SUMMARY:August First Fridays Artswalk
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy brand new indoor art shows\, murals\, and Artscape’s Pittsfield Paintboxes during the First Fridays Artswalk on Friday\, August 6\, 5 to 8 pm\, and all month long. You can view all locations at www.FirstFridaysArtswalk.com\, and new this year\, you can download the PocketSights app to follow a virtual walking tour on your cell phone. \n  \nThe Berkshire Art Association (BAA) is hosting “Everyone Is a Hero: A Comic and Cartoon Art Tribute to Our Local Heroes” at the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts\, 28 Renne Avenue\, August 6 – 28\, featuring original artwork and signed auction items created by popular Marvel\, DC\, and The Simpsons comic book artists: Luke McDonnell\, Penim Loureiro\, and Bill Morrison. \n  \nThe show is curated by BAA board member and Pittsfield resident Lawrence Klein\, founder of the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art in New York City. “I came up with a few themes\, and my idea was to ask American comic book artist Luke McDonnell and Portuguese comic book artist Penim Loureiro to create unique drawings from the same list of subjects\,” says Klein. “How do two artists from different parts of the world view the same subject matter? They took up the challenge of creating their own visions and the results are amazing.” The show also features sketches and autographed items for auction by Bill Morrison\, creative director of The Simpsons and Futurama\, and Patrick McDonnell\, creator of MUTTS. Local Berkshire artists will also show their illustration work. “The show brings together an impressive group of artists and the result is great fun\,” says BAA member Liz Bevilacqua. “You’ll see familiar heroes and heroines like Batman\, Iron Man\, and Harley Quinn in new and creative ways.” \n  \nThere will be a sneak peek of the exhibit on Friday\, August 6\, 5 to 8 pm\, during the First Fridays Artswalk\, and the opening party is Saturday\, August 7 from 3 to 6 pm. \n  \nFor the month of August\, The Marketplace Café\, 53 North Street\, will feature Finding Our Way Creations by Jess Frey. There will be an opening reception on Friday\, August 6\, 5 to 8 pm\, as part of First Fridays Artswalk. \n  \nThis series of art is an expression of the transformational process of getting lost\, finding the way\, forgetting the way\, becoming the way\, and being the way. Each painting is accompanied by a poem\, telling a story\, sharing an experience\, and connecting written word to visual art. Through the relationship between written and visual art\, Frey’s hope is to support all of us together in the continued journey of finding our way. \n  \nHotel on North\, 297 North Street\, will feature Electric Color by Jesse Tobin McCauley for the August Artswalk. There will be a reception with the artist on Friday\, August 6\, 5 to 8 pm\, as part of First Fridays Artswalk. \n  \nMcCauley’s paintings are mixed media on canvas and paper – bursts of bold\, bright\, saturated color. They evoke a feeling of happiness through the flood of interacting abstract color.\nThe Brothership Building Window at 141 North Street\, curated by IS183 Art School of the Berkshires\, will feature “Postapocalypsse and Calculation” by Rosemary Lamiacea for the month of August. \n  \nRosemary is an apprentice weaver interested in emergence\, rhythm\, and functional textiles. The textiles on view are selections from their first two years of exploring how to make new surfaces and what they can do. They were handwoven with wool\, cotton\, and linen on\, and in collaboration with\, centuries-old looms. Covering a range of familiar structures\, including plain weave\, twill\, M’s & O’s\, waffle weave\, and lace\, they try to take these techniques in new directions through juxtaposition\, color\, and construction. \n  \nThe Unitarian Universalist Church of Pittsfield\, 175 Wendell Avenue\, will feature new photographs by Linda Merry in a show entitled The Superflight Exhibit: Finch Irruption 2020 for the month of August. This exhibit highlights a mere sampling of an incredible irruption of northern finches that inundated not only New England\, but also places as far south as Alabama. \n  \nThere will be framed photographic prints on exhibit as well as a digital exhibition showcasing additional works. There will be an opening reception on Friday\, August 6\, 5 to 8 pm\, as part of First Fridays Artswalk. \n  \nArtists in the Guild of Berkshire Artists will show their work in a show entitled Plein Air in the Berkshires during the month of August at TKG Real Estate\, 137 North Street. There will be a reception as part of First Friday Artswalk on Friday\, August 6\, 5 to 8 pm. The work will be up during the month of August and can be viewed when TKG is open. Featured artists are Amy Pressman (watercolor and encaustic)\, Joan Gluck (oil)\, Rose Tannenbaum (acrylic)\, Theresa Terry (watercolor)\, and Doane Perry (photographer). \n  \nThe August Artswalk will also highlight murals downtown including: The Sun Will Rise by Jesse Tobin McCauley\, Jay Tobin and Stephanie Quetti at 443 North Street and Gaia on Melville Street by Mike Carty. Also highlighted will be all of Artscape’s Pittsfield Paintboxes. \n  \nAll art exhibits are on display in participating venues throughout the month. For more information on First Fridays Artswalk and to view a listing and map of all participating artists and locations\, visit www.FirstFridaysArtswalk.com. \n  \nThis program is supported in part by a grant from the Pittsfield Cultural Council\, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency. \n  \nFeatured image: Electric Color by Jesse Tobin McCauley on view at Hotel on North

SUMMARY:September First Fridays Artswalk
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy brand new indoor art shows\, murals\, and Artscape’s Pittsfield Paintboxes during the First Fridays Artswalk on Friday\, September 3\, 5 to 8 pm\, and all month long. You can view all locations by clicking here\, and new this year\, you can download the PocketSights app to follow a virtual walking tour on your cell phone. \n  \nThe Lichtenstein Center for the Arts\, 28 Renne Avenue\, will present THE CHASE / GRAUBARD SHOW\, September 3-25\, featuring works by married couple\, Karen Chase and Paul Graubard. \n  \nKaren Chase paints abstract paintings. Paul Graubard paints narrative\, visionary works. Their work could not be more different. This show highlights a few of their collaborations\, as well as their individual paintings. When they make collaborations\, each is free to obliterate or change what the other has done. Chase\, primarily a writer and poet\, has been painting since she was a little girl. Painting is a basic activity for her\, like cooking or washing. Graubard began to paint when he was in his sixties\, giving up his practice as a psychologist.  A number of museums collect his work. \n  \nOne of their collaborations\, Hongera Obama\, Tanzanian Congratulations\, will be silently auctioned off. The proceeds will be donated to the restoration of the Clinton AME Zion Church in Great Barrington. The silent auction is available in person at the Lichtenstein or you may contact slemme@cityofpittsfield.org for information on how to bid on the item. \n  \nThere will be an opening reception on Friday\, September 3\, 5 to 7 pm\, during First Fridays Artswalk (gallery will stay open until 8 pm). Gallery hours are Wednesday-Friday\, 11 am to 3 pm or by appointment. On Friday\, September 24 at 5:30 pm\, the public is invited to attend Collaboration: A Conversation with Karen and Paul moderated by Jayne Benjulian. This event is a part of the county-wide ArtWeek Berkshires. \n  \nNUarts\, 311 North Street\, will host an Open Studios event on Friday\, September 3\, 5 to 8 pm\, during First Fridays Artswalk. Among the artists opening for the evening are Myk Daigle\, Caroline Kelley\, Shany Porras\, Ilene Richard\, and Sally Tiska Rice. New works will be on view by over a dozen artists in NUarts’ gallery space. \n  \nMyk Daigle will be showing and selling antique and restored fountain pens. Caroline Kelley will show new abstracts as well as her “transportation paintings” – works with small antique collage illustrations of people in transit. Shany Porras will show abstract paintings that visually translate what one experiences through music influenced by Bauhaus and the American abstract painters of the 20th century. Ilene Richard will show her original acrylic paintings including “Year of the Clown”. Sally Tiska Rice will show her most recent home portraits\, and Marney Schorr will show her new series of abstract jazz paintings done with gouache on black and white paper. \n  \nHotel on North\, 297 North Street\, will feature then + now by Ellie Spangler for the September Artswalk. There will be a reception with the artist on Friday\, September 3\, 5 to 8 pm\, as part of First Fridays Artswalk. \n  \nThe Brothership Building Window at 141 North Street\, curated by IS183 Art School of the Berkshires\, will feature “More Than A Daydream” by Stacey Silkey\, September 3-25. \n  \nStacey Silkey is an abstract painter from the Berkshires who focuses on promoting empathy. Her paintings are based on hurried sketches of moving images or photographs that her consciousness has not fully processed. Recognizing the neurological aspect of storing memories and the influence images have on experience\, Stacey focuses on creating opportunities for shared meaning. Transforming incomplete memories\, her paintings bring new connections to the surface. \n  \nThe Unitarian Universalist Church of Pittsfield\, 175 Wendell Avenue\, will present Number One Job\, a show by Erica Manville and Melissa Quirk for the month of September. There will be an opening reception with live performance poetry on Friday\, September 3\, 5 to 8 pm\, as part of First Fridays Artswalk. \n  \nBecoming a mother is a magical transition that transforms one in body\, mind\, and soul. In Number One Job\, artists Erica Manville (visual artist) and Melissa Quirk (poet) explore early days of motherhood through dimensions of poetry and visual art. \n  \nThe Unitarian Universalist Church will host a second artist reception for Number One Job with live performance poetry on Friday\, September 17 at 7 pm as part of ArtWeek Berkshires. \n  \nArtists in the Guild of Berkshire Artists will show their work in a show entitled Plein Air in the Berkshires during the month of September at TKG Real Estate\, 137 North Street. There will be a reception as part of First Friday Artswalk on Friday\, September 3\, 5 to 8 pm. The work will be up during the month of September and can be viewed when TKG is open. Featured artists are Carolyn Abrams (mixed media and cold wax)\, Susan Sabino (photography)\, Arthur Djang (watercolor)\, and Ellen Jacobson (oil\, watercolor and acrylic). \n  \nThe September Artswalk will also highlight murals downtown including: The Sun Will Rise by Jesse Tobin McCauley\, Jay Tobin and Stephanie Quetti at 443 North Street and Gaia on Melville Street by Mike Carty. Also highlighted will be all of Artscape’s Pittsfield Paintboxes. \n  \nAll art exhibits are on display in participating venues throughout the month. \n  \nThis program is supported in part by a grant from the Pittsfield Cultural Council\, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency.

SUMMARY:Lecture and Film Screening: Professor Michael Hoberman and the film “Call Us Ishmael\,” directed by Dr. David Shaerf
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, September 5\, 3 to 6 pm \nMichael Hoberman\, an American literature professor at Fitchburg State University\, will make his case that Melville is an ideal writer for people who describe themselves as skeptical romantics. His talk highlights his own path to Melville’s writing\, and it will also offer a brief discussion of how he teaches two lesser-known texts (“Benito Cereno” and “The Encantadas”). Call Us Ishmael chronicles filmmaker David Shaerf’s journey into the world of Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. Throughout his quest he encounters artists\, musicians\, professors\, and performers\, all of whom are singularly seeking the white whale. Call Us Ishmael gives viewers an insight into a community devoted to this timeless text. \n$15 BCHS members\, $20 not-yet-members
