While our traditional view of creative work might lead us to think of artists as solitary visionaries\, the creative process is profoundly influenced by social interactions even when artists work alone. Sociologist Hannah Wohl draws on more than one hundred interviews and two years of ethnographic research in the New York contemporary art market to develop a rich sociological perspective of creativity. From inside the studio\, we see how artists experiment with new ideas and decide which works to abandon\, destroy\, put into storage\, or exhibit. Wohl then transports readers into the art world\, where we discover how artists’ understandings of their work are shaped through interactions in studio visits\, galleries\, international art fairs\, and collectors’ homes.\n \n  \nBound by Creativity reveals how artists develop conceptions of their distinctive creative visions through experimentation and social interactions. Ultimately\, we come to appreciate how judgment is integral to the creative process\, both resulting in the creation of original works while also limiting an artist’s ability to break new ground. Exploring creativity through the lens of judgment sheds new light on the production of cultural objects\, markets\, and prestige.  \n  \nHannah Wohl is a native of the Berkshires and an assistant professor of sociology at the University of California\, Santa Barbara. She received her PhD in sociology at Northwestern University and was a postdoctoral fellow at Columbia University. DESCRIPTION:The OLLI Distinguished Speakers Series presents\nWilliams College Professor Jana Sawicki on \nWhat is Happiness? \nTuesday\, February 22\, 7 pm \nOnline via Zoom  \nClick here to register safely and securely online or call 413.236.2190. \n  \nSince the time of Plato and Aristotle\, philosophers have discussed happiness: What is it? Is it primarily a pleasurable feeling? A psychological state of mind? A sense of well-being? In what sense can we describe a life as happy\, and what makes a life happy as such? What makes someone worthy of happiness? What can science tell us about happiness? Can happiness by measured? Is the value of happiness over-rated? What role does adversity play in a happy life? \nAlthough this lecture will not be able to engage all of these questions\, we will discuss some of the key debates in the philosophical literature with the aim of laying the groundwork for an interesting discussion and sharing our collective wisdom about the value of happiness. \nJana Sawicki is the Morris Professor of Rhetoric (in Philosophy) at Williams College\, and has been teaching at Williams for 30 years. Working closely with students\, she has had the opportunity to read and think together with them about questions of central concern: the challenges they face\, the experiences that they find meaningful\, their preoccupations and values\, their considerable capacity and potential role as future leaders. Many of their questions continue to be at the center of her own research and writing: Who are we today? How has the rise of the digital age and recent trends in globalization changed our ways of life and self-understandings in the contemporary US? What are some of the most significant problems facing us in the present\, and what can philosophy contribute to addressing them? How do we reconcile democratic liberalism with multiculturalism? How should we think about racial and political polarization and the threats posed to democracy? Professor Sawicki’s areas of expertise include published work on the widely influential French thinker Michel Foucault and receptions and uses of his work in feminist and queer theories\, as well as 19th and 20th century Continental philosophy\, particularly ethics and politics.  \nAdmission is $10 for OLLI at BCC and Berkshire Museum members\, and $15 for the general public. DuBois\, James Van Der Zee\, and Elizabeth Freeman\, the first enslaved African American woman to successfully file a lawsuit for freedom in the state of Massachusetts. Her 1780 case set a precedent that led to the abolition of slavery in Massachusetts a few years later. MCLA Professor Emerita Frances Jones-Sneed will tell Freeman’s story\, its implications\, and current efforts to share it widely\, from a planned motion picture to a commemorative statue in Sheffield\, joining one on view at the National Museum of African-American History and Culture in Washington DC. \nDr. Frances Jones-Sneed is professor emerita of history and former Director of Women Studies at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. Jones-Sneed has taught and researched local history\, with a focus on African-Americans\, for over twenty-five years. She spearheaded a national conference on African American biography in September 2006\, is co-director of the Upper Housatonic Valley African American Heritage Trail\, a former board member of Mass Humanities\, and is presently a board member of the Samuel Harrison Society and Clinton Church Restoration. She was a 2008 NEH Summer Fellow at the W. E. B. DESCRIPTION:The OLLI Distinguished Speakers Series presents\nWilliams College Professor Michelle Apotsos on \nArchitecture\, Environmentalism & Islam: The Djenne Mosque \nTuesday\, December 14\, 7 pm\nOnline via Zoom  \nAs one of the tallest freestanding earthen structures in the world\, the legendary Djenne Mosque\, located in Mali\, West Africa\, has long functioned as a symbol of cultural identity in the area of the Niger Bend\, as well as a touchstone of the primary regional religion\, Islam. \nYet the current climate crisis and resultant discussions about the importance of sustainable systems and green solutions – particularly with regards to architecture – compels a reconsideration of this mosque through a new lens: that of environmentalism and sustainability. Thus\, this talk explores how ancient architectures such as the Djenne mosque\, which has existed in one iteration or another for over 700 hundred years\, may have lessons to teach us about contemporary and even future-facing sustainable architectural solutions. \nIn rethinking the Djenne mosque through the lenses of both faith and environmentalism\, one sees how Islam and sustainable architecture exist within the mosque as a collaborative system\, providing potential lessons for humanity to consider as we plan for an increasingly uncertain future. \nMichelle Apotsos is an Associate Professor of Art History at Williams College\, where she teaches courses about Africa\, Islam\, and the built environment. She  is the author of Architecture\, Islam\, and Identity in West Africa: Lessons from Larabanga (Routledge\, 2016) and The Masjid in Contemporary Islamic Africa (Cambridge University Press\, 2021). With more than 41 million Americans over the age of 65 in the United States\, the question becomes how much (or\, perhaps\, what type) of memory loss is to be expected as one gets older and what should trigger a visit to the doctor. Join Dr. Andrew Budson for this virtual Zoom talk where he will discuss his award-winning book\, Seven Steps to Managing Your Memory: What’s Normal\, What’s Not\, and What to Do About It\, which explains how individuals can distinguish changes in memory due to Alzheimer’s versus normal aging\, what medications\, diets\, and exercise regimes can help\, and the best habits\, strategies\, and memory aids to use\, in seven simple steps. At the same time\, it must be understood that electrification is the biggest transition the automotive industry has ever had to face. There are major challenges along the entire value chain that need to be resolved in order to reach this goal. One important example is the complementary role of battery electric and fuel cell electric technologies. \nTo explain and clarify these issues\, we have two speakers from Toyota\, a company that has been addressing environmental issues for over 30 years. Dr. Stephan Herbst\, currently acting as the Technical Head Powertrain Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Business Unit of Toyota Motor Europe’s (TME) R&D and Fuel Cell Business Group\, is responsible for hydrogen strategy\, new products and sustainable mobility. He is on the Management Board of the Hydrogen Council and actively involved in Hydrogen Europe. Ash Corson is the Senior Manager for the Electrified Vehicle & Technologies Office (EVTO) of Toyota Motor North America. Working within Toyota’s Corporate Strategy & Planning group\, Ash’s primary responsibilities for EVTO include North American electrified mobility progression\, fuel cell electric powertrain deployment\, and hydrogen infrastructure enablement. Online via Zoom. \n  \nHumor in the time of Covid? Perhaps now more than ever\, humor and laughter are needed to cope with the unexpected\, the vicissitudes of life\, and difficult times. The presentation will discuss humor styles and personality traits\, integrate insights from areas such as psychology\, sociology\, and cultural anthropology to not only point to humor as a coping strategy\, but to also illustrate the many other ways in which humor and laughter impact mental and physical well-being. \n  \nRita Nnodim\, Ph.D. graduated from Johannes-Gutenberg University\, Mainz (Germany) with a Masters in African Languages and Literatures. She holds a PhD in West African Studies from the University of Birmingham\, UK. She is an Associate Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts\, where she teaches courses such as Introduction to Cross-cultural and Social Justice Studies\, Global Refugees of the 21st Century\, Madness & Society\, as well as her new class on Humor\, Laughter\, and Comedy. DESCRIPTION:The OLLI Distinguished Speakers Series presents \nAmherst College Professor \nFranklin Odo on \nJapanese Americans in World War II \nWednesday\, August 4\, 5:30 pm \nOnline via Zoom \n\nClick here to register safely and securely online\,\nor call 413.236.2190 (M-F 9am-4pm) to register by phone with a credit card. \n\nThree months after Pearl Harbor was bombed and the U.S. entered WWII\, the nation began incarcerating 120\,000 Americans of Japanese descent\, some of whom were not released until early 1946. This was justified on the basis of national security\, but in 1988 President Ronald Reagan apologized on behalf of the nation and George H.W. Bush issued reparations checks of $20\,000 to all survivors. \nDuring World War Two Japanese Americans seeking to demonstrate patriotism served in the military\, earning numerous combat honors; others went to prison protesting the draft when their families were still behind barbed wire. The Supreme Court upheld these convictions but the cases were vacated in 1983. This episode in American history is one example of our nation’s ongoing and complex history of reconciling national security needs with commitment to the rights of individuals and groups.  \n\nProfessor Franklin Odo is a Japanese American historian\, activist\, and teacher. He received his B.A. in History from Princeton University\, his M.A. in East Asia Regional Studies from Harvard\, and his Ph.D. with a dissertation on Japanese feudalism from Princeton. He was an early leader of Asian American Studies and other Ethnic Studies in the late 1960s. He has taught at numerous institutions including Occidental College\, UCLA\, Cal State Long Beach\, University of Pennsylvania\, University of Maryland College Park\, Hunter College\, Princeton University\, and Columbia University. Odo was director of Ethnic Studies at the University of Hawaii\, and from 1989-1991\, he served as President of the Association for Asian American Studies. He has published extensively. In 1997\, Odo became the founding Director of the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Program\, where he brought and created numerous exhibits featuring Asian Americans. He is currently the Simpson Lecturer at Amherst College. \n\n\n Admission is $10 for OLLI at BCC\, Massachusetts Village and Berkshire Museum members\, and $15 for the general public. That was the question facing John F. Kennedy at the height of the Cold War— a moment when the Soviet Union built the wall in Berlin\, tested nuclear bombs more destructive than any in history\, and beat the US to every major milestone in space. The race to the heavens seemed a race for survival— and America was losing. When John Glenn blasted into orbit on February 20\, 1962\, his mission was greater than circling Earth; it was to calm the fears of the free world and renew America’s sense of self- belief. Mercury Rising re- creates the sense of tension to a flight that riveted the world. DESCRIPTION:The OLLI Distinguished Speakers Series presents\nProfessor David Baum on \nWhat is Living and What is Dead in Fascism?\nThe 20th Century’s Most Troubling and Enduring Idea at 100  \nThursday\, June 10\, 2021 at 7:00 pm Eastern \nOnline via Zoom \nClick here to register safely and securely online\nor call 413.236.2190 (M-F 9am-4pm) to register by phone with a credit card. \nWhen Bard College at Simon’s Rock Professor David Baum first began to be interested in the Fascist period in Italy a little over 20 years ago\, Fascism seemed a dead letter\, the very stuff of disinterested scholarship. Since then\, of course\, it’s experienced quite the revival. The 2016 election triggered the publication of at least four noteworthy books on fascism intended for broad audiences and at the same time conjured a movement – Antifa\, short for anti-fascism – that very much held that its nemesis was back. The term “fascist\,” for the longest time merely a generic term of opprobrium\, elbowed its way back into the political lexicon. \nIn retrospect\, the assumption that Fascism was an extinct political species now appears wildly naïve. Current attempts to understand the populist right and hyper nationalists\, here and around the globe\, tend to focus on two causes: one sees rightwing populism as a kind of false consciousness\, a misguided reaction to the economic upheaval of the 21st century; the other\, the playing out of an imbedded racism in American life responding to the perceived threat of demographic change to white privilege. Both explanations have merit\, but ultimately\, we need to return to the origins of Fascism in the post-Great War period to better understand both the forces that initially called forth the movement and the prejudices of the dominant ideological discourses – liberal and socialist/communist – that weakened the West’s response to Fascism’s rise. \nDavid Baum received his PhD in European History from Yale University and has taught at New York University\, Skidmore College\, Union College\, the American University in Iraq-Sulaimani\, West Texas A&M University and is currently at Bard College at Simon’s Rock in Great Barrington. He is also the head of school at the John Dewey Academy\, also in Great Barrington. His research and teaching have focused on the Italian Renaissance\, Italian Fascism\, and the Modern Middle East. His current research project is on views of the Renaissance during the inter-war period in Italy\, entitled\, Fascism and the Italian Renaissance. \nAdmission is $10 for OLLI at BCC and Berkshire Museum members\, and $15 for the general public.
