They also won Country Music Association’s (CMA) Vocal Group of the Year and CMA International Artist Achievement. \nThe band’s quadruple platinum album Lonely Grill spawned four No. 1 hits\, including “Amazed\,” and established Lonestar as music’s preeminent pop-country band. Now working on a new album\, the forthcoming TEN to 1 record\, Lonestar – Dean Sams (keyboards\, acoustic guitar\, background vocals)\, Michael Britt (lead guitarist\, background vocals)\, Keech Rainwater (drums)\, and Drew Womack (lead vocals\, guitar) – are taking a fresh look at all 10 of their chart-topping country songs. With these re-recordings\, the band members were mindful of striking a balance between preserving the sonic elements fans were familiar with—and not repeating them. Fittingly\, TEN to 1 reflects the ways Lonestar’s hits have evolved over the years during the band’s rousing\, high-energy concerts. \nWith the release of TEN to 1 record\, the band members are full of gratitude for what they’ve accomplished already\, and excited about what the future holds. “It’s amazing that we’re still standing and putting on great shows after all these years\,” Sams says. “The fans are still coming out to our shows night after night\, to see us and hear our music. That’s almost 30 years of touring\, and I can’t tell you how grateful I am—and I’ve never once taken it for granted.”
