SUMMARY:September 6 First Fridays at Five
DESCRIPTION:The September 6 First Fridays at Five will feature live music\, art\, dance\, family fun\, shopping\, food\, and entertainment throughout downtown Pittsfield. \n  \nThe theme of the September 6th First Fridays at Five will be a Taste of Pittsfield and the event will also celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month (which officially kicks off on September 15). \n  \nGet a Taste of Pittsfield with a section of the event dedicated to local food trucks\, and there will also be many downtown restaurants serving food outside during the event. BB’s Hot Spot\, D’s Island Food Truck\, La Chalupa & La Enchilada\, and Two Sisters’ Spirits will be among the featured food trucks. \n  \nYo Soy Arte and Latinas413 will headline the September 6th event on the mobile City Stage with a curated line-up of artists with ties to Argentina\, Mexico\, and Brazil. \n  \nSinger and musician\, Clara Guatta will kick off the event on the City Stage at 5:30 pm. Clara was born in Pittsfield\, but her entire family is originally from Argentina\, and she grew up in the city of Buenos Aires. \n  \nAt 6:30 pm\, Luana Dias David will perform. Luana is a performing artist and choreographer based in the Berkshires. Hailing from Sao Paulo\, Brazil\, she brings a rich cultural background steeped in Samba\, Capoeira\, Break Dancing\, Latin Dance\, Jazz\, and Classic Ballet\, which profoundly influence her dance philosophy and style. With over 20 years of experience as a performing artist and instructor\, Luana has traveled globally\, sharing her art and passion for dance. Her work authentically represents cultural dance pieces\, evident in collaborations with esteemed organizations such as Jacob’s Pillow\, Berkshire Pulse\, and the Mill Town Foundation. \n  \nCancioneros will close out the evening on the City Stage starting at 7:15 pm. Cancioneros features Mariano Cabrera (vocals/rhythm guitar)\, Erick Delmoral (Mexican guitarrón/guitar)\, and Juan Delmoral (lead guitar). \n  \nMariano and Erick are originally from Atlixco\, a city in the Mexican state of Puebla. The group was formed after Mariano was invited to work in restaurants\, playing from table to table. He invited Erick to join\, and years later\, Juan\, Erick’s son\, joined the group\, contributing a great natural talent for the guitar. \n  \nIn the case of inclement weather\, the performances will be at the First United Methodist Church\, 55 Fenn Street. \n  \nPersip Park\, 175 North Street\, will feature a live performance by the Housie Shakers as part of the September 6 First Fridays at Five and the free Downtown Pittsfield Summer Music Series. \n  \nWhile the Housie Shakers are a new band on the Berkshire music scene\, its members have deep local roots and have been playing music in the area for decades. All four members grew up in the Berkshires\, and after various adventures living around the country and the world\, returned here to raise their families. Having played together informally for various short-term projects in recent years\, they decided the time was ripe to solidify the lineup and start playing out more. \n  \nThe Housie Shakers bring a variety of styles to the mix\, with wide-ranging covers and original music spanning rock\, blues\, pop\, bluegrass\, reggae\, Americana\, and improvisational groove. They don’t take themselves too seriously and have no ambitions to go on the road (as if the 12 kids they have collectively would make that possible anyway)… they’re just out to play local gigs and give people a chance to hang out\, let loose\, dance\, and have a good time! The band’s name is a nod to their home community and the people and places that have shaped their musical journeys. \n  \nThe Housie Shakers are Simeon Bittman (drums & vocals)\, Noah Cook-Dubin (guitar\, cavaquinho & vocals)\, Jonathan Denmark (guitar & vocals)\, and Colin Ovitsky (bass). \n  \nIn the case of inclement weather\, the Housie Shakers will be at the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts\, 28 Renne Avenue. \n  \nSottile Park\, at the corner of North and Eagle Street\, will feature the Pittsfield Disability Commission which is the Community Partner for the September First Fridays at Five. They will be joined by AdLib\, Berkshire Regional Transit Authority (BRTA)\, Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission (MRC)\, and UCP of Western Massachusetts. UCP will be demonstrating assistive tech\, DCR/Universal Access will be bringing equipment\, and the Commission will have a table supporting the Get Out and Vote effort for people with disabilities with voter registration cards. There will be giveaways of disability flags\, bracelets\, popcorn\, and water. Across the street\, there will be an art show at AdLib\, Inc: Center for Independent Living (215 North Street). \n  \nThe Lichtenstein Center for the Arts\, 28 Renne Avenue\, will present “OUT OF THE STUDIOS: Artists of the Lichtenstein”. “Out of the Studios” showcases artists who have studios at the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts. His drawings are done in a realistic style but often incorporate a painterly and classical linear style. His drawings of landscape and still life are inspired by the sheer beauty of the subjects\, and his portraiture mainly consists of historical figures who have impacted his life. Matthew will be signing his book “Tales From A Bygone Era” during the Artswalk event. \n  \nLiving in Recovery\, 75 North Street\, will feature artworks by Anika Grey and Stephanie “Sesame” Campbell on Friday\, September 6\, 5 to 8 pm. \n  \nAs a digital artist based in Pittsfield\, Anika Grey finds inspiration in the modern world\, combining elements of electro-music and psychedelic landscapes to create vibrant and colorful designs. The dichotomy between technology and nature is a recurring theme in his work\, as he explores the fusion of these two seemingly opposing forces. \n  \nUtilizing various mediums\, Anika often experiments with bold and bright colors to create a sense of energy and movement within his pieces. From digital canvases to mounted wood blocks\, he continuously pushes the boundaries of traditional graphic design to create unique and dynamic pieces that captivate the viewer’s imagination. \n  \nStephanie “Sesame” Campbell went to Bard College on an art scholarship in the nineties based on the strength of her work as a homeless NYC street and graffiti artist. When shamed by a professor’s disdain for her lack of classical training\, she put down her brush and pivoted to more academic pursuits. Stephanie eventually earned multiple graduate degrees in philosophy\, education\, and public health policy. She now works as a national drug policy advisor and consultant for government\, health care providers\, and nonprofit organizations\, informed by her lived experience as a person in sustained recovery. Several years ago\, she began her artistic recovery\, committing to an art practice after 25 years away from the canvas. \n  \nAfter a series of master studies that built confidence and skill\, she embarked on a journey exploring light and color with her application of thousands of tiny dots. Through her evocative works\, she has found her voice in creating captivating landscapes and symbolic representations\, impressively demonstrating the power of self-taught art. \n  \nDottie’s Coffee Lounge/Dorothy’s Estaminet\, 438/444 North Street\, will host “Polly\, Elano\, and Richard\, Icons of The Present Day: Jazz\, Pittsfield\, and Manhattan” at the Dot Gallery through September featuring artists Polly Kurasch\, Elano Dallmeyer\, and Richard Britell. There will be a reception with the artists on Friday\, September 6\, from 5 to 7 pm. \n  \nPolly Kurasch says of her works “These began as sketches done at live jazz sessions in Pittsfield\, Lenox\, and Newport\, and later enlarged with the addition of collage and paint elements.” \n  \nElano Dallmeyer says of his photographs “This series explores an intimate tour of the now defunct Berkshire Mall. A former place of anxious congregation for the youth of the Berkshires.” \n  \nRichard Britell says of his paintings “I paint images that seek to document the realities of the hundred-year-old architectural surfaces in New York City\, especially downtown Manhattan.” \n  \nDottie’s Coffee Lounge/Dorothy’s Estaminet\, 438/444 North Street\, will host a First Fridays After Party featuring DJ BFG on Friday\, September 6\, from 7 to 10 pm. Doors open at 6 pm. \n  \nDJ BFG\, aka Gabby Squailia\, has been spinning for dance floors in the Berkshires for twenty years. She is known for seamless mixes\, musical versatility\, and crowd-reading acumen. She is also the author of the novels Dead Boys and Viscera. \n  \nThere will be a full cash bar and coffee available for purchase at both events. \n  \nHotel on North\, 297 North Street\, will feature landscape paintings by Marita Glodt through September 30. The show will be on view to the public on Friday\, September 6\, from 5 to 8 pm. \n  \n“When I paint the Berkshire landscape\, I am often overcome by its beauty\, power and majesty\,” says Marita. “Every time I venture into the field to draw or paint\, I am hopeful that the Berkshires are seen with new eyes – mine and yours…. I create art to spark joy\, conversation and community and to inspire our shared responsibility to preserve our cherished landscape.” \n  \nThe Tartell Gallery at Methuselah Bar and Lounge\, 391 North Street\, will feature “Nouvelle Chicane: new paintings by Edward Pelkey”. The show will be on view on Friday\, September 6\, and when Methuselah is open. \n  \nThe Berkshire Black Economic Council\, 33 Dunham Mall\, Suite 101\, will feature “The Creative Journey” by DeSean Scales for the September First Fridays Artswalk. There will be a reception with the artist on Friday\, September 6 from 5 to 8 pm. \n  \nDeSean Scales is a self-taught photographer based in Pittsfield. In every frame\, DeSean aims to capture not just an image\, but a connection—a shared moment of joy\, reflection\, or understanding. Whether photographing people\, landscapes\, or objects\, photography is DeSean’s way of bringing light into the world\, one frame at a time. \n  \nFor the month of September\, Marie’s North Street Eatery and Gallery\, 146 North Street\, will feature a multi-media piece entitled TEMPEST containing the exhibit “Hidden By the Weight of Our Scales”. Hidden By the Weight of Our Scales attempts to provide moments to explore the subtlety of the human emotional landscape through illustrations by Antoine Adams. The exhibit will be on view on Friday\, September 6 during the First Fridays Artswalk. \n  \nDowntown Pittsfield\, Inc. and First Fridays Artswalk will host a Free Kids’ Paint & Sip on Friday\, September 6\, 5 to 7:45 pm\, as part of the First Fridays at Five Family Fun Zone on Dunham Mall (100 North Street). \n  \nThis free Paint & Sip is best suited for ages 5 to 12\, although younger and older children are welcome. The Amy Ryan Band will play from 5 to 6 pm\, followed by Misty Blues from 6 to 8 pm. \n  \nMisty Blues pays homage to the older blues made popular by the bold and brassy women of its time\, while still paying respect to classic male artists of the 20’s\, 30’s and 40’s. There will be an opening reception with the artist on Friday\, December 1\, 5 to 8 pm\, during the First Fridays Artswalk. \n  \nFor her show\, Go Big Where Expanding\, Kara delves into a question that she has been exploring for some time. The inspiration stems from the colloquial idiom\, “Go big or go home!” While the saying may inspire or trigger a number of reactions\, it is a trite phrase that led to a profoundly deep question… Where in life do we want to give our all? Ultimately\, “going big” transcends mere scale; it embodies a personal choice for wholehearted dedication. From her own quest\, Kara determined\, “Hope is a state of mind. Love is a state of being. Passion is a state of action. And for me\, going all in on all three of these can create a beautiful life.” \n  \nKara has expanded her contemplation into a community-driven exploration\, encouraging viewers to reflect on where they want to focus their energy or make meaningful impact in their lives. Some paintings in this show were inspired by anonymous submissions collected from the people of Berkshire County\, MA during her previous “Go Big Where” show in 2022. \n  \nThe Marketplace Cafe\, 53 North Street\, will present Nature Photography by Susan Lynch Smith for the month of December. There will be an opening reception with the artist during the December 1 First Fridays Artswalk from 5 to 7 pm. \n  \nPhotographer Susan Lynch Smith captures dramatic\, fleeting moments in nature – always searching for a point in time that catches the breath and steals the heart. Susan’s work will remain on display through the end of December. \n  \nThe Unitarian Universalist Church of Pittsfield\, 175 Wendell Avenue\, will present an experiment with canine artists: Can Dogs Paint? December 1- 24. There will be an opening reception and silent auction on Friday\, December 1\, 5 to 7 pm\, as part of the First Fridays Artswalk. \n  \nInspired by a notable rescue dog in Connecticut\, “Rembrandt” who has become known for his ability to create abstract art\, the Unitarian Universalist Church has gathered a group of local pooches to see if they\, too\, could create unique and interesting paintings. This experiment is intended as a fun way to bring dogs and their owners together\, and to play with a new way of looking at color and form. The pups’ paintings will be offered for sale via a Silent Auction to benefit the Unitarian Universalist Church. \n  \nTKG Real Estate\, 137 North Street\, will present “Landscape: Real and Imagined” by David Dew Bruner for the month of December. There will be an opening reception with the artist on Friday\, December 1\, 4 to 6 pm. \n  \n“As an artist and landscape architect I look at the world around me and synthesize it\,” says Bruner. “My goal is to interpret\, define and reimagine the environment. In this selection of art\, I have chosen from several series to emphasize the range of imagery. They all attempt to give the viewer a new perspective on the subject.” \n  \nThe Beacon Cinema Lobby\, at 57 North Street\, will present a show by the Clock Tower Artists curated by the visionary artist Dr. Mark Mellinger. This exhibition promises to be an extraordinary journey through diverse artistic expressions\, inviting you to explore the intricate tapestry of the human spirit. Mark Mellinger seamlessly weaves a lifetime of experience\, practicing art for six decades and psychoanalysis for four\, into a compelling exploration of the unspoken\, the ineffable\, and the sensual world of materials through his paintings\, collages\, and intricate wood and iron constructions. \n  \nFeatured artists in this exhibition are Deborah H. Carter\, Marion H. Grant\, Caroline Kelley\, Bruce Laird\, Mark Mellinger\, Linda Petrocine\, Sally Tiska Rice\, and Audrey Shachnow. \n  \nDownload the Downtown Pittsfield app in the App Store or on Google Play to follow a virtual walking tour of art on your cell phone. \n  \nFirst Fridays Artswalk is supported in part by a grant from the Mass Cultural Council\, and a grant from the Pittsfield Cultural Council\, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency. \n  \nThis program is also supported in part by The Feigenbaum Foundation as well as a grant awarded by Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation’s Arts Build Community initiative with funding from the Barr Foundation. \n  \nFor more information on First Fridays Artswalk\, visit www.firstfridaysartswalk.com or call Downtown Pittsfield\, Inc. at 413-443-6501. \n  \nEvent Highlights (South to North): \n  \nUnitarian Universalist Church of Pittsfield\, 175 Wendell Avenue \nAn experiment with canine artists: Can Dogs Paint? \nOpening Reception: Friday\, December 1\, 5 to 7 pm \n  \nArtists at the Clock Tower\, 75 South Church Street\, Third Floor \nDeborah H. I feel that our souls\, our beginnings and our endings\, lie low in our bodies as the soil that helps sustain us lies low on the earth. \n  \nThese paintings are a representation of what I see when I look directly down at soil. The paintings are multi-layered\, complex and earthy in tones. I want to capture the movement\, depth and complexity of soil in these paintings. I am lucky enough to know two extraordinarily beautiful farms that serve as the inspiration for these Soil Paintings: Spring Hills Farm in Dalton\, PA and Woven Roots Farm in Tyringham\, MA. Both are working organic farms that place high importance on the health and beauty of soil. “ \n  \nDownload the Downtown Pittsfield app in the App Store or on Google Play to follow a virtual walking tour of art on your cell phone. \n  \nEvent Highlights (South to North): \n  \nUnitarian Universalist Church of Pittsfield\, 175 Wendell Avenue \n“Darling\, Darling” by Falcon Laina and Cassidy Clark \nReception: Friday\, November 3\, 5 to 7 pm \n  \nArtists at the Clock Tower\, 75 South Church Street\, Third Floor \nDeborah H. “ \n  \nThe Berkshire Art Center (BAC)\, 141 North Street\, will continue to offer Free Artmaking Drop-Ins on the First Friday of the month from 5:30 to 7:30 pm\, year-round.
