You can view all locations at www.FirstFridaysArtswalk.com\, and new this year\, you can download the PocketSights app to follow a virtual walking tour on your cell phone. \n  \nThe Berkshire Art Association (BAA) is hosting “Everyone Is a Hero: A Comic and Cartoon Art Tribute to Our Local Heroes” at the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts\, 28 Renne Avenue\, August 6 – 28\, featuring original artwork and signed auction items created by popular Marvel\, DC\, and The Simpsons comic book artists: Luke McDonnell\, Penim Loureiro\, and Bill Morrison. \n  \nThe show is curated by BAA board member and Pittsfield resident Lawrence Klein\, founder of the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art in New York City. “I came up with a few themes\, and my idea was to ask American comic book artist Luke McDonnell and Portuguese comic book artist Penim Loureiro to create unique drawings from the same list of subjects\,” says Klein. “How do two artists from different parts of the world view the same subject matter? They took up the challenge of creating their own visions and the results are amazing.” The show also features sketches and autographed items for auction by Bill Morrison\, creative director of The Simpsons and Futurama\, and Patrick McDonnell\, creator of MUTTS. Local Berkshire artists will also show their illustration work. “The show brings together an impressive group of artists and the result is great fun\,” says BAA member Liz Bevilacqua. “You’ll see familiar heroes and heroines like Batman\, Iron Man\, and Harley Quinn in new and creative ways.” \n  \nThere will be a sneak peek of the exhibit on Friday\, August 6\, 5 to 8 pm\, during the First Fridays Artswalk\, and the opening party is Saturday\, August 7 from 3 to 6 pm. \n  \nFor the month of August\, The Marketplace Café\, 53 North Street\, will feature Finding Our Way Creations by Jess Frey. There will be an opening reception on Friday\, August 6\, 5 to 8 pm\, as part of First Fridays Artswalk. \n  \nThis series of art is an expression of the transformational process of getting lost\, finding the way\, forgetting the way\, becoming the way\, and being the way. Each painting is accompanied by a poem\, telling a story\, sharing an experience\, and connecting written word to visual art. Through the relationship between written and visual art\, Frey’s hope is to support all of us together in the continued journey of finding our way. \n  \nHotel on North\, 297 North Street\, will feature Electric Color by Jesse Tobin McCauley for the August Artswalk. There will be a reception with the artist on Friday\, August 6\, 5 to 8 pm\, as part of First Fridays Artswalk. \n  \nMcCauley’s paintings are mixed media on canvas and paper – bursts of bold\, bright\, saturated color. They evoke a feeling of happiness through the flood of interacting abstract color.\nThe Brothership Building Window at 141 North Street\, curated by IS183 Art School of the Berkshires\, will feature “Postapocalypsse and Calculation” by Rosemary Lamiacea for the month of August. \n  \nRosemary is an apprentice weaver interested in emergence\, rhythm\, and functional textiles. The textiles on view are selections from their first two years of exploring how to make new surfaces and what they can do. They were handwoven with wool\, cotton\, and linen on\, and in collaboration with\, centuries-old looms. Covering a range of familiar structures\, including plain weave\, twill\, M’s & O’s\, waffle weave\, and lace\, they try to take these techniques in new directions through juxtaposition\, color\, and construction. \n  \nThe Unitarian Universalist Church of Pittsfield\, 175 Wendell Avenue\, will feature new photographs by Linda Merry in a show entitled The Superflight Exhibit: Finch Irruption 2020 for the month of August. This exhibit highlights a mere sampling of an incredible irruption of northern finches that inundated not only New England\, but also places as far south as Alabama. \n  \nThere will be framed photographic prints on exhibit as well as a digital exhibition showcasing additional works. There will be an opening reception on Friday\, August 6\, 5 to 8 pm\, as part of First Fridays Artswalk. \n  \nArtists in the Guild of Berkshire Artists will show their work in a show entitled Plein Air in the Berkshires during the month of August at TKG Real Estate\, 137 North Street. There will be a reception as part of First Friday Artswalk on Friday\, August 6\, 5 to 8 pm. The work will be up during the month of August and can be viewed when TKG is open. DESCRIPTION:For the month of November\, First Fridays Artswalk will present the last Artswalk of 2020 which will encompass a variety of outdoor locations perfect for a social distanced walk around the downtown\, as well as 4 indoor locations. \nEnjoy indoor and storefront art shows\, murals\, outdoor sculpture\, and 19 of Artscape’s Pittsfield Paintboxes during the First Fridays Artswalk on Friday\, November 6\, 5 to 8 pm\, and all month long. When participating in the November Artswalk\, be sure to maintain a physical distance of 6 feet from other individuals and wear your mask. A map of all indoor and outdoor locations\, including hours for the indoor shows\, can be viewed at www.FirstFridaysArtswalk.com. \n  \nThe Marketplace Café\, 53 North Street\, will feature works by Kathryn L. Jensen. Jensen is an artist working in watercolor who has lived and painted the landscapes of Western MA since 2001. She enjoys the medium of watercolor for its interplay of control and spontaneity. These artists were asked to broaden and explore the questions: Where do we go next? What do we do next? What comes next?\, and respond with unique artistic expression. The exhibit is open to the public with no appointment necessary during the First Fridays Artswalk on November 6\, 5 to 8 pm\, and persons admitted will be limited to 10 at a time. To view NEXT at an alternate time\, please call 413-499-9348 to make an appointment. \n  \nThe Brothership Building Window\, 141 North Street\, curated by IS183 Art School of the Berkshires will feature Collage Trees by Mrs. Callahan’s 5th Grade Egremont Elementary Class for the month of November. \n  \nBRAINworks educator Judy Callahan (grade 5\, Pittsfield)\, in partnership with IS183 Art School of the Berkshires\, brought science and social-emotional learning into her virtual 5th grade classroom this month through the power of collage! Over the last two weeks in four virtual classes with IS183\, students have learned about collage\, trees\, and frottage: a colorful texture-rubbing visual art technique. Judy and IS183 educators Lucie and Brielle designed the lesson to incorporate both science and SEL standards. Students examined the natural characteristics of a tree (for example\, its bark and how it protects the tree) and drew connections between the purpose of a tree’s bark and what sort of things make the students feel protected in their own lives. Students have really enjoyed the lessons and have produced beautiful texture rubbings and tree collages made of art materials and recycled household items. The final artworks the students make will be assembled into larger tree collages and displayed in the front window of the Brothership Building beginning November 6. \n  \nAlso beginning November 6\, and continuing all month long\, NUarts Studios and Gallery will display the artwork of 6 artists in the storefront windows along Union Street just across the street from Barrington Stage Company’s Mainstage. Displayed will be a new series of paintings\, prints\, and designer fashions. Participating artists include Ilene Richards\, Karen S Jacobs\, Caroline Kelley\, Linda Petrocine\, Sally Tiska Rice\, and Marney Schorr. Each artist works in a variety of genres and media including acrylic and oil paint\, fabric on mannequins\, pastel\, encaustic painting\, and mixed media. The work will be on display through November. \n  \nHotel on North\, 297 North Street\, will feature Horizon by Andrew DeVries through November 30. There will be a reception with the artist\, open to the public\, on Friday\, November 6\, 5 to 8 pm\, as part of First Fridays Artswalk. \nThis exhibit shows the wide scope of the artist’s oeuvre. In the bronze sculptures you will view examples that range from his more well-known dance pieces to works of abstract symbolism. The paintings are pastels done in his studio using live models\, or creations that arise from his sketches drawn in dance studios such as The School at Jacob’s Pillow\, Julliard\, Alvin Ailey and the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre. You will also find an ink and watercolor series that illustrates Andrew’s continued interest in bold color and outline. \n  \nThe November Artswalk will also highlight new murals downtown including: The Sun Will Rise by Jesse Tobin McCauley\, Jay Tobin and Stephanie Quetti at 443 North Street and Gaia on Melville Street created by Mike Carty. Also highlighted will be Artscape’s 3 Outdoor Sculptures throughout downtown which have been extended through April of next year: Paul Angiolillo’s “Flame of Hope”\, Joe Gitterman’s “Couple 3”\, and Joe Chirchirillo’s “Joshua Tree #2”. \n  \nAll art exhibits are on display in participating venues throughout the month. DESCRIPTION:Downtown Pittsfield\, Inc. will present “The Past to Perfection: Art IS What You See” by artist Sarah ‘Sal’ deBethune for the September Artswalk! \nThere will be an opening reception from 5 to 8 pm on September 6 during First Fridays Artswalk. The show is at Downtown Pittsfield\, Inc. 33 Dunham Mall\, Pittsfield\, MA. \nArtist Statement: \n“When I began taking art classes at my high school\, BART Charter\, I was very close minded\, meaning I stuck to drawing mandalas along with a few sketches of flowers. My art teacher\, Mrs. Stack became the biggest factor in my growth as an artist. She pushed me to work with materials I hate\, from observation to abstraction\, and also to push my limits as a perfectionist. It has been so incredibly frustrating\, and though all this frustration I am thankful for the artist that I was pushed to be. I have created pieces that I am proud of\, and now I know how to work with a multitude of mediums that before seemed daunting. \nThis show is a combination of all the stages I worked through.” \nAmbition Statement: \n“Circles. Everyone knows what a circle looks like\, but when you get down to the pen and paper part of it\, it rarely turns out right. There are bumps\, waves\, extra lines\, and maybe even a flat part; this simple image of a circle represents my relationship to art and my vision for the future … Sometimes you have a vision for a piece\, but when you make it\, it isn’t what you imagined. I will stray from the path\, but no matter what I encounter\, I will always return to art … and know that imperfect circles can be beautiful\, too. \nI love math as much as I love art. I hope I’ll be able to incorporate math and art into a career that can pay for my passions. Our artists will give tips on how to prepare for an art exhibit as well as answer any questions from attendees. \nFirst Fridays Artswalk will have representatives on hand to speak specifically about Artswalk and how to get involved\, but our artist panel will also address questions beyond Artswalk. \nWe invite new\, aspiring\, professional\, amateur\, student\, and veteran artists to come network with us and be part of our informational arts discussion! She has shown in solo and group shows in Massachusetts and New York. As the Executive Director of IS183 Art School of the Berkshires she works to ensure that the critical human need to make art can be experienced by everyone. She graduated with a BA in Art History and Education from Mount Holyoke College. Lucie primarily works in cut paper; exploring the connection between living things through anatomy and architecture. Her art is informed by her egalitarian and inclusive worldview: “Nobody is better than anyone else\, and beneath our exteriors\, we all have the same bones.” https://luciecastaldoart.weebly.com/ \nSean McCusker is a local artist who has shown in the Berkshire Museum\, Lichtenstein Center for the Arts\, and The Artful Mind Gallery. His work is build up of thin translucent layers of oil paint; producing surreal landscapes full of light\, color\, and mystery. Active in the arts community\, he is currently a member of the Berkshire Art Association after spending years on the Artscape Committee and curating shows for the First Fridays Artswalk in Pittfield. https://www.sean-mccusker.com/ \nIlene Richard attended the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth and majored in Illustration\, Graphic Design\, and Jewelry Design. During her four years studying illustration\, she was introduced to the business of children’s book illustration. Ilene worked in the jewelry design field for 15 years and was published multiple times in national trade magazines for her unusual sculptural pieces. She still had a yearning to break into the children’s book market\, so with a new goal in place\, she put a hold on her jewelry business\, and started to focus on her drawing and painting skills again. Ilene attended the DeCordova Museum School and the Museum School in Boston. Now she can say that she has had the honor to have worked with many large publishing houses and has had many books published. Her career is truly a joy\, and she intends on drawing and painting forever. http://www.ilenerichard.com/ \nMichael Rousseau was born in Pittsfield\, Massachusetts. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration and a Master of Arts in Teaching (K-12) from the Rhode Island School of Design\, RISD. http://www.mrousseau.com/ \nClemente Sajquiy Ramirez is an immigrant from Guatemala\, and a person who is passionate about community and social justice. Clemente considers himself more of an dual artist and activist as each day passes\, being more inclined to use art as a medium in which to express his opinion. \nMarney Schorr is just one of 20 exhibiting artists at NUarts Gallery & Studios\, 311 North St\, a group that collaborates with area organizations and participates in First Fridays Artswalk May-Oct and Dec\, with interactive open studios and art shows. Marney is a teaching artist\, art therapist and founder/director of the award winning Arts in Recovery for Youth program (AIRY) which helps youth ages 13-26 recover from suicidal thoughts with the expressive arts.
