SUMMARY:Rachmaninoff and the Tsar
DESCRIPTION:Rachmaninoff and the Tsar at The Colonial Theatre\nSaturday\, May 31\, 7 pm & Sunday\, June 1\, 2 pm \nStep into the extraordinary world of Rachmaninoff and the Tsar\, a mesmerizing theatrical journey that intertwines music\, history\, and memory. This poignant play breathes life into the legendary pianist-composer Sergei Rachmaninoff (Hershey Felder) as he navigates the twilight of his life in 1940s Beverly Hills. Haunted by memories of his homeland and a fateful encounter with Russia’s last Tsar\, Nicholas II\, (Jonathan Silvestri) and the Grand Duchess Anastasia\, Rachmaninoff’s story explores themes of exile\, identity and legacy. Featuring Rachmaninoff’s most iconic compositions—his C# minor Prelude\, the Second Piano Concerto and the Paganini Variations—this production is both a tribute to his genius and a meditation on the enduring bond between an artist and his homeland. \nConceived by theatre and film artist and pianist Hershey Felder\, Rachmaninoff and the Tsar is a masterwork of storytelling and music. Felder\, renowned for his one-of-a-kind performances\, portrays Rachmaninoff with unparalleled depth and virtuosity\, earning rave reviews for his “Heartbreaking masterful performance” (San Diego Union Tribune) and “astonishing piano prowess” (HoustonPress). With visually stunning design\, evocative projections and a world-class creative team\, the play has captivated audiences from its world premiere at The Broad Stage to its acclaimed run at the Balboa Theatre and its recent record breaking run a Theatreworks Silicon Valley\, breaking the 54-year box office record previously held by Felder for his Beethoven. Don’t miss this unforgettable theatrical experience that celebrates the life and music of one of history’s greatest composers. \nRachmaninoff and the Tsar features the music of Sergei V. Rachmaninoff with a book by Hershey Felder. The production is directed by Trevor Hay. Dramaturgy by Jerry Patch. Concept design is by Hershey Felder. Lighting is by Erik S. Barry\, sound and production management is by Erik Carstensen\, sound operation by Jeremy Kalke\, projections are by Stefano Decarli\, costumes are by Marysol Gabriel\, and wigs are by Judi Lewin. \nClick here to purchase tickets! \n

Last year\, I began to take online courses to learn different techniques and fell in love with all the various styles including pop art\, abstract\, flowers and animals. I’ve learned values\, brush strokes\, layering\, and how to move paint around on the canvas. I recently retired and plan on continuing my journey to learn as much as I can to help define myself as an artist. All of my paintings are done on canvas using acyclic paint.” \n  \nThe Berkshire Art Center (BAC)\, 141 North Street\, will offer Free Drop-In Art Making on Friday\, June 6 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. \n  \nThe BAC Gallery Windows will feature the Deb Koffman Retrospective\, June through August. Celebrate the whimsical and uplifting work of Deb Koffman (1956–2021)\, a Housatonic-based artist known for her colorful\, cartoon-like drawings and thoughtful word art. View acrylic gouache works on paper by Hazle Weatherfield\, (a pseudonym adopted by artist Michael McKay)\, constructing implied fictions and creating totems from all-American suburban basement clutter. The show will be on view during the June 6 First Fridays Artswalk from 5 to 7 pm. \n  \nLiving in Recovery\, 75 North Street\, will feature artworks by Stephanie “Sesame” Campbell on Friday\, June 6\, from 5 to 8 pm\, at a reception with the artist. \n  \nStephanie “Sesame” Campbell went to Bard College on an art scholarship in the nineties based on the strength of her work as a homeless NYC street and graffiti artist. When shamed by a professor’s disdain for her lack of classical training\, she put down her brush and pivoted to more academic pursuits. \n  \nShe eventually earned multiple graduate degrees in philosophy\, education\, and public health policy\, and she now works as a national drug policy advisor and consultant for government\, health care providers\, and nonprofit organizations\, informed by her lived experience as a person in sustained recovery. \n  \nSeveral years ago\, she began her artistic recovery\, committing to an art practice after 25 years away from the canvas. After a series of master studies that built confidence and skill\, she embarked on a journey exploring light and color with her application of thousands of tiny dots.  Through her evocative works\, she has found her voice in creating captivating landscapes and symbolic representations\, impressively demonstrating the power of self-taught art. \n  \nDottie’s Coffee Lounge/Dorothy’s Estaminet\, 438/444 North Street\, will present THE INSIDE\, THE OUTSIDE and the THE ARC-EN-CIEL\, the work of three artists: Jess Fry\, Bonnie Lingoski\, and Loic Adandedjan in The Dot Gallery through June.
