Kelly Potter\, Chesterwood Artist-in-Residence\, is a painter and a ceramic sculptor based in the Berkshires. Her visual art is based on preliminary studies of plant and animal activity within semi-natural locations in the Berkshires and the Pioneer Valley. Using oil painting and wall mounted ceramic relief sculpture\, she investigates a dynamic between the tamed and the untamed. \n  \nNoah Beauregard\, Red Lion Inn Artist-in-Residence\, is a painter working out of Berkshire County. Drawn to painting and design as a child\, Beauregard’s art focuses on abstracting common images through form and color. Intrinsically inspired by Mother Nature’s glory and equally as moved by the magic of capturing moments photographically\, it was only in a matter of time that her creative\, unrefined edge would merge with alluring images. \n  \nThe Marketplace Cafe\, 53 North Street\, will host paintings by Mary Davidson for the month of September. There will be a reception with the artist during the September 1 First Fridays Artswalk from 5 to 7 pm. \n  \nMary is a painter living in South Egremont\, MA. Her New Hat Series presents large-scale\, feminine forms that are mysterious\, bold\, dramatic\, captivating\, and complex. The many elegant\, amorphic\, and intricate shapes which flow throughout keep the eyes moving. \n  \nMarchetti Headquarters\, at 314 North Street\, will feature Strike a Memory: Imagery & Illustration in Berkshire Matchbooks\, an art exhibit of vintage Berkshire matchbooks dating from the 1950s-1980s for the month of September. \n  \nThe exhibit is curated by local artist Sara Paul of Shire Prints and features vintage matchbooks with famous landmarks in Lenox\, Pittsfield\, Great Barrington\, and other Berkshire towns. The matchbooks have been scanned at a high resolution and printed many times greater than their size so that viewers can get an up-close look at matchbook art in its full color\, detail\, and splendor. \n  \nVisitors can meet Sara at a reception on Friday\, September 1 from 5 to 7 pm at Marchetti Headquarters. \n  \nWitch Slapped\, 78 North Street\, will feature The Fantastical Artwork of Kit Curry on Friday\, September 1\, 5 to 8 pm. \n  \nKit Curry’s serenely apocalyptic artwork draws upon those primordial beliefs — animism\, witchcraft\, the occult —that modernity and so-called enlightenment have failed to entirely exorcise. Combining graphite\, charcoal\, and pastel for a wide tonal range\, Kit creates figurative and illustrative black and white chiaroscuro drawings in which witches and goblins dance amidst a crumbling world. Kit Curry’s artwork serves as a reminder of the mystery\, terror\, and delight of the strange world we inhabit. \n  \nHotel on North\, 297 North Street\, will feature When Soft Particles Soften: Abstract work by Justin Carafotes & Ryan Garvey through September 30. Soft Particles was first presented at His Daughter Paloma Gallery in August of 2022 curated by Justin Carafotes. This is the gallery’s first traveling exhibition. \n  \nDownload the Downtown Pittsfield app in the App Store or on Google Play to follow a virtual walking tour of art on your cell phone. \n  \nFirst Fridays Artswalk is supported in part by a grant from the Mass Cultural Council\, and a grant from the Pittsfield Cultural Council\, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency. \n  \nThis program is also supported in part by The Feigenbaum Foundation as well as a grant awarded by Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation’s Arts Build Community initiative with funding from the Barr Foundation. \n  \nFor more information on First Fridays Artswalk\, visit firstfridaysartswalk.com or call Downtown Pittsfield\, Inc. at 413-443-6501. I feel that our souls\, our beginnings and our endings\, lie low in our bodies as the soil that helps sustain us lies low on the earth. \n  \nThese paintings are a representation of what I see when I look directly down at soil. The paintings are multi-layered\, complex and earthy in tones. I want to capture the movement\, depth and complexity of soil in these paintings. I am lucky enough to know two extraordinarily beautiful farms that serve as the inspiration for these Soil Paintings: Spring Hills Farm in Dalton\, PA and Woven Roots Farm in Tyringham\, MA. Both are working organic farms that place high importance on the health and beauty of soil. “ \n  \nThe Berkshire Art Center (BAC)\, 141 North Street\, will continue to offer Free Artmaking Drop-Ins on the First Friday of the month from 5:30 to 7:30 pm\, year-round. For the month of October\, The Berkshire Art Center will also feature two window displays: Feathered Friends by Paula Churt (north window) and Turn the Tables by Deborah Carter (south window). \n  \nThe exhibit in the north window\, “Feathered Friends”\, represents a collective array of paper owls and backyard birds familiar to the Berkshires. Paula’s creative vision is inspired by nature and natural found objects. Each bird is uniquely designed and precisely cut using scissors and an exacto knife. “Feathered Friends” will be on view October 6 through October 31. \n  \nDeborah Carter is back in the south window of Berkshire Art Center with an installation created with upcycled vintage napkins and tablecloths. “Turn the Tables” by Deborah Carter will be on view October 6 through November 26. \n  \nOn Friday\, October 6\, 5 to 8 pm\, NUarts gallery + studios\, 311 North Street\, will open their Hall Gallery featuring the works of resident artists including Richard Britell\, Kathy Gideon\, Brent Ridge\, Joan Rooks\, Marney Schorr\, and Laura Thompson. \n  \nSally Tiska Rice will present “Autumn Reverie” at Krol Headquarters\, 139 North Street\, on October 6. Sally invites you to indulge your senses in the vibrant colors and intricate brushstrokes of abstract canvases and framed translucent watercolor works. There will be a reception with the artist on Friday\, October 6\, 5 to 8 pm\, during the First Fridays Artswalk. \n  \nAs a versatile multi-media artist\, Sally Tiska Rice seamlessly employs a tapestry of techniques\, working in acrylic\, watercolors\, oil paints\, pastels\, and collages containing botanicals and mixed media elements. Her creative spirit draws inspiration from the idyllic surroundings of her rural hometown\, where she resides with her husband Mark and cherished pets. \n  \nThe Marketplace Cafe\, 53 North Street\, will host watercolor paintings by Jill Gustavis for the month of October. There will be a reception with the artist during the October 6th First Fridays Artswalk from 5 to 7 pm. \n  \nJill Gustavis is a painter living in Hancock\, MA. A Berkshire native\, Jill is inspired by a wide range of local subjects\, from still lifes and florals to landscapes and animals. Working primarily in watercolor\, Jill uses layers of color and value to sculpt a sense of presence between the subject and viewer. \n  \nMarchetti Headquarters\, at 314 North Street\, will feature Mollie Kellogg’s Incognito Witches for the month of October. “Tis the season for witches!” Experience hidden magick revealed in Mollie Kellogg’s Incognito Witch paintings and drawings during the First Fridays Artswalk and all month long. Visitors can meet Mollie at a reception on Friday\, October 6 from 5 to 7 pm at Marchetti Headquarters. \n  \nAerofauna Studio presents The P.E.B.E. Project with the artistic stylings of Natalie Zoe White at The Unitarian Universalist Church of Pittsfield\, 175 Wendell Avenue\, through October 23. She uses acrylic on canvas to make her art. \n  \nBMC will host a reception with the artist on Friday\, October 6 from 3 to 5 pm with snacks and soft drinks. \n  \nWitch Slapped\, 78 North Street\, will feature The Fantastical Artwork of Kit Curry on Friday\, October 6\, 5 to 8 pm. \n  \n  \nFeatured images in header: (Left to right) Jill Gustavis and Marina Dominguez \n  \n  \nEvent Highlights (South to North): \n  \nUnitarian Universalist Church of Pittsfield\, 175 Wendell Avenue \nAerofauna Studio presents The P.E.B.E. For the month of November\, The Berkshire Art Center will also feature two window displays: Landscapes\, Seascapes\, Skyscapes – curated by Matt Brinton (north window) and Turn the Tables by Deborah Carter (south window). \n  \nOn Friday\, November 3\, 5 to 8 pm\, NUarts gallery + studios\, 311 North Street\, will open their Hall Gallery featuring the works of resident artists including Richard Britell\, Kathy Gideon\, Brent Ridge\, Joan Rooks\, Marney Schorr\, and Laura Thompson. \n  \nMatthew Brinton will present “Illustrations from a Bygone Era” at Krol Headquarters\, 139 North Street\, for the month of November. Her mediums are acrylic\, gouache\, pencil\, and digital. \n  \nMarchetti Headquarters\, at 314 North Street\, will feature Mollie Kellogg’s Incognito Witches on November 3. Experience hidden magick revealed in Mollie Kellogg’s Incognito Witch paintings and drawings during the First Fridays Artswalk and meet Mollie at a reception on Friday\, November 3 from 5 to 7 pm at Marchetti Headquarters. Working in opposing disciplines of analog photography\, sculpture\, and illustration\, the pair is now merging their solo artistic practices and speaking with one voice of creative experimentation. Inspired by each other\, “Darling\, Darling” takes a bold new step in the expression of queer love. \n  \nBerkshire Medical Center will present “JOY” – a collaborative exhibit featuring the joyful works of staff and friends of BMC’s Clinical Ancillary Services Division. Participating artists will share examples of what brings them JOY through a variety of mediums. \n  \n“JOY” will be on view in BMC’s Main Lobby at 725 North Street November 1 through November 30; and there will be two receptions on Friday\, November 3: 12 to 1 pm and 3 to 5 pm. \n  \nHotel on North\, 297 North Street\, will feature Soil Paintings by Sarah Horne through November 29. \n  \n“This exhibit is about the mixture of organic matter\, minerals\, gases\, and liquids—the alchemy that makes soil\,” says Sarah. “Soil is elemental to the environment that keeps me alive: soil and its nutrients are fundamental to growing and literally the earth beneath my feet. “ \n  \nDownload the Downtown Pittsfield app in the App Store or on Google Play to follow a virtual walking tour of art on your cell phone. \n  \nEvent Highlights (South to North): \n  \nUnitarian Universalist Church of Pittsfield\, 175 Wendell Avenue \n“Darling\, Darling” by Falcon Laina and Cassidy Clark \nReception: Friday\, November 3\, 5 to 7 pm \n  \nArtists at the Clock Tower\, 75 South Church Street\, Third Floor \nDeborah H. There will be an opening reception with the artist on Friday\, December 1\, 5 to 8 pm\, during the First Fridays Artswalk. \n  \nFor her show\, Go Big Where Expanding\, Kara delves into a question that she has been exploring for some time. The inspiration stems from the colloquial idiom\, “Go big or go home!” While the saying may inspire or trigger a number of reactions\, it is a trite phrase that led to a profoundly deep question… Where in life do we want to give our all? Ultimately\, “going big” transcends mere scale; it embodies a personal choice for wholehearted dedication. From her own quest\, Kara determined\, “Hope is a state of mind. Love is a state of being. Passion is a state of action. And for me\, going all in on all three of these can create a beautiful life.” \n  \nKara has expanded her contemplation into a community-driven exploration\, encouraging viewers to reflect on where they want to focus their energy or make meaningful impact in their lives. Some paintings in this show were inspired by anonymous submissions collected from the people of Berkshire County\, MA during her previous “Go Big Where” show in 2022. \n  \nThe Marketplace Cafe\, 53 North Street\, will present Nature Photography by Susan Lynch Smith for the month of December. There will be an opening reception with the artist during the December 1 First Fridays Artswalk from 5 to 7 pm. \n  \nPhotographer Susan Lynch Smith captures dramatic\, fleeting moments in nature – always searching for a point in time that catches the breath and steals the heart. Susan’s work will remain on display through the end of December. \n  \nThe Unitarian Universalist Church of Pittsfield\, 175 Wendell Avenue\, will present an experiment with canine artists: Can Dogs Paint? December 1- 24. There will be an opening reception and silent auction on Friday\, December 1\, 5 to 7 pm\, as part of the First Fridays Artswalk. \n  \nInspired by a notable rescue dog in Connecticut\, “Rembrandt” who has become known for his ability to create abstract art\, the Unitarian Universalist Church has gathered a group of local pooches to see if they\, too\, could create unique and interesting paintings. This experiment is intended as a fun way to bring dogs and their owners together\, and to play with a new way of looking at color and form. The pups’ paintings will be offered for sale via a Silent Auction to benefit the Unitarian Universalist Church. \n  \nTKG Real Estate\, 137 North Street\, will present “Landscape: Real and Imagined” by David Dew Bruner for the month of December. There will be an opening reception with the artist on Friday\, December 1\, 4 to 6 pm. \n  \n“As an artist and landscape architect I look at the world around me and synthesize it\,” says Bruner. “My goal is to interpret\, define and reimagine the environment. In this selection of art\, I have chosen from several series to emphasize the range of imagery. They all attempt to give the viewer a new perspective on the subject.” \n  \nThe Beacon Cinema Lobby\, at 57 North Street\, will present a show by the Clock Tower Artists curated by the visionary artist Dr. Mark Mellinger. This exhibition promises to be an extraordinary journey through diverse artistic expressions\, inviting you to explore the intricate tapestry of the human spirit. Mark Mellinger seamlessly weaves a lifetime of experience\, practicing art for six decades and psychoanalysis for four\, into a compelling exploration of the unspoken\, the ineffable\, and the sensual world of materials through his paintings\, collages\, and intricate wood and iron constructions. \n  \nFeatured artists in this exhibition are Deborah H. Carter\, Marion H. Grant\, Caroline Kelley\, Bruce Laird\, Mark Mellinger\, Linda Petrocine\, Sally Tiska Rice\, and Audrey Shachnow. \n  \nFor more information on First Fridays Artswalk\, visit www.firstfridaysartswalk.com or call Downtown Pittsfield\, Inc. at 413-443-6501. \n  \nEvent Highlights (South to North): \n  \nUnitarian Universalist Church of Pittsfield\, 175 Wendell Avenue \nAn experiment with canine artists: Can Dogs Paint? \nOpening Reception: Friday\, December 1\, 5 to 7 pm \n  \nArtists at the Clock Tower\, 75 South Church Street\, Third Floor \nDeborah H.
