Enjoy live music from the Berkshire Hills Chorus beginning at 5:30 pm downtown! \n  \nNUarts Studios & Gallery\, the largest artist and artisan studio collective in downtown Pittsfield\, will host a holiday open studios event on December 3\, 5 to 8 pm. Among the artists opening their studios on December 3rd are Stefanie Bessman\, Myk Daigle\, Val Fox\, Kathy Gideon\, Caroline Kelley\, Shany Porras\, Ilene Richard\, Marney Schorr\, and Sally Tiska Rice. \n  \nThose participating in the open studios will offer artwork and wares for sale that would be perfect for holiday gifting. Join Marney Schorr for free\, handmade ornament making for all ages. Entrances to NUarts are at 311 North Street and 21 Union Street. \n  \nNew to Artswalk\, Soma’s Aromas\, 81 East Street\, will present “Mandalas in Bloom” by Elizabeth Nelson for the month of December. There will be a reception with the artist on December 3\, 5 to 8 pm. Hot Plate Brewing will pour samples\, and Elizabeth will create a mandala in real time to show her process. \n  \nThe Unitarian Universalist Church of Pittsfield\, 175 Wendell Avenue\, will present a group show entitled “When Heaven & Nature Sing”\, December 3 through January 17. Featuring photography\, paintings\, pastels\, and mixed-media art\, this group show includes pieces by Paula Dambrauskas\, Phyllis Prysby\, and Sal deBethune. There will be an opportunity to visit with the artists on Friday\, December 3\, 5 to 8 pm\, as part of First Fridays Artswalk. At the craft table in the Social Hall\, visitors will be invited to create\, collage\, and exchange winter holiday cards to take home. \n  \nMembers of the Guild of Berkshire Artists will celebrate the holiday season during the month of December at TKG Real Estate\, 137 North Street. Work exhibited will include paintings\, photographs\, and fiber arts. This exhibit is coordinated with an online show at BerkshireArtists.org which benefits Berkshire United Way. \nFeatured artists are Susan Sabino\, photographer; Katherine Ludington\, fiber artist; Lou Coco\, painter; and Jon Caplan\, photographer. There will be a reception as part of First Fridays Artswalk on Friday\, December 3\, 5 to 8 pm. The work will be up during the month of December and can be viewed when TKG is open. \n  \nThe Brothership Building Window at 141 North Street\, curated by IS183 Art School of the Berkshires\, will feature Proof that I am\, by lowercase d studios\, December 3-31. Sam de Soto (lowercase d studios\, they/he) is an artist\, musician\, and teacher from Long Island\, NY. Largely influenced by abstract expressionism\, street art\, and modern design\, Sam’s work ranges from large canvases to digital photo manipulations. This is their first gallery installation. \n  \nMCLA Pittsfield at 66 Allen Street will feature an art show by Molly Paluilis for the month of December. About her work\, Paluilis says\, “(it) is about feeling using color\, shape\, rhythm\, and movement. It shows healing\, chaos\, excitement\, pain\, and resilience in ways that words cannot. It is used as an outlet to express the inexpressible.” \n  \nThere will be an opening reception in conjunction with First Fridays Artswalk from 5 to 6:30 pm on December 3. After the opening\, Paluilis’s work can be viewed by appointment Monday through Friday\, 9 am to 4 pm. To make an appointment\, please call 413-662-5576 or 413-662-5422. \n  \nThe Lichtenstein Center for the Arts\, 28 Renne Avenue\, will host a grab and go Wreath Sale to benefit the food pantry at the South Congregational Church\, UCC\, Pittsfield on Friday\, December 3 from 12:30 to 6:30 pm. Choose from holiday wreaths\, kissing balls\, and centerpieces all handmade by local artists. \n  \nHotel on North\, 297 North Street\, will feature WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE by Scott Taylor for the December Artswalk. WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE is a sampling of the work Taylor created during the pandemic. Many of the paintings speak of containment\, some visually looking outward\, some inward. Some return to a simpler time that we once knew hoping to find comfort in our own existence. There will be an opportunity to visit with the artist on Friday\, December 3\, 5 to 8 pm\, as part of First Fridays Artswalk. \n  \nThe Berkshire Museum\, 39 South Street\, will present Museum of the Moon\, an awe-inspiring installation of lunar views and glowing moonlight through January 9\, 2022. A combination of art\, science\, and sound\, this radiant installation was created using NASA imagery of the lunar surface\, inspiring those who experience it to contemplate the many ways the Moon connects humankind across time and culture. There will be extended museum hours every Friday evening until 7:30 pm. Admission is required. Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for children aged 4-17. Children 3 and under and museum members are free. \n  \nThe December Artswalk will also highlight art celebrating Cultural Appreciation Week 2021 in the windows of Berkshire Juvenile Court\, 190 North Street. The virtual tour will guide you to murals downtown including: The Sun Will Rise by Jesse Tobin McCauley\, Jay Tobin and Stephanie Quetti at 443 North Street and Gaia on Melville Street by Mike Carty. Also highlighted will be all of Artscape’s Pittsfield Paintboxes. \n  \nAll art exhibits are on display in participating venues throughout the month. His music is a blend of moody\, guitar driven rock and polyrhythmic groove\, all run through the filter of a very serious singer/songwriter. Playing eclectic sets at hundreds of shows every year\, Benfield has become an underground favorite at festivals\, rock clubs\, coffeehouses\, and house concerts. \nThe Marketplace Cafe’s parklet at 53 North Street will feature The Midnight Anthem: a musical trio made up of Catherine\, Sophia and Grace\, cousins by birth\, but sisters at heart. The group has an uncanny knack for creating music that is both fun to listen to and touches the soul\, and their music is an entertaining blend of original songs and popular tunes with a country flair. \nIndoors Out! RAWDance is based out of Hudson\, NY and San Francisco\, CA. \nDancers of The Berkshires\, a local dance collective made up of emerging choreographers and dancers\, will be performing two works. The first\, Qualia\, is choreographed by Fiona Scruggs and performed by Veronica Bone and Gillian Ebersole. Qualia is inspired by one’s individual experience of consciousness. \nThe second\, Remnants\, is choreographed by Anna Gishan and performed by Fran Katz\, and explores the questions: What remains? How do we remember? \nMolly Hess\, a Berkshires based choreographer and dancer\, creates playful and tender work meant to be enjoyed by audiences of all ages. For this event\, she will be joined by Mary Teusche in a work entitled “Out-of-House” Plants. \nDanielle Galienti\, a North Adams based dancer and choreographer\, will present Material Imagination: the birth of a black hole. In this piece\, Danielle uses a mylar box dress to explore expansion and collapse. \nPerformances will loop over the course of the two-hour event\, with each performer dancing twice\, so there is plenty of time to catch the action. \nIndoors Out! You can view all locations by clicking here\, and new this year\, you can download the PocketSights app to follow a virtual walking tour on your cell phone. \n  \nThe Lichtenstein Center for the Arts\, 28 Renne Avenue\, will present THE CHASE / GRAUBARD SHOW\, September 3-25\, featuring works by married couple\, Karen Chase and Paul Graubard. \n  \nKaren Chase paints abstract paintings. Paul Graubard paints narrative\, visionary works. Their work could not be more different. This show highlights a few of their collaborations\, as well as their individual paintings. When they make collaborations\, each is free to obliterate or change what the other has done. Chase\, primarily a writer and poet\, has been painting since she was a little girl. Painting is a basic activity for her\, like cooking or washing. Graubard began to paint when he was in his sixties\, giving up his practice as a psychologist.  A number of museums collect his work. \n  \nOne of their collaborations\, Hongera Obama\, Tanzanian Congratulations\, will be silently auctioned off. The proceeds will be donated to the restoration of the Clinton AME Zion Church in Great Barrington. The silent auction is available in person at the Lichtenstein or you may contact slemme@cityofpittsfield.org for information on how to bid on the item. \n  \nThere will be an opening reception on Friday\, September 3\, 5 to 7 pm\, during First Fridays Artswalk (gallery will stay open until 8 pm). You can view all locations at www.FirstFridaysArtswalk.com\, and new this year\, you can download the PocketSights app to follow a virtual walking tour on your cell phone. \n  \nThe Berkshire Art Association (BAA) is hosting “Everyone Is a Hero: A Comic and Cartoon Art Tribute to Our Local Heroes” at the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts\, 28 Renne Avenue\, August 6 – 28\, featuring original artwork and signed auction items created by popular Marvel\, DC\, and The Simpsons comic book artists: Luke McDonnell\, Penim Loureiro\, and Bill Morrison. \n  \nThe show is curated by BAA board member and Pittsfield resident Lawrence Klein\, founder of the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art in New York City. “I came up with a few themes\, and my idea was to ask American comic book artist Luke McDonnell and Portuguese comic book artist Penim Loureiro to create unique drawings from the same list of subjects\,” says Klein. “How do two artists from different parts of the world view the same subject matter? They took up the challenge of creating their own visions and the results are amazing.” The show also features sketches and autographed items for auction by Bill Morrison\, creative director of The Simpsons and Futurama\, and Patrick McDonnell\, creator of MUTTS. Local Berkshire artists will also show their illustration work. “The show brings together an impressive group of artists and the result is great fun\,” says BAA member Liz Bevilacqua. “You’ll see familiar heroes and heroines like Batman\, Iron Man\, and Harley Quinn in new and creative ways.” \n  \nThere will be a sneak peek of the exhibit on Friday\, August 6\, 5 to 8 pm\, during the First Fridays Artswalk\, and the opening party is Saturday\, August 7 from 3 to 6 pm. \n  \nFor the month of August\, The Marketplace Café\, 53 North Street\, will feature Finding Our Way Creations by Jess Frey. There will be an opening reception on Friday\, August 6\, 5 to 8 pm\, as part of First Fridays Artswalk. \n  \nThis series of art is an expression of the transformational process of getting lost\, finding the way\, forgetting the way\, becoming the way\, and being the way. Each painting is accompanied by a poem\, telling a story\, sharing an experience\, and connecting written word to visual art. The textiles on view are selections from their first two years of exploring how to make new surfaces and what they can do. They were handwoven with wool\, cotton\, and linen on\, and in collaboration with\, centuries-old looms. Covering a range of familiar structures\, including plain weave\, twill\, M’s & O’s\, waffle weave\, and lace\, they try to take these techniques in new directions through juxtaposition\, color\, and construction. \n  \nThe Unitarian Universalist Church of Pittsfield\, 175 Wendell Avenue\, will feature new photographs by Linda Merry in a show entitled The Superflight Exhibit: Finch Irruption 2020 for the month of August. This exhibit highlights a mere sampling of an incredible irruption of northern finches that inundated not only New England\, but also places as far south as Alabama. \n  \nThere will be framed photographic prints on exhibit as well as a digital exhibition showcasing additional works. There will be an opening reception on Friday\, August 6\, 5 to 8 pm\, as part of First Fridays Artswalk. \n  \nArtists in the Guild of Berkshire Artists will show their work in a show entitled Plein Air in the Berkshires during the month of August at TKG Real Estate\, 137 North Street. Jensen. Jensen is an artist working in watercolor who has lived and painted the landscapes of Western MA since 2001. She enjoys the medium of watercolor for its interplay of control and spontaneity. To view NEXT at an alternate time\, please call 413-499-9348 to make an appointment. \n  \nThe Brothership Building Window\, 141 North Street\, curated by IS183 Art School of the Berkshires will feature Collage Trees by Mrs. Callahan’s 5th Grade Egremont Elementary Class for the month of November. \n  \nBRAINworks educator Judy Callahan (grade 5\, Pittsfield)\, in partnership with IS183 Art School of the Berkshires\, brought science and social-emotional learning into her virtual 5th grade classroom this month through the power of collage! Over the last two weeks in four virtual classes with IS183\, students have learned about collage\, trees\, and frottage: a colorful texture-rubbing visual art technique. Judy and IS183 educators Lucie and Brielle designed the lesson to incorporate both science and SEL standards. Students examined the natural characteristics of a tree (for example\, its bark and how it protects the tree) and drew connections between the purpose of a tree’s bark and what sort of things make the students feel protected in their own lives. Students have really enjoyed the lessons and have produced beautiful texture rubbings and tree collages made of art materials and recycled household items. The final artworks the students make will be assembled into larger tree collages and displayed in the front window of the Brothership Building beginning November 6. \n  \nAlso beginning November 6\, and continuing all month long\, NUarts Studios and Gallery will display the artwork of 6 artists in the storefront windows along Union Street just across the street from Barrington Stage Company’s Mainstage. Displayed will be a new series of paintings\, prints\, and designer fashions. Participating artists include Ilene Richards\, Karen S Jacobs\, Caroline Kelley\, Linda Petrocine\, Sally Tiska Rice\, and Marney Schorr. Each artist works in a variety of genres and media including acrylic and oil paint\, fabric on mannequins\, pastel\, encaustic painting\, and mixed media. The work will be on display through November. \n  \nHotel on North\, 297 North Street\, will feature Horizon by Andrew DeVries through November 30. There will be a reception with the artist\, open to the public\, on Friday\, November 6\, 5 to 8 pm\, as part of First Fridays Artswalk. \nThis exhibit shows the wide scope of the artist’s oeuvre. In the bronze sculptures you will view examples that range from his more well-known dance pieces to works of abstract symbolism. The paintings are pastels done in his studio using live models\, or creations that arise from his sketches drawn in dance studios such as The School at Jacob’s Pillow\, Julliard\, Alvin Ailey and the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre. You will also find an ink and watercolor series that illustrates Andrew’s continued interest in bold color and outline. \n  \nThe November Artswalk will also highlight new murals downtown including: The Sun Will Rise by Jesse Tobin McCauley\, Jay Tobin and Stephanie Quetti at 443 North Street and Gaia on Melville Street created by Mike Carty.
