SUMMARY:USAF Heritage Brass
DESCRIPTION:The United States Air Force Heritage of America Band has a rich history of inspiring hearts and minds\, building and sustaining American patriotism and enhancing esprit de corps in the United States Air Force. It was one of the original Army Air Corps bands\, created by order of the Secretary of War on October 1\, 1941 and assigned to Barksdale Field\, Louisiana. In June 1946\, after a short stay at Brooks Field\, Texas\, the band arrived at Langley Field\, now Joint Base Langley-Eustis\, VA\, its current home. \nFor over 75 years\, the band has represented the Air Force with musical and military distinction. Members bring music to the mid-Atlantic in live concerts and to the nation in televised events such as The Today Show and the DESERT STORM National Victory Parade and presidential inaugural events. The Heritage of America Band has performed ceremonies for U.S presidents and foreign heads of state\, including the Queen of England and the President of France. Using today’s technology\, the band reaches a world wide audience through its website\, social media and audio recordings. Additionally\, the band travels more than 150\,000 miles to perform hundreds of concerts for listeners across a fifteen-state region from Maine to South Carolina. \nIn recent years\, the mission of Air Force Bands has become an expeditionary one. The Blue Aces were among the first groups to tour Southwest Asia and the Horn of Africa to support coalition and Joint forces serving in the Global War on Terrorism. \nThe USAF Heritage of America Band’s exceptional musicianship has earned international critical acclaim and numerous honors: eight Air Force Outstanding Unit Awards\, five Air Force Organizational Excellence Awards\, four Colonel George S. Howard Citations of Musical Excellence for Military Concert Band\, North Carolina’s Order of the Long Leaf Pine\, and countless state and municipal proclamations. The USAF Heritage of America Band remains at the forefront of preserving and enriching America’s musical heritage in the 21st century.

SUMMARY:The Irish Comedy Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Irish Comedy Tour is a fast-paced\, raucous ride across America with four joke-slinging entertainers who know how to party and have a great night. This high energy show takes the party atmosphere of a Dublin pub and combines it with a boisterous\, belly-laugh band of hooligans. The comedians\, whose ancestors hail from the Emerald Isle\, include Detroit native Derek Richards; Boston-born Mike McCarthy; Nova Scotia’s Damon Leibert; and from Inchicore\, a suburb of Dublin\, Ireland’s Derrick Keane. Don’t miss these hilarious Irish-American comedians as they tear apart\, as well as validate\, all of the Irish myths and stereotypes. \nDERRICK KEANE\nOriginally from Inchicore\, Derrick first distinguished himself musically when the duo in which he sang and played swept The All Ireland Talent Show. His band\, Inchicore\, sets the gold standard for the Irish music scene in New England and across North America. He’s shared the stage with greats such as Willie Nelson\, The Wolfe Tones\, The Furey Brothers and The Dublin City Ramblers. \nDAMON LEIBERT\nDamon Leibert’s unique and energetic style of fiddle playing lies somewhere between the driving dance beat of Cape Breton and the lyrical music of Ireland. He has performed innumerable concerts and festivals across North America and Europe\, and has worked in various theater\, film and recording projects. \nMIKE McCARTHY\nMike McCarthy’s no-holds-barred humor has landed him on Comedy Central and Showtime. The “comedy barbarian\,” as he calls himself\, takes no prisoners when it comes to poking fun at society’s most sensitive topics. \nDEREK RICHARDS\nAudiences howl at Richards’ tales about his Irish-Catholic upbringing\, divorce\, and his childfree existence. He has appeared on The Bob & Tom Show\, SiriusXM and The Weather Channel’s Top 10.

SUMMARY:OLLI presents "Bound by Creativity: How Contemporary Art is Created and Judged"
DESCRIPTION:An online talk by Professor Hannah Wohl  \nauthor of   \nBound by Creativity: How Contemporary Art Is Created and Judged \nTuesday\, March 22\, 7 pm \nOnline via Zoom. Free and Open to All. \nClick here to register online. \n  \n\n\nWhat is creativity? While our traditional view of creative work might lead us to think of artists as solitary visionaries\, the creative process is profoundly influenced by social interactions even when artists work alone. Sociologist Hannah Wohl draws on more than one hundred interviews and two years of ethnographic research in the New York contemporary art market to develop a rich sociological perspective of creativity. From inside the studio\, we see how artists experiment with new ideas and decide which works to abandon\, destroy\, put into storage\, or exhibit. Wohl then transports readers into the art world\, where we discover how artists’ understandings of their work are shaped through interactions in studio visits\, galleries\, international art fairs\, and collectors’ homes.\n \n  \nBound by Creativity reveals how artists develop conceptions of their distinctive creative visions through experimentation and social interactions. Ultimately\, we come to appreciate how judgment is integral to the creative process\, both resulting in the creation of original works while also limiting an artist’s ability to break new ground. Exploring creativity through the lens of judgment sheds new light on the production of cultural objects\, markets\, and prestige.  \n  \nHannah Wohl is a native of the Berkshires and an assistant professor of sociology at the University of California\, Santa Barbara. She received her PhD in sociology at Northwestern University and was a postdoctoral fellow at Columbia University. Her research examines judgment and decision-making in creative industries\, such as art\, literature\, technology\, and academia. Her work has been published in leading sociology journals and has won prizes from the American Sociological Association.\n \n  \n\nPre-registration is required. Click here to register online. \n\nGenerously co-sponsored by Berkshire Gas.

SUMMARY:OLLI presents "Say it Loud!" A Conversation with Harvard Law Professor Randall Kennedy
DESCRIPTION:An Online Talk with\nHarvard Law Professor Randall Kennedy \nOn his New Book \nSay It Loud!\nOn Race\, History and Culture \nWednesday\, March 30 at 7 pm EST\nOnline via Zoom/Free and Open to All \nRSVP here to receive the Zoom link \nIn his new book\, Harvard Law Professor Randall Kennedy addresses a broad range of the key racial and social justice issues of our time\, with essays on “The George Floyd Moment: Promise and Peril\,” “Isabel Wilkerson\, the Election of 2020\, and Racial Caste\,” “The Princeton Ultimatum: Anti-racism Gone Awry\,” “The Constitutional Roots of ‘Birtherism’\,” “Inequality and the Supreme Court\,” “Frederick Douglass: Everyone’s Hero\,” “Remembering Thurgood Marshall\,” “Why Clarence Thomas Ought to be Ostracized\,” “The Politics of Black Respectability\,” “Policing Racial Solidarity\,” and many others. \nIn the preface\, Professor Kennedy highlights his three sometimes-contradictory beliefs that run throughout these essays—that race continues to be a major force in America\, that there is much to be inspired by when surveying the African American journey from slavery to freedom\, and that social relations are complex and messy. Professor Kennedy writes: “I luxuriate in the messiness.  I savor the paradox and irony.  I try to share with readers my sense of surprise\, ambivalence\, and humility while seeking to understand the race line in American life.” \nProfessor Kennedy is the Michael R. Klein Professor at Harvard Law School. He clerked for Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall after attending Princeton University\, Oxford University\, and Yale Law School. He writes for scholarly and general interest publications\, and speaks regularly at venues such as The New York Historical Society.    \nProfessor Kennedy will be interviewed by Doug Mishkin\, a frequent OLLI speaker. \nFree and open to all\, but pre-registration is required.  Click here to register safely and securely online. \nGenerously co-sponsored by Berkshire Gas.
