There will be an opening reception with the artists during the August 7th Artswalk from 5 to 8 pm. \n  \nWater has long symbolized life\, transformation\, healing\, and renewal. “The Spiritual Essence of Water” explores these universal themes through an immersive exhibition featuring the artwork of Berkshire artist Gail Gelburd and Tibetan artist Tenzin Wangchuk. \n  \nGelburd’s richly layered mixed-media works\, inspired by waterfalls in the Berkshires and around the world\, combine photography\, encaustic\, sculpture\, illuminated installations\, and fabric to evoke water’s beauty\, power\, and spiritual presence. Her work invites viewers to reflect on the connection between humanity and the natural world. \n  \nComplementing the exhibition are sacred Tibetan sand paintings by Tenzin Wangchuk\, a former senior monk and artist for His Holiness the Dalai Lama. His intricate works are rooted in the spiritual traditions of Tibetan Buddhism and have been shared with the community through his long friendship and artistic collaboration with Gelburd. \n  \nPresented by Sanctum Gallery\, a program of Healing Hearts Sanctuary\, the exhibition will also feature artist talks\, guided meditations\, music\, and other community programs throughout the month. Admission is free\, and all are welcome. \n  \nBerkshire Art Center (BAC) will host “Kid Artwork Across All Ages\, from the Summer in the Studios Program at Berkshire Art Center” at Framework by Downtown Pittsfield\, Inc. located at 437 North Street. \n  \nThere will be an opening during the August 7 First Fridays at Five from 5 to 8 pm. \n  \nSolarium Plant Shop\, 46 West Street\, will feature “Layered”- Visionary Alchemy of Paper\, Scissors & Glue by Margo Serina during the Artswalk on Friday\, August 7 from 5 to 8 pm. \n  \nMargo Serina of Sacred Bridge Studio is a Berkshire native and life-long artist who explores with various mediums to create art while gravitating towards collage and watercolor as two of her favorite forms of expression. Her work features contrast\, textures\, and vibrant color combinations as well as the use of mixed media and elements of nature. \n  \n“Layered” – Visionary Alchemy of Paper\, Scissors & Glue is a collection of collages Margo has created while exploring and allowing the paper she cuts and collects to come together organically in her creative process with both simplicity and articulation of the elements involved to create multi layered and cohesive images. She finds this process to be both meditative and highly therapeutic. \n  \nHotel on North\, 297 North Street\, will feature Autumn Phoenix Photography for the month of August. \n  \nAutumn Phoenix is a professional artist and photographer. Her work spans landscapes\, animals\, cityscapes\, and portraiture. Her photographs are defined by unique lighting and vibrant color to capture moments that might otherwise go unnoticed. She is inspired by her grandfather. She views each photograph as a “treasure chest” to preserve experiences long after they pass. \n  \nThe show will be on view on Friday\, August 7\, from 5 to 8 pm during the Artswalk. \n  \nO.U.R. Resurge\, 119 Fenn Street\, will feature the “Awamu Artist Co-op” with artists Ashley Sposato\, Matt Brinton\, Nicole Fecteau\, and Rochely DeJesus Melendez. “Awamu” means “Let’s go together” in Luganda! \n  \nThere will be a reception with the artists on Friday\, August 7\, 5 to 8 pm\, including a poetry reading by Ashley Sposato\, a book signing with Matthew Brinton\, a meal\, and a table for kids to make art. \n  \nAshley Sposato is a chronically ill poet and mixed-media artist based in the Berkshires. Through her project Idyll & Wild\, she explores love\, longing\, grief\, and transcendence with myth\, ancient history\, and the natural world. \nOn a good day\, you can find her by the riverside calling to birds and buried in ancient Greek poetry. We won’t talk about other days (those are reserved for poems). More conventionally\, she can be found on Substack as Idyll & Wild\, and on Instagram as idyllwildpoetry. \nAshley is published in journals by “The Way Back To Ourselves” and is Pushcart Prize nominated. She is currently working on her inaugural book of poetry\, Hymns for the Orchard. \n  \nMatthew Brinton’s artwork and writing are inspired by the experiences that have shaped his life. On the page and on the canvas\, he attempts to express his understanding of the human condition. Matt’s hope is that by being honest about his experiences\, he can connect with a universal truth and remind others that they are not alone in their struggle to find meaning and purpose. \n  \n​Matt’s drawings are done in a realistic style but often incorporate a painterly and classical linear style. The drawings of landscape and still life he creates are inspired by the sheer beauty of the subjects. His portraiture mainly consists of historical figures who have impacted his life. In his portrayal of these figures\, the main focus is to capture their inner spiritual lives. \n  \nNicole Fecteau’s art is an expression of the interconnectedness of life\, the unending tapestries of stories we weave as communal beings deeply connected to each other and also profoundly integrated within our natural world. Utilizing fabric\, colored pencils\, and embroidery\, Nicole strives to portray various allusions to life and faith as a journey that brings us deeper into our shared experience\, inviting us into more heartfelt levels of compassion and mercy. \n  \nRochely DeJesus Melendez is growing in her art mediums and expanding her vision – she feels that our lives are shifting so much. These seismic oceanic currents we all feel generationally\, environmentally\, historically\, and politically can be funneled and expressed through art in ways that invite curiosity and shift mindsets. \n  \nIndie Readery and Records\, 314 North Street\, will feature a collection of collage and painting on unconventional surfaces by Brent Ridge now through September 1. Stop by during the August 7 Artswalk from 5 to 8 pm. \n  \nBrent uses patterned recycled papers and fabrics in place of traditional canvas and paper. These works depict the post-industrial landscape through a tension of decay and renewal of image\, material\, and abstraction. Ridge is a Berkshires-based artist whose work delves into themes of industrial decay\, natural beauty\, and human resilience. A local artist\, originally from Flint\, MI\, Brent has an artistic history in NYC\, abroad\, and in Boston before resettling in the Berkshires. He is currently the art teacher at Reid Middle School in Pittsfield\, where he inspires young artists. \n  \nDowntown Pittsfield\, Inc. and First Fridays Artswalk will feature Maru Domínguez as the August “Art in the Park” artist. Maru will present a special “Faces of Pittsfield Community Art Experience” for the August 7 First Fridays at Five from 5 to 8 pm. \n  \nFaces of Pittsfield is a community photography project that celebrates the people who live\, work\, and visit Pittsfield through the art of portraiture. This August\, we invite you to become part of the artwork itself. \n  \nTogether\, we will create a collaborative community portrait by painting and decorating our own faces and self-portraits\, celebrating the diversity\, stories\, and connections that make Pittsfield unique. Her work features contrast\, textures\, and vibrant color combinations as well as the use of mixed media and elements of nature. \n  \n“Layered” – Visionary Alchemy of Paper\, Scissors & Glue is a collection of collages Margo has created while exploring and allowing the paper she cuts and collects to come together organically in her creative process with both simplicity and articulation of the elements involved to create multi layered and cohesive images. She finds this process to be both meditative and highly therapeutic. \n  \nSolarium Plant Shop\, 46 West Street\, will feature “Layered”- Visionary Alchemy of Paper\, Scissors & Glue by Margo Serina. \n  \n  \nHotel on North\, 297 North Street\, will feature Autumn Phoenix Photography for the month of July. \n  \nAutumn Phoenix is a professional artist and photographer. Her work spans landscapes\, animals\, cityscapes\, and portraiture. Her photographs are defined by unique lighting and vibrant color to capture moments that might otherwise go unnoticed. She is inspired by her grandfather. She views each photograph as a “treasure chest” to preserve experiences long after they pass. \n  \nThere will be a reception with the artist on Saturday\, July 11 from 1 to 4 pm during the Artswalk. \n  \nSanctum Gallery at 148 North Street will feature artist Amy Dawn Kotel during the Special Saturday Artswalk. Amy’s exhibit will be on view Saturday\, July 11 starting at 1 pm with an Opening Reception on Saturday\, July 11\, from 3:30 to 7 pm. The reception will feature live music by Improvisational Musician (and Amy’s husband)\, Matt Swift. \n  \nAmy Dawn Kotel creates vibrant\, immersive artwork that bursts with movement\, color and curiosity. Inspired by nature\, spirituality\, human connection\, and the hidden layers beneath everyday life\, her paintings and mixed media works transform countless forms into expansive dreamscapes\, surreal imagery\, and emotionally rich worlds. Her work invites viewers to wander\, wonder\, and discover beauty in both the chaos and magic of being human. \n  \nMatt Swift’s music spans electric bass\, guitar\, and synths. \n  \nAisha will also have a table of her beautiful soaps and candles available on a table outside the gallery. \n  \nSanctum Gallery at 148 North Street will feature artist Amy Dawn Kotel during the Special Saturday Artswalk. \n  \nStarting July 1st\, twenty poetry broadsides created by Pittsfield High School Students will be on display in the windows of the first floor of the Onota Building at 74 North Street as part of an Arts & Literacy Fellowship developed by The Mastheads. \n  \nThe 11” X 17” broadside posters were printed with Xerox and Risograph on locally-made hemp\, bamboo\, or cotton paper\, generously donated by Onyx Mill. Each one features a poem by a Berkshire County elementary school student\, and a design by Pittsfield High School Students. \n  \nThe broadsides were developed as part of the Masthead Needed Arts & Literacy Fellowship\, a collaboration between The Mastheads and the children’s publishing press Citation Needed\, that provides Pittsfield High School ESL students with multimedia arts-sector experience\, including instruction in visual art\, poetry\, songwriting\, bookmaking\, graphic design\, and sales. \n  \nFor each broadside\, pairs of high school fellows from Marina Coppola’s and Chloe Mascitelli’s ESL classes read dozens of poems written by local elementary school students. Each pair selected a poem and explored the work through different media\, including zines\, drawing\, and printmaking in the PRESS Room at MCLA. Finally\, in a series of design and collage workshops\, students developed a coherent broadside representation of the work. \n  \nFunding for The Masthead Needed Arts & Literacy Fellowship comes from the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation\, the Blackwing Foundation\, and the Feigenbaum Foundation. \n  \nO.U.R Resurge\, 119 Fenn Street\, will feature artists Ashley Sposato\, Matt Brinton\, Nicole Fecteau\, Rochely DeJesus Melendez\, and Hannah Mitchell. \n  \nThere will be a reception with the artists on Saturday\, July 11\, 1 to 4 pm\, including a poetry reading\, snacks\, and a table for kids to make art. \n  \nAshley Sposato is a chronically ill poet and mixed-media artist based in the Berkshires. Through her project Idyll & Wild\, she explores love\, longing\, grief\, and transcendence with myth\, ancient history\, and the natural world. \n  \nOn a good day\, you can find her by the riverside calling to birds and buried in ancient Greek poetry. We won’t talk about other days (those are reserved for poems). More conventionally\, she can be found on Substack as Idyll & Wild\, and on Instagram as idyllwildpoetry. \n  \nAshley is published in journals by “The Way Back To Ourselves” and is Pushcart Prize nominated. She is currently working on her inaugural book of poetry\, Hymns for the Orchard. \n  \nMatthew Brinton’s artwork and writing are inspired by the experiences that have shaped his life. On the page and on the canvas\, he attempts to express his understanding of the human condition. Matt’s hope is that by being honest about his experiences\, he can connect with a universal truth and remind others that they are not alone in their struggle to find meaning and purpose. \n  \n​Matt’s drawings are done in a realistic style but often incorporate a painterly and classical linear style. The drawings of landscape and still life he creates are inspired by the sheer beauty of the subjects. His portraiture mainly consists of historical figures who have impacted his life. In his portrayal of these figures\, the main focus is to capture their inner spiritual lives. \n  \nNicole Fecteau’s art is an expression of the interconnectedness of life\, the unending tapestries of stories we weave as communal beings deeply connected to each other and also profoundly integrated within our natural world. Utilizing fabric\, colored pencils\, and embroidery\, Nicole strives to portray various allusions to life and faith as a journey that brings us deeper into our shared experience\, inviting us into more heartfelt levels of compassion and mercy. \n  \nRochely DeJesus Melendez is growing in various art mediums and will be showcasing her watercolor and acrylic paintings. \n  \nHannah Mitchell is a craftsperson who enjoys creating jewelry. She will be showcasing her bracelets for sale. \n  \nIndie Readery and Records\, 314 North Street\, will feature a collection of collage and painting on unconventional surfaces by Brent Ridge now through September 1. Stop by during the July 11 Artswalk from 1 to 4 pm to take a look! \n  \nBrent uses patterned recycled papers and fabrics in place of traditional canvas and paper. These works depict the post-industrial landscape through a tension of decay and renewal of image\, material\, and abstraction. Ridge is a Berkshires-based artist whose work delves into themes of industrial decay\, natural beauty\, and human resilience. A local artist\, originally from Flint\, MI\, Brent has an artistic history in NYC\, abroad\, and in Boston before resettling in the Berkshires. He is currently the art teacher at Reid Middle School in Pittsfield\, where he inspires young artists. \n  \nBerkshire Art Center (BAC) is hosting their summer Faculty Artist Show at Framework by Downtown Pittsfield\, Inc. located at 437 North Street. \n  \nExplore a vibrant range of mediums\, including collage\, printmaking\, watercolor\, photography\, pastel\, and more. SUMMARY:Dance and Drum with the Berkshire Rhythm Keepers
DESCRIPTION:At the June 5th First Fridays at Five\, on North Street at the South end of the road closure\, will be “Dance and Drum with the Berkshire Rhythm Keepers.” There will be a free Berkshire Rhythm Keepers performance from 5:40 to 6:25 pm\, followed by a free dance class with Noel Staples-Freeman featuring live drumming by Aimée Gelinas\, Dan Cohen\, and the Berkshire Rhythm Keepers advanced drummers from 6:45 to 7:30 pm. \nThe Berkshire Rhythm Keepers are an intergenerational\, multi-level community drum and song group founded and led by Aimée Gelinas M.Ed\, Director of the Tamarack Hollow Nature and Cultural Center and co-founder of Gaia Roots and Trio Candela. The group is assisted by Dan Cohen. BRK participants attend Aimee’s weekly Monday evening drum and song classes at the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts in Pittsfield\, which is open to beginners\, intermediate and advanced drummers. The group performs traditional music on folkloric instruments from West Africa and the Caribbean\, as well as original creations. Members of BRK have been studying and performing together for 15+ years. \nAimée Gelinas M.Ed is a musician and naturalist educator who has been performing and facilitating educational programs for 30+ years. She is a skilled and seasoned nature educator and outdoor guide as well as a master percussionist and singer specializing in West African and Caribbean music specifically folkloric percussion such as Djembe\, Doun Doun\, Conga\, Shekere\, and more. \nDaniel Cohen is a musician\, music educator and outdoorsman. He co-founded and is the trails & intern coordinator for the Tamarack Hollow Nature & Cultural Center in Windsor\, MA. Dan is a master guitarist in both electric and acoustic styles and skilled percussionist specializing in West African Doun Doun drums and percussion. He is a member of the world music ensemble Gaia Roots and co-founder of the groups Trio Candela and Sifer. He assists leading two intergenerational student drum performance ensembles: The Berkshire and The Valley Rhythm Keepers. \nNoel Staples-Freeman is a cultural bearer\, choreographer\, and teaching artist whose work sustains African and African Diaspora dance as living traditions. She is the Artistic Director of Uprising Dance Theatre and the Berkshire African Dance & Drum Collective (BADD)\, offering intergenerational classes\, workshops\, and performances throughout the Berkshires. Sister Noel trained at the Billie Pope School of Dance\, the Elma Lewis School of Fine Arts\, and the Boston Conservatory\, and earned a B.S. in Children’s Theatre with a minor in Dance from Emerson College. Her artistic lineage includes The Art of Black Dance and Music\, Inc. (ABDM)\, directed by DeAma Battle and Bamidele Osumarea and Koumpo West African Dance Company under the direction of Master Drummer Ibrahima Camara. She is a teaching artist with Berkshire Pulse\, CATA\, Multicultural BRIDGE Solidarity House\, OLLI\, and Jacob’s Pillow\, and holds community classes at the Berkshire Music School in Pittsfield. Noel is a graduate of the Blackshires Leadership Accelerator Program Cohort 3 (2025) and the EforAll Berkshire County Accelerator (2025). Stop by during the June 5 First Fridays Artswalk from 5 to 8 pm to take a look! \nBrent uses patterned recycled papers and fabrics in place of traditional canvas and paper. These works depict the post-industrial landscape through a tension of decay and renewal of image\, material\, and abstraction. Ridge is a Berkshires-based artist whose work delves into themes of industrial decay\, natural beauty\, and human resilience. A local artist\, originally from Flint\, MI\, Brent has an artistic history in NYC\, abroad\, and in Boston before resettling in the Berkshires. He is currently the art teacher at Reid Middle School in Pittsfield\, where he inspires young artists. \nSanctum Gallery\, 148 North Street\, will feature artists Richard Way and Ed Moran during the First Fridays Artswalk on Friday\, June 5 from 5 to 8 pm. \nRichard Way’s work has been described as ethereal\, spiritual\, and quietly evocative\, at times revealing an undercurrent of tension or subtle humor. Rooted in an intuitive approach\, the practice functions as a form of visual journaling\, translating fleeting thoughts and emotional states into layered compositions. Drawing primarily from an inward source\, the artist engages the external world through a distinct visual language of symbol and metaphor. The resulting works unfold with a dreamlike logic\, inviting viewers into a contemplative space where interpretation remains open and deeply personal. \nEd Moran is a painter based in Berkshire County. His creative pursuits also include singing and songwriting\, often in collaboration with fellow musicians. When not immersed in his artistic work\, he serves as a nurse in the Berkshires. \nMoran’s work is rooted in both imagination and lived experience\, bridging creative expression with a deep sense of care for the community. \nThe Lichtenstein Center for the Arts at 28 Renne Avenue will present the 2026 OLLI Art Exhibition\, a showcase of work by members of OLLI at Berkshire Community College\, June 3-26. \nThe exhibition features work by 39 artists in a range of media. OLLI at BCC is a volunteer-driven\, inclusive learning community of adults 50+ offering diverse educational programs\, social interaction\, and community engagement. Stop by during the May 1 First Fridays Artswalk from 5 to 8 pm to take a look! \n  \nThe reduction woodblock printing that Joan uses involves carving away sections of a single block to produce multi-color images. At the end of a series the block is completely carved away. The dry felting process involves layering various colors of wool using specialized barbed needles to combine loose wool fibers. \n  \nSanctum Gallery\, 148 North Street\, will present the art of award-winning Navajo painter Walter Dan during the First Fridays Artswalk on Friday\, May 1 from 5 to 8 pm. \n  \nMonica White will be showcasing the celebrated work of her father\, Walter Dan\, a renowned Navajo artist. The exhibition offers visitors a rare chance to experience the depth\, tradition\, and storytelling of Navajo painting through Walter Dan’s powerful artwork. Monica will share the powerful stories of her father’s art with us. \n  \n“Sharing my father’s work is a way to honor our family and culture\,” said White. “Each piece carries the history\, spirit\, and creativity of our heritage.” \n  \nWalter’s paintings consist of serene southwestern life with landscapes\, animals\, and portraits most influenced by his Diné and cowboy culture. Walter focuses on using acrylic\, oil\, pencil\, and ink. He was an art student at the Institute of American Indian Arts-IAIA in Santa Fe\, New Mexico\, in the early 1970’s. Walter’s most prominent influence and mentor is Allen Houser\, a highly regarded Native American artist\, and his IAIA instructor. \n  \nPittsfield High School will present its Senior Show and AP Placement Portfolios for the month of May at the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts\, 28 Renne Avenue. These dedicated students have spent years developing their artistic voices\, often taking multiple art classes throughout their high school journey. As a culminating experience\, they have thoughtfully planned and curated a collection that represents their growth and creativity. \n  \nThe exhibition features a diverse range of work in a salon-style display\, including pieces from Drawing & Painting\, Ceramics\, and Photography. Her paintings evoke a sense of space that has been flattened and layered\, revealing strands and structures of line and color interacting fluidly with hidden landscapes. In addition to painting\, she frequently works sculpturally\, creating forms that celebrate both line and color. Born in Maryland\, Melissa attended the Maryland Institute College of Art where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. She currently lives and works in the Berkshire Hills of Massachusetts. \n  \nLucie Castaldo is a visual artist based in the beautiful Berkshires. Her work is characterized by a blend of artistic techniques – combining printmaking\, cut paper\, collage\, and photography. She holds a BA in Art History and Education from Mount Holyoke College\, which informs her interdisciplinary approach to art. \n  \nHotel on North\, 297 North Street\, will feature “Tree of Life Series” – acrylic paintings by Mary Davidson\, May 1 through June 30\, 2026. \n  \nThere will be an opening reception with the artist on Friday\, May 1 from 5 to 8 pm during the First Fridays Artswalk. \n  \nDowntown Pittsfield\, Inc. and First Fridays Artswalk will feature Peter Vacchina as the May “Art in the Park” artist. \n  \nPeter will be popped up in Palace Park (near 122 North Street) from 5 to 8 pm\, inviting the community to add pieces to a “made-on-the-spot” mosaic and discussing his process with all who are interested. \n  \nPeter is a sculptor working primarily in marble\, mosaic\, and the occasional ice sculpture. His art reflects his personal life experiences\, particularly his time living and traveling abroad. Before becoming a full-time artist in Pittsfield\, Peter lived and taught science in Belgium\, Brazil\, Mexico\, England\, Italy\, and California. “I appreciate the challenge of working in marble and its potential to last for centuries. DESCRIPTION:Downtown Pittsfield\, Inc. will host our Annual Downtown Pittsfield Spring Cleanup on Friday\, April 17\, 12 to 4 pm. Early check-in/pick-up of trash bags will be available starting at 11 am. Participants are welcome to drop in to the Cleanup at any time between 12 and 4 pm. \nDPI’s Downtown Pittsfield Cleanups are good-natured competitions between local companies and individuals supporting an important part of DPI’s mission to keep downtown clean\, safe\, and friendly. This year over 150 volunteers representing over a dozen local businesses and organizations will take to the streets for this annual event. \nParticipating teams include Barrington Stage Company\, BCARC Transitions\, Berkshire REALTORS\, Berkshire Family YMCA\, Berkshire Medical Center\, Berkshire Museum\, Berkshire Theatre Group\, CT Management Group\, Carr Hardware\, Christian Center of Pittsfield\, City of Pittsfield\, Crane Currency\, Guardian Life Insurance Company of America\, MOLARI\, SABIC High Performance Products\, ServiceNet (The Pearl\, The First\, and Living In Recovery)\, and Temescal Wellness. \nThe Downtown Cleanup area includes North and South Street between East and West Housatonic Streets and Berkshire Medical Center and all side streets.
