DESCRIPTION:The US-China relationship is at its lowest point in decades. To what degree are these tensions the product of Trump-era policy changes toward China\, and how (if at all) have these policies changed under President Biden’s leadership? This talk will describe the political changes in China and the US that have produced the current tensions in the bilateral relationship\, and assess the prospects for cooperation between the two countries.  \n  \nSara Newland is an Assistant Professor of government at Smith College\, where her teaching and research focus on the domestic and international politics of mainland China and Taiwan. Online via Zoom. \n  \nHumor in the time of Covid? Perhaps now more than ever\, humor and laughter are needed to cope with the unexpected\, the vicissitudes of life\, and difficult times. The presentation will discuss humor styles and personality traits\, integrate insights from areas such as psychology\, sociology\, and cultural anthropology to not only point to humor as a coping strategy\, but to also illustrate the many other ways in which humor and laughter impact mental and physical well-being. \n  \nRita Nnodim\, Ph.D. graduated from Johannes-Gutenberg University\, Mainz (Germany) with a Masters in African Languages and Literatures. She holds a PhD in West African Studies from the University of Birmingham\, UK. She is an Associate Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts\, where she teaches courses such as Introduction to Cross-cultural and Social Justice Studies\, Global Refugees of the 21st Century\, Madness & Society\, as well as her new class on Humor\, Laughter\, and Comedy. DESCRIPTION:The OLLI Distinguished Speakers Series presents \nAmherst College Professor \nFranklin Odo on \nJapanese Americans in World War II \nWednesday\, August 4\, 5:30 pm \nOnline via Zoom \n\nClick here to register safely and securely online\,\nor call 413.236.2190 (M-F 9am-4pm) to register by phone with a credit card. \n\nThree months after Pearl Harbor was bombed and the U.S. entered WWII\, the nation began incarcerating 120\,000 Americans of Japanese descent\, some of whom were not released until early 1946. This was justified on the basis of national security\, but in 1988 President Ronald Reagan apologized on behalf of the nation and George H.W. Bush issued reparations checks of $20\,000 to all survivors. \nDuring World War Two Japanese Americans seeking to demonstrate patriotism served in the military\, earning numerous combat honors; others went to prison protesting the draft when their families were still behind barbed wire. The Supreme Court upheld these convictions but the cases were vacated in 1983. This episode in American history is one example of our nation’s ongoing and complex history of reconciling national security needs with commitment to the rights of individuals and groups.  \n\nProfessor Franklin Odo is a Japanese American historian\, activist\, and teacher. He received his B.A. in History from Princeton University\, his M.A. in East Asia Regional Studies from Harvard\, and his Ph.D. with a dissertation on Japanese feudalism from Princeton. He was an early leader of Asian American Studies and other Ethnic Studies in the late 1960s. He has taught at numerous institutions including Occidental College\, UCLA\, Cal State Long Beach\, University of Pennsylvania\, University of Maryland College Park\, Hunter College\, Princeton University\, and Columbia University. Odo was director of Ethnic Studies at the University of Hawaii\, and from 1989-1991\, he served as President of the Association for Asian American Studies. He has published extensively. In 1997\, Odo became the founding Director of the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Program\, where he brought and created numerous exhibits featuring Asian Americans. That was the question facing John F. Kennedy at the height of the Cold War— a moment when the Soviet Union built the wall in Berlin\, tested nuclear bombs more destructive than any in history\, and beat the US to every major milestone in space. DESCRIPTION:The OLLI Distinguished Speakers Series presents\nProfessor David Baum on \nWhat is Living and What is Dead in Fascism?\nThe 20th Century’s Most Troubling and Enduring Idea at 100  \nThursday\, June 10\, 2021 at 7:00 pm Eastern \nOnline via Zoom \nClick here to register safely and securely online\nor call 413.236.2190 (M-F 9am-4pm) to register by phone with a credit card. \nWhen Bard College at Simon’s Rock Professor David Baum first began to be interested in the Fascist period in Italy a little over 20 years ago\, Fascism seemed a dead letter\, the very stuff of disinterested scholarship. Since then\, of course\, it’s experienced quite the revival. The 2016 election triggered the publication of at least four noteworthy books on fascism intended for broad audiences and at the same time conjured a movement – Antifa\, short for anti-fascism – that very much held that its nemesis was back. The term “fascist\,” for the longest time merely a generic term of opprobrium\, elbowed its way back into the political lexicon. \nIn retrospect\, the assumption that Fascism was an extinct political species now appears wildly naïve. Current attempts to understand the populist right and hyper nationalists\, here and around the globe\, tend to focus on two causes: one sees rightwing populism as a kind of false consciousness\, a misguided reaction to the economic upheaval of the 21st century; the other\, the playing out of an imbedded racism in American life responding to the perceived threat of demographic change to white privilege. Both explanations have merit\, but ultimately\, we need to return to the origins of Fascism in the post-Great War period to better understand both the forces that initially called forth the movement and the prejudices of the dominant ideological discourses – liberal and socialist/communist – that weakened the West’s response to Fascism’s rise. \nDavid Baum received his PhD in European History from Yale University and has taught at New York University\, Skidmore College\, Union College\, the American University in Iraq-Sulaimani\, West Texas A&M University and is currently at Bard College at Simon’s Rock in Great Barrington. He is also the head of school at the John Dewey Academy\, also in Great Barrington. His research and teaching have focused on the Italian Renaissance\, Italian Fascism\, and the Modern Middle East. But how do we weigh the opportunity afforded through the free market with the marginalization\, oppression\, and pervasive inequality within the distribution of primary social goods? Two competing theories of justice will be introduced to help attendees engage the topic. \nProfessor Kurt Stuke is an adjunct professor at New England College in New Hampshire. She has taught art to incarcerated men and women for over 30 years\, and is the author of Cellblock Visions: Prison Art In America (Princeton University Press). She demonstrates the impact of creating art as a preventive against violence and a catalyst for transformation.  You’ll see images from a vibrant collection of artwork\, created behind bars\, from county jail to death row.
