There will be an opening reception with the artist on Friday\, December 1\, 5 to 8 pm\, during the First Fridays Artswalk. \n  \nFor her show\, Go Big Where Expanding\, Kara delves into a question that she has been exploring for some time. The inspiration stems from the colloquial idiom\, “Go big or go home!” While the saying may inspire or trigger a number of reactions\, it is a trite phrase that led to a profoundly deep question… Where in life do we want to give our all? Ultimately\, “going big” transcends mere scale; it embodies a personal choice for wholehearted dedication. From her own quest\, Kara determined\, “Hope is a state of mind. Love is a state of being. Passion is a state of action. And for me\, going all in on all three of these can create a beautiful life.” \n  \nKara has expanded her contemplation into a community-driven exploration\, encouraging viewers to reflect on where they want to focus their energy or make meaningful impact in their lives. Some paintings in this show were inspired by anonymous submissions collected from the people of Berkshire County\, MA during her previous “Go Big Where” show in 2022. \n  \nThe Marketplace Cafe\, 53 North Street\, will present Nature Photography by Susan Lynch Smith for the month of December. There will be an opening reception with the artist during the December 1 First Fridays Artswalk from 5 to 7 pm. \n  \nPhotographer Susan Lynch Smith captures dramatic\, fleeting moments in nature – always searching for a point in time that catches the breath and steals the heart. Susan’s work will remain on display through the end of December. \n  \nThe Unitarian Universalist Church of Pittsfield\, 175 Wendell Avenue\, will present an experiment with canine artists: Can Dogs Paint? December 1- 24. There will be an opening reception and silent auction on Friday\, December 1\, 5 to 7 pm\, as part of the First Fridays Artswalk. \n  \nInspired by a notable rescue dog in Connecticut\, “Rembrandt” who has become known for his ability to create abstract art\, the Unitarian Universalist Church has gathered a group of local pooches to see if they\, too\, could create unique and interesting paintings. This experiment is intended as a fun way to bring dogs and their owners together\, and to play with a new way of looking at color and form. The pups’ paintings will be offered for sale via a Silent Auction to benefit the Unitarian Universalist Church. \n  \nTKG Real Estate\, 137 North Street\, will present “Landscape: Real and Imagined” by David Dew Bruner for the month of December. There will be an opening reception with the artist on Friday\, December 1\, 4 to 6 pm. \n  \n“As an artist and landscape architect I look at the world around me and synthesize it\,” says Bruner. “My goal is to interpret\, define and reimagine the environment. In this selection of art\, I have chosen from several series to emphasize the range of imagery. They all attempt to give the viewer a new perspective on the subject.” \n  \nThe Beacon Cinema Lobby\, at 57 North Street\, will present a show by the Clock Tower Artists curated by the visionary artist Dr. Mark Mellinger. This exhibition promises to be an extraordinary journey through diverse artistic expressions\, inviting you to explore the intricate tapestry of the human spirit. Mark Mellinger seamlessly weaves a lifetime of experience\, practicing art for six decades and psychoanalysis for four\, into a compelling exploration of the unspoken\, the ineffable\, and the sensual world of materials through his paintings\, collages\, and intricate wood and iron constructions. \n  \nFeatured artists in this exhibition are Deborah H. Carter\, Marion H. Grant\, Caroline Kelley\, Bruce Laird\, Mark Mellinger\, Linda Petrocine\, Sally Tiska Rice\, and Audrey Shachnow. \n  \nDownload the Downtown Pittsfield app in the App Store or on Google Play to follow a virtual walking tour of art on your cell phone. \n  \nFirst Fridays Artswalk is supported in part by a grant from the Mass Cultural Council\, and a grant from the Pittsfield Cultural Council\, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency. \n  \nThis program is also supported in part by The Feigenbaum Foundation as well as a grant awarded by Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation’s Arts Build Community initiative with funding from the Barr Foundation. \n  \nFor more information on First Fridays Artswalk\, visit www.firstfridaysartswalk.com or call Downtown Pittsfield\, Inc. at 413-443-6501. \n  \nEvent Highlights (South to North): \n  \nUnitarian Universalist Church of Pittsfield\, 175 Wendell Avenue \nAn experiment with canine artists: Can Dogs Paint? \nOpening Reception: Friday\, December 1\, 5 to 7 pm \n  \nArtists at the Clock Tower\, 75 South Church Street\, Third Floor \nDeborah H. Her concerts are warm\, affirming experiences she shares with the audience. Let her take you on a journey of musical exploration through the Delta and Piedmont regions of the South. She is The Artist Associate in Songwriting at Williams College (Williamstown\, MA) and founding faculty at Schreiner University’s Songkeeper Program (Kerrville\, TX). She has released seven CDs of her original music and is currently signed to Houston’s Berkalin Records. \n  \nOn Friday\, August 4 at FRAMEWORK\, 437 North Street\, Diane Firtell will be hosting a free live painting demonstration from 5 to 8 pm where she will illustrate how she transfers one of her photographs onto a canvas and transforms it into a realistic oil painting. \n  \nPittsfield artist Diane Firtell uses her camera\, now mostly her iPhone\, to capture the ever-changing beauty of the Berkshires. During this event\, she will be working on Ranunculus Bouquet\, a work in progress. \n  \nDowntown Pittsfield\, Inc. and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church will host a Free Kids’ Paint & Sip on Friday\, August 4\, 5 to 7 pm\, in the auditorium at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church\, 67 East Street\, as part of the First Fridays Artswalk. \n  \nThis free animal-themed Paint & Sip is best suited for ages 5 to 12\, although younger and older children are welcome. Combining graphite\, charcoal\, and pastel for a wide tonal range\, Kit creates figurative and illustrative black and white chiaroscuro drawings in which witches and goblins dance amidst a crumbling world. SUMMARY:September First Fridays Artswalk
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy brand new indoor art shows\, murals\, and Artscape’s Pittsfield Paintboxes during the First Fridays Artswalk on Friday\, September 3\, 5 to 8 pm\, and all month long. You can view all locations by clicking here\, and new this year\, you can download the PocketSights app to follow a virtual walking tour on your cell phone. \n  \nThe Lichtenstein Center for the Arts\, 28 Renne Avenue\, will present THE CHASE / GRAUBARD SHOW\, September 3-25\, featuring works by married couple\, Karen Chase and Paul Graubard. \n  \nKaren Chase paints abstract paintings. Paul Graubard paints narrative\, visionary works. Their work could not be more different. This show highlights a few of their collaborations\, as well as their individual paintings. When they make collaborations\, each is free to obliterate or change what the other has done. Chase\, primarily a writer and poet\, has been painting since she was a little girl. Painting is a basic activity for her\, like cooking or washing. Graubard began to paint when he was in his sixties\, giving up his practice as a psychologist.  A number of museums collect his work. \n  \nOne of their collaborations\, Hongera Obama\, Tanzanian Congratulations\, will be silently auctioned off. The proceeds will be donated to the restoration of the Clinton AME Zion Church in Great Barrington. The silent auction is available in person at the Lichtenstein or you may contact slemme@cityofpittsfield.org for information on how to bid on the item. \n  \nThere will be an opening reception on Friday\, September 3\, 5 to 7 pm\, during First Fridays Artswalk (gallery will stay open until 8 pm). Gallery hours are Wednesday-Friday\, 11 am to 3 pm or by appointment. On Friday\, September 24 at 5:30 pm\, the public is invited to attend Collaboration: A Conversation with Karen and Paul moderated by Jayne Benjulian. This event is a part of the county-wide ArtWeek Berkshires. \n  \nNUarts\, 311 North Street\, will host an Open Studios event on Friday\, September 3\, 5 to 8 pm\, during First Fridays Artswalk. Her paintings are based on hurried sketches of moving images or photographs that her consciousness has not fully processed. Recognizing the neurological aspect of storing memories and the influence images have on experience\, Stacey focuses on creating opportunities for shared meaning. Transforming incomplete memories\, her paintings bring new connections to the surface. \n  \nThe Unitarian Universalist Church of Pittsfield\, 175 Wendell Avenue\, will present Number One Job\, a show by Erica Manville and Melissa Quirk for the month of September.
